This is actually a good link TBone. Aggieman is correct about the changes made throughout its production. No worries about the color. It'll all work out.
I actually did Marion Carl's Wildcat a few years ago. It was the very first Tamiya Wildcat I ever did too. One thing I'll pass on to you about it is that from referencing photos of the actual aircraft, the No. 2 for his first aircraft out on Henderson Field is shaped like an upside down 5. Many decals you'll see out there just mark it as a regular looking 2.

Cutting Edge seems to have gotten it right, but most others have it wrong...if it matters to you. I actually painted my own from my own mask I made, and I just hand painted the front cowl number. It wasn't too difficult.
