I don't have any specific recommendations but I do suggest looking up Shep Paine.  The old Monogram kits once came with pamplets displaying his work, which often included battle damage.

Edit to add:  I have many of those old pamplets.  I will scan the one on the B-17 and post the image here later today.

I remember my Dad had a book about the B57 Canberra, and remember several pages showing some significant damage where the bird still returned home.  Unfortunately, I can't find that book in his things, and don't remember the title, but yes, there are books out there.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

The b57 book is the Osprey combat aircraft series no 85 by TE Bell.  I was lucky enough to have been contacted by Mr Bell to build the damaged b57 for the pilot, col Larry Mason who received the Air Force Cross for bringing that plane back and saving his Weapons Officer.

I have detailed pictures from col Mason and step by step photos that I can share with you of how I created some of that damage.  If you have the Sept 2014 issue of FSM, it's published as an article there too. let me know if I can help.

And yeah, classic Shep Paine diorama! I looked over that pamphlet as a kid for years. Wish I still have the original.
