AVG - Flying Tigers
Posted by BlackWolf3945 on Saturday, March 22, 2003 12:41 PM
I'm a nut for P-40's and specifically those of the AVG. I have a good amount of reference already, but perhaps someone out there has come across something that I may have missed. If you know of a website please throw the link my way! If you know of a book that's been published, please let me know.

I have a major project planned, and though it will take some time for my ideas to come to fruition, I want to get a head start. Especially in the R&D department!

THANKS 2 MUCH!

Hey Blackwolfscd,

I've found a website devoted to the AVG and the P-40. It has quite a bit of information concerning both. Hope this helps.

While we're on the subject, General Robert L. Scott of "God is My Copliot" fame will celebrate his 90th birthday next week. An AVG art show is being held at the Warner Robins Museum of Air on April 3. The General will be on hand to discuss his service with the AVG and the 23rd FG in WWII. Very pleasant and generous man. Check out the Rober L. Scott Fan Club site, as well as the Warner Robins Museum site for details. - Ed

One book that has A LOT of P-40 pics is the Squadron/Signal "49th Fighter Group," by Ernest McDowell.

Another useful booklet is FAOTW #117, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, if you can still find it.

Try "A Pictorial History of the Flying Tigers" by Larry Pistole. Lots of color and black and white photos, lots of personal and unusual info on the AVG.. Was out of production for years, but has been reprinted recently. Check Amazon.com and eBay. Barnes &Noble and BooksAMIllion can special order it for you. I think the price is about $35-40 bucks. -Ed

Butz,

What have you been smokin' over the last week or so? Tongue [:P] You know very well that I bought Ace out when he got the AVG special in a couple years back. Wink [;)] And yeah, a "Major Project". Can you say 99 Hawks? Tongue [:P]Wink [;)]

Fitter,

Thanks, got 'em both!

Keyworth,

Bob Scott is indeed a generous man, a friend of mine took my original hard-cover copy of "God is My Co-Pilot" down to WR for him to sign. Really nice guy, I wish I could be there to meet and thank him in person.

Boybuddho,

Yep, have seen that site, thanks though!

And last, but not least... Shaggy,

I have NOT seen that site before. Thanks 2 much! (I'm still waiting for reference shots of the interior of the Mystery Machine! Pizza-pie stains all over?)

Keyworth,

Yep, have that book too. I lucked out with that one, we took a trip to the IPMS NATS last year in Virginia Beach and made an un-guided tour of the middle-upper east coast on the way down. Stopped in DC to see the Smithsonian, Arlington and all the joggers in spandex (Tongue [:P]) and found a copy in the Smithsonian gift shop, marked down to $25. Got back to the hotel room and discovered it was signed! Someone goofed BIG time. hehe

Great book!

Slick, really slick. I had taht happen with a couple of bios I found at a small bookstore. Trade paperback editions of Joe Foss' bio and Dean Hess' (Battle Hymn; made into a flick w/Rock Hudson.) Got home, opened them and found legit autographs. Do you Have the Ospry Camo and Markings of the AVG? -Ed

I was gonna build Kibosh when I was about 14. I used the Revell kit and did a really nice scratchbuilt cockpit, then promptly melted it with too strong and saturated a wash! LMAO

Perhaps I'll try that one again sometime, no scratch stuff though!.

Ace Hobby Shop in Niagara Falls, NY. Yeah, they're still there. Just moved to a new location within the last year or so. I noticed earlier that you're from WNY? (I think you mentioned Buffalo in a post)

Wow... it used to be one of my favorites... they were in a pretty seedy part of town, over near Hyde Park, I believe. Where are they now? They always had a great selection of aftermarket detail sets, like the Verlinden stuff, etc.

Yeah, I'm from the Buffalo area... used to belong to the local IPMS back when the meetings were held in D.W.'s basement.

Oooooh....DW, that was a while ago, wasn't it? I was a junior in the club at that time.

Ace moved to a bit better part of town, he's on Niagara Street now, just a few blocks away from Hyde Park. Just down the street from our fellow FSMer Butz, matter of fact.

It's a really nice shop. 'Twas a nice shop before, kinda cozy little hole in the wall. But now it's quite a bit larger, he's got even more stuff now and has a rather large slot car track. The slots are a buncha fun, even for a modeler!

DECENT! I'll have to check this out... I used to race slot cars back in the ' 60's when it was so popular. Looking for a better hobby shop anyway; some of the "big" ones don't seem to have the latest or the coolest stuff.

BTW, I used to live in San Jose, Calif. years ago, and San Antonio Hobby Shop was THE place to be... Thursday nights they were open late, and all the "regulars" hung out there.

Hehe, "BiG" hobby shops? I wonder which one you might be talking about...

Have you seen our Caboose? Tongue [:P]

I know what you mean, I worked at that "BIG" shop for a while about ten years ago and they don't really know models. All they know is when to empty the cash register. Tongue [:P]

OMG! Now I know who you are! Yeah, I'm the kid that had your Aero book. Shortly after I last saw you at Niagara, I left. Had to get outta that place. Is that around the time you moved to San Jose? Or was that after? I don't recall.

Unfortunately, and I'm a bit ashamed to say this, a few years ago I lent a bunch of books to a "close" friend. I never got them back, and he avoided folks in the club like the plague. I am sad to say that the Aero book was among them.

And I dunno what else to say, except I was rather upset about the whole thing. Especially since one of them wasn't mine. He was a good guy and quite trustworthy, or so I thought. I guess I owe you a book! And, to boot, one that's harder to find than the Sabres around the Arena in April.

We'll have to meet up at Ace sometime so you can slap me upside the head! Black Eye [B)]

Please accept my most sincere apologies. Blush [:I]

LOL... well, don't worry about it. If you do see him again, hit him up for it. I had a similar thing happen to me, except the person who had my books died, and they threw all "his" stuff away.

Say hi to your Dad for me! It's been a long time. You guys both still in the local IPMS??

See you at Ace!

That happened to me too, but with a decal sheet. I think this fella got to actually use it before he went, though, so at least I feel good about that!

Unfortunately, my Dad passed away last year. Right around the time of BuffCon. So this year is gonna be different and maybe a bit tuff, but we'll see. And yeah, I'm still in the club. More for the close friends I've made than the club itself. And things may change this year... long story but I see rough times ahead. I hope I'm wrong.

I'd probably be at Ace tonite, (Wednesdays are our "usual" regular night) except I had a short stay at the hospital yeterday morning, kidney stone. My second, and all I have to say is FUN-WOW.

I'm still a bit sore (still in there) but the hydrocodone is GREAT stuff! It also took all my energy away, so I'm not quite a walking bag of Jell-O, but close! LOL I may still make an effort though, depends on the crew.

Anyhoo, see 'ya at Ace and if you can make it, BuffCon. (April 6th)

If you want to email me, maybe we can arrange to meet some night up there. I'd also like to get some track time in, but as of late the kids have taken over the slots. Ron should change the name from Ace Hobby to Ron's Day-Care! LOL

Anyhoo, catch ya!

Steve-O

Steve:

Sorry to hear about your Dad. It just shows how long I've been out of the loop.

BUFCON? It's been a long time since I went to one of these, too. I'll see if I can make it.

You hang in there, OK?

Hey, blackwolfscd, I bring greetings from General Scott. Got to go to Warner Robins today and see him at the AVG show I mentioned earlier. He's not as physically spry as he used to be, but his mind is like a steel trap. It'd been over a year since I'd last seen him, and he remembered the day and circumstnaces of our last meeting. He's as gracious as ever. He said to say "Hi" to all the modeller's and aviation enthusiasts out there. - Ed
