Thanks Britt.  I've been experimenting with the AK worn effects fluid.  It's essentially the same as the hairspray method, but actually designed for scale modeling.  The more I use it the more I like it.  

So I tried the X-22 clear with Mr. Leveling Thinner.  Simply outstanding results. Mix it 50-50 anf fire it down.  After a few coats, go back with straight Mr. Leveling over the top.  It's like magic. Dries to a rock hard gloss coat and I had no pebbling. I think I found my new clear gloss.

Thanks Max, as I said above, you gotta give this a shot.  My Alclad Aqua just took a back seat.  

I'm finally done. I recently bought a new (to me) model bench off Let Go and it took me some time to get it set up. It's similar to my old one that the movers broke.  Unfortunately it consumed alot of my free time so modeling took a backseat for a bit.  

To recap, it's the old circa 1982 Tamiya Zero Type 32 Hamp that I tried to whip into something presentable.  I scribed the raised panel lines, added some PE in the pit, rigged the engine, used brass tubing for the wings cannons, and painted on the markings with Montex masks.  I also tried out the AK real colors which were wonderful  I plan to use more of these as I ordered some Luftwaffe colors too.  Maybe a 190 soon?   I also continued to experiment with AK worn effects fluid and I must say I'm liking the effect.  I have been trying to find a balance between realistic chipping and overdoing it. I hope I didn't go too far. I will probably continue to use it sporadically.   

Now I'm really looking forward to their new tooled zero kits. I have several in the stash.

Wow what a beautiful finish, it has the wore look but not over done. I'm really liking the painted on markings too, after seeing you use them masks on your recent builds, I've ordered me some from maketar, they are kabuki instead of vinyl just have to figure out how to use them now.

 

Thanks Clint. Maketar is good but you have to be more careful as they easily tear and stretch, unlike the vinyl Montex.

How were the AK paints compared to Tamiya? I'm surprised the somewhat hot lacquer thinner didn't do any damage. also, wonder how it works over Tamiya's flat clear.

Thanks Ole. I love these AK paints. They spray beautifully. Like I said, the only downside is the small bottles. I had no issues with heat. I think these paints are hybrid acrylic lacquers. The Tamiya clear was rock solid. I suspect the Mr. Leveling Thinner is fairly tame compared to the likes of hardware store thinner, as it’s designed for the hobby. Highly recommended!

Thanks PJ. I tend to agree about Japanese planes, but I still hate the totally peeled look. This is about as far as I’m willing to go. I have to find a way to control it a little bit more for non-Japanese subjects
