for the WWII buffs!

hey guys, how would you like to fly some of the WWII birds your assembling and drooling over? ive had the PC game Combat Flight Simulator 3 for about 8 months now and i still thouroughly enjoy playing it. the graphics and realism are top notch. you can fly air combat or ground attack or play online. just thought i would drop that in. a very cool way to semi-experience WWII from the cockpit.

Yep,

Had 2 versions of CFS for the last 3 years, GREAT fun and realistic graphics and sound!

Sometimes I'll go to the training field, and pretend I'm doing an airshow, like Bob Hoover, in the P-51D! Cool [8D]

save up and buy a new computer shrikes, it will be worth it. the only problem i find is having time for both passions. assembling the model, or fly the blame thing on my computer. i love WWII. for realism, my favorite is to fly the P-51D ofcourse, but if i just wont to kick some major booty in the sky, i fly the spitfire. for ground attack, a choose the typhoon with the four 20mm cannon and wreak major havoc on the airfields. so much fun can be had. i wish i could talk my crew chief into mounting one (or two for that matter) of those 20mm cannons of the P-51D. that would be really excellent. enough with the dreaming, i gotta go clean the kitchen fellows, my wife is a slave driver!

I'm having a hard enough time buying an airbrush! I don't think a new computer is anywhere in my immediate future. Actually, i have been able to upgrade my PC to try and "keep up" with the new games... the only components on my rig that are from the original machine are the processor, motherboard and floppy disk drive! everything down to the peripherals and power source have been swapped out! Smile [:)]

I saw you can fly twing engined stuff, right? I prefer ground attack, so i'd pick a Mitchell or Marauder. No A-26 invaders yet, right?

fraid not skrikes, but they do have varied versions of the ju-88, b-25, b-26, and the misquito bomber. im hoping they'll come out with vietnam version of cfs. i would love to dogfight in an f-4 phantom! anywho, are you stationed in the philippines in the military, or are you a permanent resident? and how much did you say an airbrush on the island cost? i dont know if dixieart would ship overseas for free. i kinda doubt it.

Whaaaaaat?! you actualy got it to run properly?C.F.S.(chronic fatigue syndrom)3 was nothing but frustration for me.After numerous tweaks to my system it was still a dog!After a comparison of the CFS3 fw-190 cockpit vs Il-2 sturmovic(original)fw 190 cockpit,I pulled CFS 3 outta there.I'm currently into Il2 Forgotten Battles.Il-2 F.B. flat out rocks!Give it go,you'll love it!

I upgraded my Pentium II as well with only the floppy drive being original, but alas, I believe my computer has reached its limit with CFS 2. A great game though...so hopefully this year I can save up for a brand new one...

combat flight sim 2 has the pacific theater. part 3 is in the european theater. ive been tempted to buy cfs 2 just to dogfight flying a corsair. my favorite WWII bird is the P-51D, but my second choice is the corsair. i attended the blue angels homecoming show back in november of 03' and a retired naval officer owned a corsair. it was a show in itself. i sat and drooled while i watched the graceful bird soar through the crystal clear skies over pensacola. the commentator announced that the navy was selling corsairs after WWII. you could buy a dozen corsairs for $10,000. they sell for $850,000 today. amazing little nugget. im still searching for a place to find a P-51D in real life. theres a place near orlando, florida that claims to do a P-51 airshow. im currently trying to get the dates.

I agree. I love the P-51 and I tried a few several simulators years ago but I could never get the visibility/situational awareness necessary to fight effectively. I had to press too many keys to look left or right, couldn't look behind and by that time I was full of holes and going down in flames. I'm sure it's a great game but for me, flying a real aircraft beats any simulator I've ever seen. Unfortunately, a Cessna 150 is probably as close to a P-51 as I'll ever get.

you guys are right, but who can actually go back to 1944 and fly against a bf-109 or fw-190? its just another fantacy thing that goes along with my modelling enjoyment. i would never even compare my simulator to a real combat experience. for one, the g's are not there. i have all my "look" views assigned to my joystick and you just get use to it. after logging about 100 hrs in the sim. these things become 2nd nature as does most mundane things like turning your radio up or down or driving while your eating. lighten up and live fellows! later

I get the same thing with my other games... i can't remember where the retract flaps is on any given sim when asked, but when i play the darned thing it just comes. I'm still playing WWII Fighters because that's all my PC can handle! Well, that and Microprose's B-17 Flyingfortress (the first one) Smile [:)]

I don't think i'd like to own a fighter... Maybe an A-26 so if I feel like it, I can hop in and go to Hong kong with my friends.... Sigh [sigh]

if only i had enough time/money!

