1/48 Tamiya F4F-4 Wildcat VMF 112 "Jefferson DeBlanc" (FINISHED)
Posted by lawdog114 on Saturday, August 13, 2016 3:30 AM

I originally wasn't going to do a work in progress on this one, but I ultimately decided to share it anyways.  It's the 1/48 Tamiya F4F4 Grumman Wildcat, one of my favorite kits.  This was one of the first kits I tackled when I returned to the hobby and it played a huge part in my continued addiction to scale aviation modeling. This kit is so easy to build you really have to try hard to screw it up.  After a disasterous Monogram P-61, I saw this one at Hobby Lobby and had to try it.  I said..."well, maybe I can do this".  20 years later...here I am with you fine folksToast

Anyways, I'm building black 29, flown by First Lieutenant Jefferson DeBlanc of VMF112 on Guadalcanal.  On January 31st, 1943, Deblanc lead 8 Wildcats on an SBD Dauntless bomber escort mission over the Solomon Islands.  He quickly sprung a fuel leak and knew it was a one way mission.  He considered turning back deriliction of duty, so he pressed on.  He told the other to send out rescue because he'd be "down there with the sharks".  Well, DeBlanc then proceeded to shoot down 2 FM1 Petes and 3 Ki-43 Oscars in a matter of 5 minutes.  He was ultimately shot down himself and managed to evade capture for 3 days. In his ordeal he was eventually bartered from one tribe to another for "1 ten pound sack of rice" and eventually made it back to base.  Deblanc would win the Medal of Honor for his selfless actions on that day and shoot down a total of 9 enemy aircraft in 2 tours during the war.  Here's my homage to a true hero.

I'll dress it up with an Ultracast seat and Eduard PE in the pit.

I started with the pit.  The first thing I did was cut out the floor, as the Wildcat didn't really have one.

Truthfully, the out of the box pit is really good.  Anything extra is just a bonus.  I can rarely resist Ultracast seats though.  I pretty much just used the photoetched instrument panel and rudders.   The pit was done in Gunze Interior Green with a brown black Detailer wash

Ready to close her up.

Hardly even worth mentioning......a true shake and bake kit....

I then directed my attention to the Pratt Whitney R-1830.  Tamiya does a nice rendition, to include molded in ignition wires, but it could stand some improvement.  I figured I'd add new wires over the molded ones, with the hopes the old wires wouldn't be that visible.  I wasn't willing to scrape off the molded wires and risk losing the cylinder detail.  Smoke and mirrors...my modeling motto.

First we need a ignition ring. Some .25 Styrene rod works great secured with Tenax

Now we need the leads.  Glue two pieces of .10 rod together and slice off the leads to the right length.  Also attach with Tenax where appropriate.

Now the fun part (sarcasm).  Get some old copper stereo wire and cut then to the right length.  Bend and attach with instant superglue.  No need to paint these as they were normally a copper color.  It's really not that bad and goes quick once you get going.

Once done, I primed it for Alclad Aluminum.

I taped off the gearbox since it was going to stay grey and sprayed the Aluminum thusly.

Here we are with hand painted magnetos then dry brushed silver.  I also hand painted the ring and leads Model Master Chrome Silver.

I sprayed it with Testors Gloss as a barrier for the Detailer wash. This is where it starts to look the part...nice oily.

Here it is after a shot of Testors Dull then X-19 Smoke which adds that little extra to it.......I'm done.

I'll have another update soon...

Joe

Thank you for sharing the WIP.  I've picked up a few ideas just by watching your build.  Extremely nice job on the cockpit and especially the engine!  Fantastic!  I wish my Hobby Lobby had a Tamiya F4F4, I would snatch it up. LOL!

Thanks guys...

Toshi, many many moons ago Hobby Lobby used to carry a nice selection of Tamiya, Hasegawa, Accurate Miniatures, etc., but now they seem to only carry Revell-O-Gram exclusively.  I guess they got tired of me buying all of their Tamiya P-47s with the 40% off coupons. Good times....

