Greg, Joe, thanks you.

Greg, ye, I was surprised at how quick it was, I was just hoping to get it done by the end of the month so I can complete all my GB commitments for this year. Give 72nd a try, you may surprise yourself. Some kits are pretty nicely detailed if you find the right ones

Spruce, now that's a neat scheme. After my last post, I actually had to check as I wasn't sure when the 17Z entered service.

The Stuka GB runs until the end of the year, and depending on how its going, I may well extend it to April at most, so plenty of time to join in if you can, would love to have you there.

That's extra sweet, Bish. I hadn't seen what you did to the cockpit until now. Excellent!!! ....as is the entire model.

One of these days I shall have to try a 1/72nd just to get a feel for what you braille scale gurus are up against.

And one last comment, 20 days from start to finish? Zowie!

Airfix are bringing out a new tool 17Z, to late for this scheme, but you never know, they might just do a new tool earlier 17. Looking at that box, I am sure I built that in the early days. There is one on E-bay on your side of the pond, but it seems a bit pricey.

www.ebay.com/.../400325525455

But an found an old E-bay auction for one that was sold in the UK a couple of months back for £8. So I am sure you will be able to find one somewhere, maybe if you can find the newer boxing it won't be so costly.

I am just hoping the Trump A is more accurate than their B kit.

A colorful Do-17Z in unusual colors is actually possible.
My Monogram Painting Guide to German Aircraft 1935 to 1945 shows a nice photo of a Dornier Do 215 V1 9 ( Do 17Z )  in export colors:
color swatches are given for :
67 Dark Olive Green
68 Light Olive Green
64 Light Blue.
69 Light Tan
which I have listed in dark to light order.
I have not yet had time to check for FS or RAL equivalent colors.
As for old kit prices, they vary considerably at shows but can usually be purchased for less than the E-Bay prices.
I passed up AIRFIX 1/24 Spitfire Mk I and FW 190 kits at last week's show as I had hit my spending limit.
Asking prices were $20 each for early 1980s vintage kits but were still on the table when I left three hours before the show closed.
I presume either someone bought them for less during the final hour or I may yet see them in Autumn provided a show is hosted by this IPMS chapter:
I did locate a 1/72 Airfix Ju 87B kit  for $10.99 at a Chicago hobby shop yesterday:
An Italieri kit was also available for $5 more but the package was dated 1997 vs. the new Airfix  red box release with decals in better condition.
The Airfix decals are far better than I am used to seeing in their releases.
I hope to join your Ju 87 build before it closes, but am still occupied with more urgent matters.

Those RS kits are quite a bit more expensive, but they do look nice. I have not built any of there kits yet though. I have a P in wartime scheme, but they have a selection of 17's, 8 that I know of. One is in these scheme but with the 4 digit code. They also do an E with this scheme as 2 options.

Thanks, Bish,  for the info on the SH versions and the upcoming Trumpeter kit in 1/32.

I was thinking of looking for the old Airfix E/F versions

http://modelingmadness.com/scott/axis/luft/do17preview.htm

at a future swap meet but finding a particular kit-if they exist-  for the right price at one of those shows tends to be determined largely by chance.

I did see a dozen or so 1/72 Ju 87 D/G kits by Revell and Fujimi. for $4 each...........good price but I wanted a B version and my cash went elsewhere.

Mentioning the RS brand reminded me that one of the few remaining Northern Illinois hobby shops had an RS kit in stock a few months ago.

Price is a bit higher than I am used to paying but that kit seems to be the only version available for the moment. I'll see how finances go; I may yet pick up one.

Thanks guys.

Spruce, I already have one of the RS Do 17's, but I am now really thinking of getting another in this scheme. That large surface area looks rather nice in those colours.

If you want to get one of SH's Stuka's, they do 3, basically the same kit in different markings. There is this one, one with Japanese markings, which I don't think has this scheme and the Condor legion one which does have this. I am now thinking of getting the 32nd Trump A kit when it come out, just as an excuse to do this scheme in a larger scale.

Really nice work , as always ! Toast

I definitely need to obtain one of those kits and that colour scheme is tempting me to build an early Do 17 .......

I got the A-2 finished last night and just taken the pics. The last stage was a very light weathering using Flory washes and some Flory grime around the wheel spats and rear undercarriage. Final touches were E-Z line for the antenna wires and a cranking handle to start the engine made from some plastic rod.

The kit does not come with any bombs and I not to add one and I also left out the rear MG. As its a peace time aircraft, I decided to take the opportunity not to have it all bombed up.

I have been really pleased with this build. I was surprised at how easy it went together. Before now I had not given much thought to pre war aircraft,  but this scheme especially has really got my attention so I can see me doing a few more 1930's German builds. And a real joy to add my second Stuka to the built pile

That would be nice, but from what I can tell, this is a bomber scheme, the predecessor of the 70/71 scheme. I have been looking at Do 17's and He 111's in this scheme.

I have also been looking at the Avis early bf 109's, I think one of those would make a nice companion to this. I also have a Condor legion 87A, might be nice to do a 109 with that as well.