Anyone ever try the online multiplayer WW2 game Fighter Ace? Lotsa fun flying with and fighting against real human beings. Loads of planes to fly too! How about 3 different Corsair versions, Tempests,Typhoons, Yak 3s, LA7s, about every 109 varient, at least 5 FW190 varients just to name a few. Bomb ships (or go in low and drop a fish if you like), strafe tanks or trains, drop paratroops, dodge ack. It's all there. It costs $15/month to play but if you like action this is the game.

I built a series of 1% aircraft (within 1% of the actual flight characteristics) and a series of new aircraft and skins for the original CFS, which is still a nice game (and dirt cheap) if you don't have the horsepower to run IL-2 or CFS3.

Funny thing is, my new aircraft in CFS1 were as detailed as CFS2...the site is still up if anyone still flies CFS1. www.njahof.org/jager/

Note that these planes won't work in CFS2 or CFS3...

I used to buy nearly every cool sim that came out and play them to death. Once I started flying for real (PA28, now T-34C), I can't really get into them. The lack of physical sensations, horrendously decreased SA and visual perception, and the fact that most of them have way too many functions and thus have you searching for keys for things that in the real craft you have memorized combine to make them not nearly as fun as they used to be. Case in point - I can barely fly a pattern in something like MSFS, but can do it in my sleep in the T-34.

Nothing can replace strapping an airplane on. The decreased SA and vision alone bug me too much now.

I've thought about upgrading (1947 L-17B Navion) but not until the restrictions are lifted.

I wouldn't know, I'm don't fly them in the civilian world. Check the T-34 Association webpage. They should have all the info you need about the ADs.

I have both CFS3 and Il-2 Sturmovik. I find there is good and bad points to both games. It's a great way to ease back after a crappy day at work. There's nothing like a little dogfight with a dozen F.W.-190's to relax a man.

It is relaxing,ain't it!For me,it's ground attack after work.After nailing a train followed by a few barrage ballons on the way back to base,I feel much better.

While in the Corps, I was able to get in about 30 hrs of backseat time on TA-4s. Got in some 1vs1 ACM's and afterwards the pilot's always gave me the stick to let loose and have some fun, was a blast! Thought every enlistedman should have at least one ride in a jet fighter/trainer before getting out. The CFS-3 runs abit slow on the computer but the first 2 CFS works fine and, when I want some Jet action, I switch to Falcon 4.0 Looking at picking up the IL-2 game one of these days. Have a 3 yr old granddaughter who loves flying these simulators, who knows I might have a future fighter pilot in the family?

I've played flight sims for years, online and offline. I love love love acm, it's like the ultimate chess game. All the more humbling when you consider that some people did it in real life. I dont' have the computer to run CFS 3 but I have both 1 and 2 and played them for hours and hours. If you want a real thrill, play online against real people, much more intense than against computer ai.

I think the best flight sim to date has been European Air War by Microprose. Excellent online combat and the flight modeling of the different aircraft was very true to life. I think you still can find this sim at computer stores for about $9.99. Original price was around $50.00. Pentium 2 should handle it. Second best ever was Janes WWII Fighters. Used to play it online but Janes got rid of their game room and I have not been able to find another server running it. Both supported voice communications which took online flying to the next level.

I just might get a new computer by the weekend!! My old PII has been giving me problems for the last 2 days (had to take it to the shop because the damn thing wouldn't start properly). While i was there the technician said that he can put a new rig together for me for a little less than $400 if we just carry over most of the major parts into the new machine! I don't need to purcahse most of the peripherals since i have them already (i.e. monitor, printer, scanner, mouse, speakers, etc...), which means that i only need to buy a CPU... and even then he can cut corners! All I need is a processor, a motherboard, some memory and i have a new machine!
Plus, i forwarded the idea to my dad, and he loves that it's that cheap... so he's going to pay for it! Finally! Big Smile [:D]

hey mattp, i think the question concerned flight sims. you know, flight SIMS! we're just having fun on our computers. we all know it isn't anywhere compared to the real thing. personally, i'm on a budget. i'd LIKE to fly a t-34, but i can only afford to play with little ones. thanks for sharing though. that may even have been your intention, but it read more like rubbing noses in something.
