A Model MiG I-270 finished
Posted by Borg R3-MC0 on Friday, February 3, 2012 3:17 AM

I am working on a 1/72 MiG- I-270 by A Model.

The MiG-270 can be seen as the ultimate development in the DFS-194, Me-163, Me-263 family. This whole Komet family is one of the collections/themes that I am building. I already have got a DFS-194, Me-163A, B and J8M1 build (and Me-163C, Me-163S and Me-263 in the stash).

The A Model kit a typical short run kit, general outline is ok, recessed panel lines. The fit is reasonable and the plastic has some strange texture at certain places but with some modelling skills this should all be overcome.

Here are some pics of the cockpit. The only thing I added are the seatbelts, these are made with flattened streched sprue.

To prevent tailsitting I added some nuts and bolts as weight. These where glued in using cyano and a baking soda/baby powder mix.

I had a small disaster, the canopy snapped in two when I was attaching it. I will try to glue it and then use that as a heat smash mold.

To bad about the canopy, but a new canopy will help make the kit look better!  Be sure to sand the canopy down the thickness of the plastic you will be using to make the new one, otherwise the "heat-smashed" one will be to large.

Thanks for the advice Bronto.

I fixed the two pieces of the canopy on a couple of pencils and sanded them smooth. Due to the breakage I am looking into the canopy in more detail. The framework the A Model suggested is fictional and does not look in any way like the real aircraft. During my research for the canopy I also came across several god pictures of both prototype 1 and 2. They have some visible differences (proppellor, airscoops etc) which A Model forget to mention in their instructions.
Looks like this breaking canopy can become a blessing in disguse...

I made a heath smash copy of the canopy, masked it and started painting.

Current situation:

Canopy is masked with scotch tape, and wet tissues.

Bsyamato: you are right, the canopy was not that good to begin with. I have another A Model kit in the stash (polikarpov I-17) and it looks even worse.

However, rest of the build is quite easy, the fit is ok (not good but workable). I have added some metal rods to add some strength to the butt joints in the wing. And very carefully test fitted, adjusted, the test fitted again before glueing the pieces together. As a result I have used fairly little putty on the kit.

Here are some pics of the finished MiG I-270:

The metal paint was Duplicolor from a spray can. Decals where all Amodel, no problems with those. Then a dull coat (also Duplicolor) and detail painting with Games Workshop paint. The metal effect was enhanced by polishing with grafite powder.
The arial wire is streched sprue.

All in all it was an easy and quick build, expect for the canopy breaking. I am quite happy with the end result but all cooments are welcome.

Great job Borg! Love these old X-planes and beautiful work on the natural metal finish. Toast
