That's how I do it too Joe otherwise you loose the marbling effect. That subtle effect really adds to the paint job and breaks up the monotone colors and adds tonal changes. It's gonna look fantastic once completed. Beer

That is some excellent painting and even more remarkable masking. The marbling effect seems to be working out quite well. Gotta give you a fewBow DownBow Down for your efforts in masking. Either that or recommend a good therapist.Big Smile

Looking good! You can really see the variation due to the marbling. I’m digging it!

You must really like masking, though...Stick out tongue

Thanks you guys. I'm gonna need all the encouragement I can get.

I spent the better part of 3 hours this morning applying paint. I already know I'm going to hear it from somebody because I've been telling myself all morning long that I must like to make things difficult. I have applied these colors in patches rather than go over most of the bird with the predominant color. I made the mistake of applying the predominant color once on my Stuka and I didn't much care for it because when I went back over the base color with the second camo color it looked to thick. So I opted to do things this way. I've also opted not to put the cockpit on just yet. I'll get to that in due time and in my own fashion...……..the hard way. I do like the benefits of the marble pattern and will more than likely continue that trend. There is a couple of touch ups that I need to do between the camo colors but I do like this way even though it is time consuming. I spend more time masking than I've spent on any other area of the model.

It appears that you have done a right sharp job on creating the base for the mottling effect. I do hope it turns out to your expectations.

I regret that I have not been on top of following along here lately. I've had family visiting which kept me off the forums for a while.

I am really looking forward to seeing some paint going on your Arado.

I hear what your saying Max. A dark base color would tend to get in the way of a darker base color. Like it's defeating the purpose kind of.

Thanks for the comments and for following along Joe and Max.Yes

The colors were too dark to get a really good effect. Black beneath camouflage on a BoB Spitfire and a late war Zero with green topside camouflage was just too much for black basing I think. A mottle like you are working on look to be the way to go.

Plus I tend to be heavy with the paint sometimes...

No worries Max. What happened with the results on the upper surfaces on your build?

Thanks for clearing that up Max.  I run into good guys on forums and then we all meet ............the clowns. Sometimes the spirit of the message is lost in the text so I really appreciate your comments. My primer coat is the same kind of primer I use on all of my black auto builds. It lays down nice and smooth and by the time I get the marble and top coats on it'll flatten out alot.

Sorry if it seemed as I was venturing into clown territory... I’ve been here long enough to see a few of those! Just a poorly executed attempt at some levity. Ask my wife how good I am at that!

I’ve tried black basing on two of my latest kits, and while I’m super happy with the results on the underside, I’ve been less impressed up top. The marbling technique you’ve employed here might be worth a shot on my end for my next build.

Anyway, sorry for any confusion. I’m just looking forward to seeing this one wrapped up!

Looking really good Joe! Getting the tighter marbling was a good idea. I think the larger black patches you had beforebwould have really shown through and been too stark against the rest of the paint...or at least that’s what I’ve foundBig Smile

Looking forward to seeing more paint on itYes

Thanks Ernie. I went ahead and decided to go with the 150 this time around for times sake. I didn't feel like going through the hassle of cleaning that Velocity this morning and the 150 lends itself to easy clean up so.....we went with that. Maybe next time on the V.

Well to be perfectly honest I couldn't resist and I went back over it again in a much tighter pattern with my Badger 150 after not using it for the past 5 years. I'm actually a lot happier with the results this time around..

The Arado is looking great Joe. A tight mottling scheme will look great but most of the marbling will be lost in the pattern.

I have a Renegade and it’s awesome at laying down hair thin lines with the right paint/thinner ratio. I use it for any xtra fine details like tight mottling and feather edging.

Thanks Britt. I'm going to do just that because I wasn't just real happy with the attempt that I made here. I used my Badger 200 for the marble job but have other weapons of choice in my arsenal.

In the picture below starting from the bottom and working up is my trusty 200 that I LOVE!! Then the 150 and then the Renegade Velocity. The Velocity I know will do that tighter pattern but I haven't really tried the 150 yet. I may test them both out on a test subject to see what I get out of it.

I hear ya. Reason I ask is depending  on what you go with it may help to put one more coat of either a lighter grey scale or a muted lighter color within the color range of what goes on top but laid down in a tighter fashion of marbling. Just another way to add depth to your surface.

Very nice Joe. Glad to see you back on that horse. =] What camo scheme will you be doing here? I'm less familiar with German bomber camos. I've seen my share of them, I'm just not as versed as with Allied or Japanese camo schemes.

Thanks Britt. I go back and forth on a scheme so I don't really know which one I'll be going with just yet. I may just do the standard camo pattern since it's going to be an opened up build. God knows I've thrown about everything at this one detail wise already. lol

I'm really not sure how to take that but that's the intent alright.

Haha I just meant that I’m trying to learn a new trick, and figure out how to have some more realistic finishes on my birds.

I gotta say, your primer looks better than all of my paint jobs I’ve ever done haha, except maybe one... a rattle can job I did when I was like 12 years old!

I bet you hesitated spraying gray on that black finish lol

LOL! You know it Nick!! I had given thought to a "Wet Look" Gloss treatment with a bowtie on the sides rather than a cross and two big block blown Chevrolet engines under each wing!!! LOL
