This revell kit is a rebox of the Eduard so it is a really nice kit indeed. The cammel I am building now is an ancient rebox of what I think is a Aurora kit, there is still the slightest hint of a raised roundal on the upper RH wing. The detail is also way less than the "eduard/revell" kit.
I an looking for a 1/48 Spad 13 or Nieuport 17 flown by an American to add to my 1/48 WW1 collection. I already have a Nieport 11 of France, Fokker D7 and Albat DV, Fokker D VIII and now the camel.

You did a very nice job on this. I love the Albetros, I really need to add one to the collection. Rigging scares me plain and simple, but I have to try new things to get better at what I do. Your work inspires me, so don't beat yourself up over the kit. I can't see anything wrong, it looks great.

A lot !! And I mean A LOT!!

The build itself was not the issue. I managed to mess up the rigging. I wanted to simulate the brass turnbuckles with PVA glue and it went miserably wrong, I also rdilled the holes for the rigging to big but now I know for the next one.
On 1/72 models I actually use bristles from a large house paint brush cut to exact size and glued on with cyno for rigging. This works well for me as access to the model in small scale sometimes can be hard.
I will soon rig my 1/48 Cammel and will still see what tecnique I will use on it.
Don't give yourself such a hard time. That's a solid build, and that simulated shadow just blew my mind a bit. I will definitely be putting that in my pocket for later. =] I've been dragging my feet to put together two different biwings and now I'm glad I did.
What are your thougts about troubleshooting the rigging at this scale?

Looks great. The Albatross is my favorite WW1 plane. I've built a couple myself, one 1/72 and a 1/48 both Eduard kits

Very nice work.
Great build! I'm learning a lot here.

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.
TheunsI undersand that WW1 wheels were not black but light grey...
Quite possable, natural rubber is grey.
TheunsNot the best build I have done but such is life, cant win them all :-)
I know you know your build Theuns but it looks great in the completed pics. I love the wood.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

This model has irritated me enough to actually get done today LOL

Thanx for the compliments, I always try to learn something new on each build, sometimes it works and sometimes I fail badly but that's life :-)
I have the interplane and cabane struts glued to the tp wing now, I used thin CA glue as the model cement took to long to cure, Now I need to trim the struts to fit the fuselage.
Pix to follow
The bane of Bi-plane builds for sure, I've always done the Cabanes first but every build is different. I know You 'll get it sorted tho

Amazing work. Im fascinated with the wood grain. When I learnt to woodgrain as part of my trade many years ago we used the same basic method of a base with a oil or universal tinter applied over the top but Ive always used a torn piece of foam to apply the grain. Ill have to experiment with your brushing technique.
Your shading was very convincing as well. Its a completely different mindset that you're painting not just a colour but light reflection and its difficult to do well. You sir, seem to have mastered it!

I have run into the forst issue with this build, trying to put the top wing on.
The plans show to glue on the interplane struts to the top wing, put this assembly onto the fuselage and then fit the cabane struts....needless to sya this did not work for me.
The cabane struts do not fit into the locator holes so I will have to re think this proccess.
This is where arifix new tool bi planes are cool, the struts have self alligning braces that are removed after the wings are in place.
I am starting to worry about the WNW Se5 now :-(
Rigging is not so bad, I just take it as one line at a time untill its done LOL
Looks great Theuns, good luck with the rigging, makes my toes curl just thinking about that task
Looking good!

I got the decals on and then the satin clearcoat, quite happy with the results.
Next the rigging starts...that will be fun

Came out great , the pin wash really made it pop! I've been using Mr color superclear over oils with no issues
Thanx, I had a hard time to get the clearcoat acrylic to stick to the paint, the oils must have had some adverse effect causing it to fisheye, but I basically flooded the whole model with clearcoat and rotated it untill it was touch dry.
Then I did a pin wash.came out OK

"Can you fly this plane and land it?...Surely you can't be serious....I am serious, and don't call me Shirley"
Looking great Theuns, oils are great for this but agree its a long dry time. The effect you get is worth it tho
I learned to use oils over enamel when trying my hand at figure painting. They do take a long time to dry. And the trick as I was told was to put on the oils, take most of it off and blend. I really like oils for leather and some car interiors. They have a nice natural sheen. Looks like you've got the hang of it for sure!
Thanks,
I have used a few new tecniques on this model like oil paints blended into the model paint to create shadow, like on the rib tapes.

The wood and cowl is basically completed, I need to now do the little metal pannels and do a clearcoat for pinwash and decals.

Thanx, I used the decal for top wing as a guide to cut a paper mask. Then lifted the mask about 1/4" off the surface and at very low pressure sprayed on the grey to look like a shadow.
Now that is an impressive piece of detail!
Theuns Thanx I airbrushed on the "shadow" that the black cross ontop of the wing would show on the bottom fabric. IMG_20190811_163116 by Theunis van Vuuren, on Flickr Theuns

Serious trick of the eyes to make that look translucent. I'd have not thought of that!
- Mike Brindos "Lost Boy"
I have started with the ply effect on the outside of the fuselage. I got some brown, white, yellow and reddish oil paints from my artist neighbour. Thses I am mixing to show different pannels . It just takes very long for the oils to dry enough to mask over it. Atleast a few days but I am happy with the results
Excellent! Thats a detail often missed by Modellers, nice attention to detail Theuns
