Completed 1/11/17 Academy 1/72 P-51D Mustang
Posted by Toshi on Saturday, January 7, 2017 5:43 PM

Here is my next project build.  I've already built a Academy 1/72 Mustang dressed in OD.  This will be a NMF Mustang.  This is one of the Christmas presents from Mrs. Toshi.  I'm glad I have something to keep me busy especially in this North East Ohio winter weather.  It's a balmy 7 degrees right now!  LOL!

This build will be OOB.  Simple yet nice, I hope.  It will give me a breather after assembling the C-54D Skymaster.  That was one fun yet very involved build.  I still have a Academy 1/72 TBF Avenger waiting as well as a Academy 1/48 P-38 Lightning with Eduard Brassin AM.

It's tiny!  Lol.  I don't think I could do one of those in that scale.  It has to be about the same size as a P-39 right?  If so I'd have to stick with 1/48, or better yet 1/32.

Totally agree with you on the weather, it's in the teens here currently.

Yes, it's tiny but not as tiny as a 1/144!  LOL!  It's actually not bad at all and Academy does a pretty decent job in fit and finish.  Thank you so much for your support in my projects!

LOL!  I'm using Vallejo Metal Color.  Never tried this before.

These are quite nice for a quick, simple, "decompression" build, after a long project!Toast

The first time I did this kit...the decals wanted no part of being cooperative. It was as if there was somewhere between little and zero adhesive. They were also fairly translusent.

The second time around, just a couple years ago, I jazzed it up a but with different decals and an engine...

I stuck it in the display case at my airport...so I wouldn't have to look at it much!

I nearly picked up this kit before Christmas.

Subscibing!

I expect you'll do this one just as fabulously as your last one.

You're getting really good at these NMF paint schemes. :)

You nailed it; a decompression build.  I don't think there's anything you've built that isn't worth looking at.  Thanks for sharing sir!

I appreciate that...but, it just looks like a turd next to the rest in the stable.

All are Airfix, except for the Tamiya at top/left.

Sorry it took me a few days to reply.  A flu held me back but I'm feeling much better.

I will do my best in building this kit.  Thank you sir for the read and reply.

The Vallejo Acrylic Metal Color is AB ready.  The NMF is beautiful but...

It is extremely sensitive to pressure above 20psi.  It starts to separate.  Under or at 15psi. it atomizes perfectly.  You need a very good coat of primer and a light mist of a coat of Vallejo Metal Color.

Besides this issue of which I also utilized a MAC Iwata valve to correct this, I highly recommend this paint.  Just be mindful that it's extremely sensitive.  Here are a few photos of the process.

Thank you rocker286.  I too like the way the NMF turned out.  Again as I reiterate, this paint is extremely sensitive.  Thanks for the visit.

Wow! That's looking mighty sharp Toshi! I have the Academy P-51B kit in my stash. I build mainly 1/72 aircraft (along with 1/144 & 1/48 too.) Watching your build with extreme interest.

Thank you Bish.  I've never seen it before either.  I purchased the paint at Hobby Town USA.  About a 45 minute drive from my house.  I just bought it on a whim.  It cost $10.00 USD.  Kind of pricey for a small bottle of paint but you don't need that much for coverage.  And I did it in one coat.  Thank you for always following my builds.

Thank you roger_wilco.  I do like these Academy kits.  They're well detailed and have good fit and finish.  The only 1/144 I've built was a Minicraft B-17G.  Thank you for your support.

I wanted to add that the next color that is close to the Vallejo Acrylic is Model Master Enamel Chrome.  It's almost identical.  The draw back of which everyone knows is the the MM enamel takes a while to cure.  The Egyptians built pyramids faster than it does for chrome enamel to cure!  LOL!  And of course bieng an enamel there's the smell issue.  But once cured, it's as hard as a rock.

The Vallejo Acrylic dried and cured overnight.  It really became a hard solid surface 24 hours later.  Although there are no smelly issues, the Vallejo has to be shot at a low psi.  It's a medium that's not for the first time user.  It took me a couple of sample shots to understand how to react with it.  And as I reiterated before, it is an extremely sensitive paint.

I can definately recommend both enamel and acrylic chrome.  Each has it's drawbacks and each has it's strengths.  It's purely as always up to the modeler which medium you would prefer.