Seeing how good that scheme looks, I can certainly understand wanting to do more pre-war aircraft with it.    Bf-109A??   We rarely see them built up 'round these parts.

This looks really good, Bish.   That color palette looks so much more interesting than the war-time colors.

Ok, time for another update. I got the markings on followed by exhaust staining using Tamiya XF-19 and then a flat coat. As you can see, this carries the pre war 5 digit codes, these were replaced by the more familiar 4 digit codes in 1939, just a few months before the war.

The white marks on the right wing are a bit of a mystery. They are clearly seen on the photo's of this aircraft. There is no marking for the left wing and its not visible on the real thing, but this could simply be because they can't be seen against the light grey background. I can only assume its an old marking that's been replaced, but its a bit odd that it has not been painted out completely.

Next up will be some weathering, as a peace time aircraft, this will be rather light, and that should be about it.

I got the painting finished last night. During my research I came across several photo's on the aircraft I am doing, 52 C24. This showed that the scheme suggested by SH is different to the real aircraft. Upon further searching, I came across another A-2 of the same unit with the code 52 D24. The scheme on this matched that on the SH instructions. So, using the photo's I have of C24, 3 in total, I have tried to replicate the actual scheme. Its been a bit tricky as the top of the wings are not clear to see and its hard to determine the demarcation between the green and brown, so this is a best guess.

The scheme at this period was not as standardised as the later 70/71 scheme. Many aircraft had more of the light grey than this one. I rather like this scheme. I have another A Stuka which will be done in Condor Legion markings which also carries this scheme, but I would also like to do other types in these colours. This period in the lead up to WW2 seems to be often over looked (guilty as charged) so its nice to be able to redress that, if only in a small way.

So here's the pics.

Thanks for looking. All comments, suggestions and pats on the back Wink welcome as always.

Next up my favourite bit, the decals.

............. there a lot of kits you just can't get in the UK so I often find myself buying from the far east or US.

Airfix have been producing some pretty good new kits lately, I am sure they will get round to at least one Stuka soon. Now if only someone would produce a C before I have to scratch one,

I have noticed many kits are only available from far east sources and I really should take the time to order on-line but have usually been too busy multi-taskingSad

As for companies issuing kits I want;.....that usually occurs after I scratch build the model...........Bang Head

Spruce, I guess you have to take the good with the bad in places like that. I get the vast majority of my kits on line. We don't tend to have as many of these shows as you guys seem to have. And there a lot of kits you just can't get in the UK so I often find myself buying from the far east or US.

deattilio, thanks. O I do lose my fair share to the monster, though I am able to recover the odd bit here and there. I dropped one of the PE foot peddles on this one but thankfully I managed to prize it away from the carpet.

Looking impressive, especially the interior.  Fear alone must have you miles away from the carpet monster!  With my luck that gunner's seat would have been devoured by that insatiable beast.

I need to start going to stuff like this. people seem to get some great deals and I am sure the ones here must be the same. There's a lot of good 72nd Stuka kits out there. I don't have any Airfix, Italeri of Hobby Boss Stuka's, but the others are all good kits, you can't go wrong really. Even these SH kits are nice seeing as they are Limited Run kits.

I have obtained some great deals on 1978 MPC versions of the 1/24 scale Airfix STUKA, Bf 109 and P-51D but decals were either useless or missing and replacements for those kits are hard to find.
OTOH.............I would never have been able to afford to pay retail for them so I suppose I can afford to wait until I locate decals.
.
I have been buying more at swap meets than hobby shops lately but two Northern Illinois hobby shops closed in the last year so I am almost depending on the shows as I rarely buy on-line.
.
Long time ago in a .......well, a long time ago.........I built the original Airfix Ju 87B kit.
Considering the amazing 1/72 scale kits issued recently by that company I would not be surprised if they could make an equally amazing series if given time and resources.

............something of a drive for me but dealers usually attend bringing books as well as kits to the shows so I will check for the Kagero books as well as some 1/72 STUKA kits if I attend.Big Smile

I will look into that MPM profile for sure. I also have the Condor Legion kit, and I plan on getting another for an A-1 build. Those kagero D/G books are pretty new so should still be easy to get. I keep looking for the A/B book, I will get one as soon as I find it.

Spruce, thanks for the info, I will check those out. I have got the two new Kagero titles on the 87D/G, but those older ones are tricky to find. Is this the MPM Profile you mentioned.

www.asisbiz.com/.../REF-MBI-MPM-Profile-Junkers-Ju-87-A-Stuka-0A.html

Not heard of this before, will defiantly have to look into that.

SH have 3 Ju 87A kits. they are all the same kit with different markings. Apart from this one, there is one in Condor Legion markings, that's needs a little work to be accurate as the rudder should be a slightly different shape as it should be an A-0/1. The other kit is in Japanese markings.

Bish:  that MPM profile is the publication I own.

Worth getting for the detail drawings even if never incorporated into a build.Yes

I missed out on the Kagero Ju 87D / G publications but do have the Japanese Aero Detail publication on that STUKA. version.

The Kagero Vol 1 has information and layout drawings on the A and B,  color profiles of those two marks plus a couple color profiles of the D

I will definitely look for the SH kits.
