New Layout Grief
Posted by bvallot on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 1:31 PM

Is anybody else out there losing there minds yet with the new layout?! lol  It's so white.  I feel like my eyes don't know where to go anymore...like I'm in Finescale Purgatory!! LOL =D

I don't think I'll ever get used to this.  Way too damn white.

I'll reserve my judgement a few days, as I am sure they are working out some kinks still.

The white does not bug me so much a the changes to "your discussions" (now only showing threads that you started) and the inability to go to the most recent post on any thread directly.

I'm with you Stik.  I also don't like that I can't see which threads I've viewed, or if there is a new post since the last time I was on.

Is there seriously not a mobile version of this mess? I just switched to desktop view, and its the same freaking thing. How am I even supposed to use this site like this?

Yeah...this is awful. I don't know why you mess with what isn't broken, but what do I know.

I like it! The white is so clean looking.

No worries Aaron!  Just a quick poll to see if I'm the only one out there that fears change. lol  I've no doubt there's somebody tinkering with some things about it.

Stik, I'm with you.  I suppose it'll just take some getting used to a new format. The conversation feature may return.

I would like to see a little less bright background, but not as dark as it was prior to the change.  Also, I can't find a way to permanently select descending order for post displays, I think I set that before from settings.  Overall though I like most of what I see.

try turning your phone sideways and see how the screen looks then. Mine was better and showed full messages when I did that.

There is to much white, I find it very annoying and painful.

Ditto stik. Not only that but you can't preview your post as before. What hapenned to all my gold stars? ans all this white does not look right.

Why fix what is not broke? I'm sorry but I do not like this so called new and better format. I rather have the old and reliable one.

Hi ajd3530,

We'll look into this and see what we can come up with.

I think it is important to note here that web pages get updated sometimes to not only improve a "look" or "brand" but often to improve the coding that helps deal with all the activity that occurs on the web page. Some times there are security issues to improve as well, but mostly it's the functionality of the site. So, hang in there guys. The aesthetics behind the site is usually an easy fix once you have the bones behind it all set up and working. =] My first little jab was really just to echo what we were all thinking...trying to find the brightness button for our screens. =D

And on a side note...I just saw your video about the 1:32 Mossy (Aaron & Tim), and you may have just convinced me to go up a scale...only I'll likely have to start building a table or bookcase first!! ...modeling problems huh. =]

I don't mind the new layout and the larger font is a good thing. The part that does actually bother my eyes, and therefore forces me to leave sooner than before, is the white is just too bright and it makes reading more difficult for me now. If they could grey it down or yellow it down a bit then it would be okay. It is a greater strain on my eyes now, but I am sure they are working on it.

With a graphic design background, I am always an advocate for white space, but I agree with others who find this layout too white. To my eye, the message blocks would stand out better and be more legible against a neutral background. As for functionality, I think we'll get used to it just like the last rework several years ago. I'm sure the designers feel that the changes are an improvement, and I hope they'll take our feedback into account as they implement the new site. Mike

Yeah, forum navigation seems to be at least three steps backwards compared to the last two iterations of the site forum....

I am very much in Infantry phase with the changes here... Wink

In the Army the officers send the men off to die.

In the Navy the officers go off with the men to die.

In the Air Force the men send the officers off to die.

I have to say that I am not warming up to it for two reasons:

1.  How do I following threads I posted in but did not start?

2.  Can't seem to find the search forum button

Of course I just "upgraded" to Win10 so maybe this is all too much for these old eyes....

1.) Currrently, you can not. you have to manualy search for any thread that you have participated in."Your Discussions" only shows threads that you personally have started

2.) There is a magnifying glass icon on the forum toolbar on teh right side- but it searches the entire site...

I have not upgraded to windows 10 (nor will I), and am using Safari as my browser at the moment...

1.  Really..  That is not good IMO.

2.  See number 1.:)

And losing these two things were offset by a larger white space.  Color me underwhelmed.

I use Firefox and Win10.  Works just fine for me.