Oh wow!  That must have been so cool!  I wish they still did, I too would buy as many kits like you mentioned at 40% off everyday and actually build up a stash!  LOL!

That really sounds like good times.  I wish it was so now!  Thank you for the information.

The Hobby Lobby here in the great metropolis of Greeenville, NC, just opened about a couple of monts ago. I was in there yesterday. I saw kits by Revell, Monogram, Academy, Tamiya, and Lindberg (i.e., Round 2). I picked up the Lindberg Avro Biplane, a reissue of a fine old Inpact kit from about fifty years ago. There was also a package deal containing the old Pyro/LifeLike/Lindberg/Round 2 1/1200 North Carolina-class battleship and Essex-class carrier- and quite a few AMT kits. I wouldn't call it an excellent, or even good, assortment of kits, but I fear it's now the biggest one in Greenville.

I remember buying those 1/1200 Pyro warships for 50 cents apiece at the corner drug store. So I could buy those that battleship and carrier for a dollar. The price at Hobby Lobby yesterday (drum roll, please): $20.00. I feel old (as usual).

I suspect Hobby Lobby tells some distributor how many feet of shelf space it has available for models, and relies on the distributor to pick the kits. I've seen no evidence that anybody working in the store knows anything about model building.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Wow, Nice start and good how-to presentation I must say. That engine is awesome not to take away from that really nice cockpit. Good work! Cool history thrown in, what could be better?

Your P&W looks fantastic.

I have this kit (as well as a Hobby Boss, Monogram and Revell 1/32) on my build schedule for later this year. I may try to accomplish the same great work as you have thus far. Looking forward to seeing your completed Wildcat.

I'm glad I don't have to make a choice, but I would not patronize HL.

Nice model though.

Dog

Those added scratched out details really dress up the engine and of course your usual pit work is outstanding.

I too remember when HL had a nice selection of Tamiya, Revell and Trumpeter. Those 40% discount coupons were VERY handy indeed.

Thanks all.  I'm glad some may get use out of it.  Well, I got the airframe painted the other night.  I started with a preshade.  All those Grumman rivets...ugh!

I sprayed the bottom XF-19 Sky Grey.

I added XF-2 Flat White and added some subtle streaking and I lightened the control surfaces.

I keep a premixed bottle of XF-64 Red Brown and XF-1 Flat Black which is diluted with 91% alcohol. I use it as a weathering post shade. For darker colors I add a touch more black.

For the upper ANA 608 Intermediate Blue, I used Tamiya's recommendation of  5 drops of XF-18 Medium Blue and 2 drops of XF-2 White. I added a smidge of XF-82 RAF Ocean Grey for good measure. I gave it the same weathering treatment as the lower side.

Here's an idea how the rigged engine will look.  I'm fairly happy so far.

I hope to be ready for a clear coat and decals soon..

Love how she's coming Joe! Yes

Funny, I was watching the 'Dogfights' episode with LeBlanc about a month or so ago. He talked about his rescue, 'Some people don't know what they're worth but I do... I'm worth a 10 lb. bag of rice.'

Bow Down Amazing work as always Joe.  I don't know how you do the pit but it always looks like you masked and airbrushed every tiny detail.  I know if tried making this plane all I could make would be "a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl....." Thanks for sharing

Really gorgeous work Joe. I'm glad you chose to share your F4F build with us. I'm certainly picking up some tips from you for when I get around to mine that I have. I'm with you in that I will always pick up an Ultracast seat if it is available for the subject I'm building. They are excellent resin upgrades. And, yes, I have a few Tamiya kits from HL that I either scored with 40% coupon or on the clearance shelf. As a matter of fact, I've probably found more deals on the clearance shelf. Keep that stellar stuff coming.

....was one of my inspirations for this build.  The Old Cajun. He was an entertaining story teller indeed.  Jim Swett too, "prop stuck up like a middle finger".  What a great series, which has inspired many of my builds. I wish these brave men were still with us but unfortunately they are almost all gone now.

Thanks for the kind words all...
