Hmmm, that's some really interesting stuff Steve-O... I was nowhere even close. Wow 35 horsepower, I'd be scared to go into the air in a bird with only 35 hp... kind of like flying a really good size riding mower.Big Smile [:D]

Alrighty...

We had nine replies with three being correct, although one was privvy to privileged information. Wink [;)]

The three correct replies were made by:

Lufbery
Filibert Kraxner
Butz

The answer?

Port Victoria PV7 Grain Kitten

Here's the un-altered image of N539:

The aircraft was constructed by Port Victoria at the Experimental Construction Depot on the Isle of Grain, with N539 being the sole example built. It was developed in response to a requirement for a small, lightweight fighter able to operate from various classes of ships as a Zeppelin-killer.

The PV7 had a wingspan of only 18 feet, and was powered by an ABC 35hp two-cylinder Gnat engine. It was tested by Major WG Moor in October 1917 but was found to be underpowered and had a ceiling of only 12,000 feet, much too low to engage Zeppelins, some of which routinely operated at altitudes nearly twice as high.

Needless to say, the aircraft was never produced and it was found that other types already in service were adequate for the purpose.

One other aircraft was built by Port Victoria in an attempt to satisfy the above requirements; the PV8 Eastchurch Kitten. Here's a shot of the sole PV8, N540:

I don't know much about this aircraft, but I believe that it was as dismal a failure in it's intended role as was the PV7.

Quagmyre has asked to host the next quiz, so I hand it over to him...

Well Blackwolf

After our conversation last night, I am now prepared to venture a guess. Smile [:)]
Just kidding, I wouldn't want to take classified info and send in a guess just too make myself look smarter. That would be wrong, wouldn't it. Wink [;)]

I'm glad you get something outta these little quizzes, that's really what they're for. And don't feel bad, I had never heard of this thing before I found the image. Found it quite by accident, too.

I can't wait to see what it ends up being, but I've exhausted my ability to deal with frustration with this one... I just couldn't find anything close. Oh well that's the fun of the quiz, now I get to learn about a plane that I didn't even know existed... as soon as I find out what it is.

Well this one has caused me to burn the midnight oil, whth the temp around 30C and the humidity at 90% what else can you do?
I dont think I'm right even for the second time.
Please don't make them too easy though. It starts the grey matter and at my age it's use it or loose it.

Hi all,

Whoever built the model pictured in the first post really blew it. Obviously the figure is 1/48 scale, but the plane is 1/72 scale.

On the otherhand, I really like the whole hangar diorama. The Sopwiths in the background are a nice touch. Wink [;)]Big Smile [:D]

Well it's mid-week, so here's your clue...

Only one was made.

Also, the jokes about this kite being small are loosely relevant as regards it's name.

3/4th replica?!?

By george, I've got it! It's a biplane from the Munchkinland Airforce! Unfortunately, the whole airforce was lost due to a freak tornado/house accident that also killed the wicked witch of the east.

Geez, your quizzes are getting tougher and tougher!!

Or is he a giant?

Either way haven't got a clue, it's got far too many wings!
