B-25 Question
Posted by PritMar on Monday, March 12, 2012 11:32 AM

I went to the Titusville air show this weekend and they had 4 B-25s. Unfortunately, they were in a roped off area and I could not get real close. It did not look to me like they had wheel wells. Is this so? If not, did the wheels just fold up against the fuselage?

They have wheel wells. The doors are just closed while the wheel are down.

The doors open, the main wheels fold up inside the nacelles behind the engines, then the doors close over them.

Here are some closeup pictures. You can see the doors closed behind the wheel.

You mean gear doors?  They do, but the doors are closed when the gear is down (and up), except for a small door at each strut that remains open...

I think it's a North American Aviation thing... The wheel well covers on the P-51 are the same way, remaining closed when the gear is down (until the hydraulic pressure bleeds off enough to let them fall open. As soon as the engine starts, they zip back up again)..  In fact, both the Mustang and B-25 doors can get "out of sync" and close while the gear's retracting, but before the wheels get up in the wells... All the pilot can do keep cycling the gear until they "get right", and stay open until the gear is full-up..
