Your black looks great. I’m excited to try to apply your technique to some of my planes, specifically the Black Widdows in my stash!

Thanks for sharing, Joe!

The Lanc looks great despite the poor fit issues.  I really like the man cave!

There must be a rule that Lancaster nacelles can't fit well!  Nice digs, Joe.  Get some display cases in there.

Now that I'm finally getting used to my new bench area I got back to work on this turkey.  Where did I leave off? Oh yeah, airframe.  Everything fit fairly nice up until I tried to blend in the engine nacelles at the leading edge wing roots.  I had some gaps, big enough that I needed to fill some with plasticard.  The inserts on the top of the engines at the wing root fit lousy too, particularly the outer port engine.  It was nothing a little putty and sanding couldn't fix though. I shot a little XF-1 Flat Black to check my work (my silver Sharpie dried up).

I decided to get the canopy masking out of the way.  Eduard pre-cut masks were utilized and made the job easy. It looks like the glass will fit nice so they can be painted separately.

Seamwork done and we are ready for paint...

I taped off all the openings then preshaded the panelines.  Since I would be using Montex Masks, I started with the red then added the appropriate masks as needed. I was fortunate that they offered McCarthy's markings.  If you hate using large unforgiving decals for markings, such as RAF roundels, you need to try these. They are worth every penny

I systematcally went through all the colors and masks until got here.

The side roundels require a bit more work with the white and yellow, but again they are worth it. The Tamiya tape is an insurance policy to ensure there is no paint seepage between mask seams.

I think I figured out how to do black convincingly, at least to my eye.  I fired down XF-69 Nato Black, which is essentially a greyish black. I sort of reverse black based it in a mottling manner. To my eye it looks like a dirty faded black paint job. You can see the XF-1 black preshade peeking through.

I liked how it was looking and wanted to experiment further, so I went back and sprayed XF-1 black on the panel lines once again.

I then diluted the XF-69 and dusted it back on until I liked the look. I wanted the panel lines to be seen as later gloss and dull coatings will tone down the effect considerably.

I then added some XF-19 Sky Grey and threw down some streaking.  I also lightened the control surfaces.

I taped off the black with Tamiya tape and used the cheap stuff as filler.  I started on the Dark Earth by going half XF-52 Flat Earth and half XF-64 Red Brown.  I got this far before I realized I didn't mix up enough paint....doh! I hope to continue soon.

So check out my new digs.....It won't be this clean for long.

Another quite unusual build for you after you B-25, Joe! Great to see you tackle on stuff of your comfort zone if I might say so, you're nailing it again :-) Will a therapeutic Tamiya Jug or Mustang follow next? :-D

Not very useful to the thread but I recommend avid readers the classic "Bomber" by Len Deighton ; you get the most realistic feel of a full mission in a Lancaster in 1943... I enjoyed it way more than "Goodbye Mickey Mouse", despite being more interested in the latter's subject!

Nice have you Hobbie, and thanks! I wish I had more time for reading.

I wouldn't be so quick to disparage the Tamya Lancaster, though I would credit it's not like building a current Tamiya kit.  As for the window/hatch thing, it may be they were with windows or without, but the picture below looks like round windows in the hatches as on the Tamiya kit.  I have another photo that shows the front hatch open in flight.

Nah....Life is too short (unless i'm being paid to build it).  Thanks for the info on the hatches.

Interesting build. Looking forward to see how the kit goes together. I have a few 1/48 Tamiya versions in the stash.

Thanks Ole.  I have one in the stash too, but I doubt I'll ever build it.

HKM's new Lancaster is a cracking kit and although it started off as a bigger version of the Tamiya kit I provided copies of all accessible original blueprints in electronic format and technical and maintainance manuals.

"Don't use the Tamiya kit, use these. If you want an accurate kit then you go to the original source!"

just waiting for the AM companies to catch up, a kit like this deserves proper treatment!

I am also interested in where Airfix put the rear spot lamp.

Also I am waiting for their latest 1/24 Release. I saw it at Telford last year, and while it wasn't the ME 262 I had hoped for it is going to be a cracking build!

Still, following this build as the Chastise raid caused more damage and ongoing issues than is given credit for.

Good to have you Dragon.  No clue on the spotlights.  I'm sure I'll be finding out soon,

just you wait until my 1/32 Dambuster Lancaster turns up and I start on the recently obtained 1/32 Mk 1!

Not trying to hijack... looking good though.

The square hatches on the top are emergency exit hatches in case of ditching and don't have a glass circle in them and when in place are flush with the supper skin

I was originally going to do the Tamiya Lancaster, But I hear it’s a real dinosaur and I couldn’t imagine trying to ship that. That 1/32 scale will be monster. It’s my understanding that kit has stressed skin technology. I’d love to see that.

There’s no such thing as hijack in my thread, all discussion is welcome. That’s the whole purpose for it.

Thanks for the info about the hatches, Airfix molded them on top, so I assume they were supposed to be that way. I can live with it the way it is.

Good luck in finding the lights. Sounds like a cool idea.

In fact, does anyone know if there are LED lights that can project a spotlight from a scale height of 571mm and that will fit into a large fuselage along with wiring?

working on a dead reckoning of a 18ft diameter circle of light from the centre from 60 feet, that is, in 1/32, 171.45mm or 6.75 in.

I thought the Lancaster is a single-pilot airplane. Am I incorrect?

The BBMF Lancaster had a second set of controls added. Operational birds were single pilot.

Yep, what Phil said. All to do with modern flight regulations. You will notice the second set of controls are connected directly to the original set. They could be operated from the folding fligt engineers seat next to the pilot.

Nice to see you working in a proper scale for a change Wink

Off to a nice start, look forward to seeing more of this. Bit late now, but just for future referance, everything under glass that can be seen from the outside is black.

Pit of the BBMF Lanc.

And ye, they are rather large.

"These turkeys must have been huge.  Even in this scale the wingspan is over 17 inches."

Basicaly the same size as a B-17; 5' shorter in length and ~2' shorter in wingspan.  Same top speed but the Lancaster could carry the 11 ton 'Grand Slam' bomb becuse of length of bomb bay and design.

Your kit is coming along nicely.  So far, with the way the engines will get installed, it looks exactly like the B.II version I built (Bristol Hercules engines instead of RR Merlins).  The kit decals I used were really nice and went on without any silvering.

Nice work.  Keep it up.

Thanks Murph.

Looking great! And a second vote for the Optivisor. I even use the Optivisor on 1/48- if things look "ok" with the optivisor, they will look really good with bare eyesight!

Thanks! Maybe I should look into one as I age.

Nice choice on your first 1/72 kit. And a very nice start. I'm building this one:

The only problem I had was with the bomb bay doors. Mine seemed to be warped, but eventually were coaxed into place.

You might want to check out the Airfix Group Build thread. I have more pics of mine there, plus I think you're still able to join up!

Good luck.

Cary

Thanks Cary...and thanks for the heads up. I don’t think this one gets the conventional bombay due to the Upkeep modification so I’m lucky there.

Send me the link to your build. I’d love to see it.
