The US Coast Guard operated the Douglas R5D from the early 1950's until the receipt of the C-130 in the early 1960's. The "Skymaster" was used as a long range transport and SAR aircraft in the Pacific by the Service.
In the Atlantic it was used as a SAR aircraft and as a "iceberg chaser" for the International Ice Patrol flying out of Argentia Newfoundland Naval air station during ice berg season. It's reliabilty and long range made it a favorite of the air crews.
The model is a Heller kit and scaled in 1:72. It's painted in the ice patrol scheme dated 1959. I was surprised on how big the aircraft was, the CG flew a variety of aircraft in the 1950's and this plane was probably the largest, I had forgotten it was designed as an airliner!
