Phantom Help
Posted by sgtcat09 on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 7:13 PM

Hello, i have a 1/48 scale phantom kit to build and was planning to do it up like the QF-4B, specifically number 8365. I figured most of it out, the one thing i was iffy on was the underside. Some of the drones had white center tanks, others did not, and i also couldn't find a good shot of the underside for any of them, if someone had some pics or info on this plane specifically, that'd be great. Thanks.

148365 was the QF-4B development plane, so may have differed slightly from "production" models, all the pictures that I have seen of 148365 show an orange centerline tank & orange undersides. Later QF-4B's generally seem to carry white tanks.

Wings Palette have a decent side view of 148365;

It seems that 148365 also wore two different tail markings, the NMC one as shown in these pictures & also a PMTC badge. I think the NMC badge was worn first & then replaced by the PTMC one;

I miss hearing them on short final to Bergstrom AFB... When the wind was right, they flew right over the house on final approach.... Plus, one of 'em was Dad's, ocasionally, until 1972..  He knew I'd be out there watching, so I'd get a "wing-waggle", lol..

three things that might help you decide which to build, based on the parts you might have to work with

the first jet has the earliest tail tip, the earliest IR nose fairing, and the unslotted stabs

the second jet has the second tail tip, the slotted stabs,,,and the second IR nose fairing (this one is similar to the first F-4D IR fairing)

also,,,,,these are both with the same unit,,,,,only the name changed
