1/48 Tamiya Dornier Do 335 B-2 (Finished)

Man you're right about the cockpit. I do have  the "double throw down" Aires set with mine along with the landing gear internals and all that stuff for one of these jobs (which I do have in the stash). These pits of yours always turn out great and this one is really coming to life with all that detail.  Looks good so far Joe!

I've always wanted to make a Tamiya version of the Arrow.  Instead, out of nostalgia, I purchased the Revell brand Arrow.  I'll be watching closely as this maybe my next build!  Great job on the cockpit, it looks superb.

I always liked the 335 and I think it is one of the coolest experimentals ever. Your work is exceptional as usual. Good to know you don't need extra pit bits for this one so I won't waste the money on a pit when I add one to the stash.

What always amazes me about this aircraft is the size compared to other fighters.  It was a monster.  I've built the revell one and have been toying with the idea of getting this kit.

Glad to see you busy with something you'll enjoy. =]  That's one of the nicest Tamiya cockpits I've ever seen.  That some sort of fluke?! lol.

I'm glad to see this WIP.  I'm rolling on to the 335 A-12 after I wrap up my Ta-152.  Looking for ward to seeing your progress.  The cockpit looks fantastic!

Thanks guys.  I got some bench time in last night. It consisted of me and my trusty bottle of Tenax.  So far this thing has nearly built itself.  The fuselage lined up beautifully and the top insert fit nice.  I spot glued it, as well as the top cowl, in place to avoid panel line loss due to the "hot" Tenax.  The wings went together without issue and are designed to snap in place, which alleviated any wing root issues. Very nice touch.  I'm really enjoying this build so far.  I should be painting soon..

Looking great.  I have the A version of that kit with all the CMK goodies to convert to a B-1, open up both engine bays and the upper fuel cell behind the cockpit.  Hope that mine looks as nice as yours it turning out!

SUch a nice cockpit, as always. I, too, think this is one cool bird, since it's so unlike anything else. GLad to hear it's coming along well. Just how big is it? Are we talking bigger than a P-47?

Thanks Guys, Brandon, its fairly big, considerably longer that the P-47.  It was comperable in weight though with a max take off weight of just over 21,000 lbs (the P-47 was around 18,000 I believe).  I'm sure the lion's share was from the two engines.  

Sorry its been so long since an update but life gets in the way of modeling sometimes.  Anyways, where was I?  Oh yeah, I shaded the lines for the paint scheme.  Norrmally I only prime the seams, as I go by the motto of the less layers of paint the better, especially on those kits with shallower panel lines. I'm building one of 2 B-2 Zerstorer planes built, that being V14, which is one of the kit options. I went with RLM 81/82 over 65 (My research showed that very late war stuff could be either 65 or 76, I dared to be different).  Here I fired my version of 65, half XF-23 Light Blue and XF-2 Flat White.

After some postshading for weathering (I'm not going to go crazy here as these didn't see combat), I layed down Gunze RLM 82.  Perhaps I'm not used to late war stuff, but I thought it would have more brown in it and perhaps look a little less like my grandfather's 1973 Ford Maverick.  Oh well, Gunze knows better than me.  I added a smidge of XF-2 and lightly streaked it.     

Now the fun part.  I used Tamiya tape for the splintering then filled it in with the cheap stuff.  I also preshaded those exposed panel lines again. 

I then put down the RLM 81.  I added some XF-57 Buff and streaked the color as well.  After some postshading heres we are.  

Gloss coat and decals soon. 

Looking super good. The paint work is just fantastic.

Greta job on the scheme there. Nice to see Gunze are another compan that have not switched to the green RLM 81. I do like that brown version.

Looking superb.  I do like the subtle effects that the streaking gives your finish.  Will have to try that sometime soon.

Thanks all, I finished her up the other night and I'm pretty happy with it.  To recap, its the B-2 heavily armed version with a pair of MK. 103 cannons in the wings.  They made two, that being V-13 and V-14.  I built V-14 whose markings were one of the kit options.  I added PE seatbelts and Quickboost exhausts.  I ended up tossing the True Details wheels and I used the kit wheels, which just looked better to me.  I gambled and used the kit decals.  Surprisingly they behaved beautifully.  Maybe Tamiya has been given a bad rap and their newer stuff is better.  I didn't chance the large lower crosses however and decided to replace them with an old Me 110 sheet I had.

She's a beauty.  Glad to hear the decals are of a decent quality.  I was about to order a set of aftermarket decals for my 335 but I think I'll save my money for another endeavor.
