Completed 1/48 Monogram F-14 Tomcat
Posted by JacknewbIII on Sunday, August 26, 2018 5:44 PM

This is a build I have been working on between group builds. I have been mostly building 1/72 lately so this thing just seems huge to me. This was my first attempt at pre-shading panel lines and my lines were to wide propting me to buy a new Badger Sotar for my next attempt as my old airbrush just can't get that fine. This is out of the box with original decals which spent about a month in the window to kill off the yellowing. Not a bad old kit and most issues were self created such as a major error on the tail painting. Another fun build and thanks for taking a look!

Quite a nice job on that fine old beast! I particularly like your weathering...'sturdy' but not over-the-top.

I will, however, be the first sourpuss to jump in and (gently) remind you that it's an F-14.

The F-15 is one of those vulgar USAF machines.... Big Smile

I clearly spent too much time in the AZ heat this weekend lol. Corrected and thank you!

Nicely done, Jack.  Lots of mileage left in those Monogram jets, isn't there.

Nicely done. There are quite a few who would build these kits over the Hasegawa ones

Looks good.  I'm working on the Hasegawa kit and have the Tamiya kit in the wings.  Like the looks of what you have done here for sure.

Thanks,

John

For and older kit and an older AB you did an amazing job. It looks great.

Very nicely done! Especially how you made a nice well worn look. My only critique would be the gray Phoenix and Sidewinder missiles. Gray missiles came along after the switch to the all gray TPS schemes in the early 80s, not before.

Gray missiles or no, you did a stellar job on that F-15... er, 14 (whatever her age is!).  Wink

Great job on the cat.  It's nice to see the old grey/white paint with colorful markings now and again.

Outstanding job on that fine piece of work! If I might ask, what issues did you do that was not self inflicted? I have the newer F-14A offering by Tamiya. But I am curious about the Monogram kit in terms of fit and ease.

Thanks for the compliments and critiques. This was one of the better fits I have seen in an old monogram. There were no issues other than me not being able to follow painting instructions. The front lower half of the fueslage gave me the most trouble as I recall the top being larger than the bottom. I would build this one again for $10 for sure.

At least I'm not the only one.  I have built a few of these in my time and also recall the top being larger than the bottom making that strange seam along the side of the cockpit require a bit of work.  Not to be anything but constructive, but if you are doing another one make a note of the intake warning decals.  To be fair I didn't notice them until I revisited the page.
