RAF GB feeler
Posted by Bish on Sunday, November 20, 2016 1:39 AM

I thought i would get this one out early before people start planning their builds for next year.

April 1st 1918 saw the founding of the worlds first Independent Air Force, the RAF (AKA Crab Air), with the amalgamation of the Army's Royal Flying Corps and the Navy's Royal Naval Air Service.

So, who would like to join in marking this event in the way we know best, with a Group Build. If there is enough interest, the build will run from April 1st 2017 for 12 months. It would be open to any build from the RAF, aircraft of course but also vehciles, figures, busts and anything else RAF related.

It would also be open to builds from the RAF predecessors, the RFC and RNAS, as well as Fleet Air Arm builds from its founding by the RAF in 1924 until it was handed over to the Navy in 1939. Also included would be foreign Squadrons which flew with the RAF.

So, put your name down and help mark this event.

What a wonderful reason to build my Tamiya 1/48 Bristol Beaufighter Mk.VI (a gift from a friend, who I hope might join in too).

I do hope you will send out reminders or otherwise transmit a wake-up call, Bish. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night. Remembering something into next April is quite a stretch. Sleep

I'm just a Noob Hack, but I have a Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant shipped to me soon. I plan on working on it between "Temper Tantrums" over my "winterbuild" of a ICM T 35. You can count me in if your expectations are low....Sad

Glad to have you aboard Das. Just be warned, GB's can be addictive.

And we don't have expections, just some fun and a few laughs thrown in. And now and again we build some models. Big Smile

Is the RAAF included in that, or is it not an option? Just curious.

Hmm.  I could be in if I get an RAF kit into the stash by then.  Would RCAF do?

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

I've been trying to get people to re-engage with the old Fleet Air Arm which alternated between  FAA and RAF but it doesn't seem to be happening.  So I guess I would be in with a Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster.

Mike, Colin, i did give that a lot of thought. But i decided to keep this pure UK RAF. Apart from the fact that the other nations came later, i know they were proud to form there own forces independant of the Mother country and i thinkitwould do them adis-serivice simply to lump them alltogether.

Edit: I just want to clarify. The RAAF, RCAF, RNZAF and squadrons of other nations which served under RAF comand in WW2 will be ok.

Chris, rocker, great to have you on board.

John, untili looked into it, i had not realised that the FAA was formed by the RAF. As i mentioned, FAA builds while it was under the RAF would be fine, and glad to have you on board. I am guessing that kit is a biggy, will be looking forward to that.

Seems to be a lot on interest in this already. Thanks guys, i reckon this is a go. Watch out for the build thread at the start of March.

I'm in. I was thinking Airfix defiant, but looks like that's already spoken for, as well as the Tamiya Mosquito. Maybe the Airfix Spitfire Mk I.

Glad to have you Steve. No problem having more than one of the same kit, so don't let that put you off. But what ever you decide, it will be welcome.

Please pencil me in. I have 3 in the stash and will choose one once we get closer. I have all in 1/32 Monogram old Typhoon car door, a Hurricane with am resin pit and the new Revell Spitfire. I'm leaning on the Hurricane cuz of that gorgeous pit and some really cool am decals to go with them.
