Outstanding pit work Nikola. It’s coming along nicely.

Hi guys,

She's all closed up and waiting for me to come back from snowboarding holiday :)

From the dry fit test, I saw that there is going to be a serious war between me and the canopies.

Thanks for looking!

Happy 2020 to all!

Best wishes

Nikola

Hi guys,

An update on the widow after an almost three week break.

I did my best on fitting the canopies (even using white glue as a filler) and as you can see, the results are not great. As everyone has said before, they have a terrible, terrible fit (some of the clear parts are even missing "mullions" (don't know the right word :))), but I decided not to worry about it and waste too much time on correcting that. Instead, I will make tarps from a Kleenex and water/white glue mixture, cover the problematic parts, paint the tarps and "das is it".

I thought about building up the cockpit sides to raise the canopy as some of the guys have done and suggested, but I have to admit that I was lazy to do it since I have very little free time and that would prolong the whole process, so I was impatient and decided to go the route of less resistance, or to call it the "cheat route" :)

Maybe if there was a problem with only one canopy I would have put some effort, but since every piece had at least one problem, I just decided not to bother with them much. :)

I will also leave all the openable parts of the canopies open of course, since the dry fit showed an impossible task to make it look OK. This will also show some of the interior which I put effort in. :)

Cleaning up and fitting the rest of the parts was a time consuming task, but not as bad as the canopies. :)

Still got a little sanding and filling to do, and then on to masking and priming.

Thanks for looking guys!

Cheers,

Nikola

Nikola,

Thanks for tackling this project.  I think you're doing a fine job.  Smile

I recently broke mine out and began cleaning up the parts for preassembly.  It's a 2012 version, so it's got some work.  I received this as a present a few years ago, and although I thanked them heartily, I kinda looked upon it as having gotten a Fruit Cake for Christmas.  A lot of work for little reward.  Well, we'll see how she goes!

Good luck on your continued endeavor!

Gary

PS> I can see the images just fine.

I signed on to say thank you for posting this work in progress. I have recently starting building again and this was a kit I remember quite well from my younger days. I used to stare at it all the time at the store and one day finally aquired it. I did my best but as a kid with limited skill, I was never really happy with how it turned out. Now, seeing how difficult some of those canopy fits are, I realize it may not have been entirely my fault, lol. Anyways, it is a kit that is sitting in the renewed stash I have been building over the past year and I look forward to seeing your approach to navigating the poor fitting parts.

Have you thought about vacuforming the canopies? It’s not too difficult to do, but the complex shapes might make it a little more difficult.

Hi Gary,

You said it man, a lot of work on this one! :)

The subject is what keeps me going, as I love this aircraft. :) When you get over the kit quality and forget great expectations (speaking for myself and my average skill level), it's actually very fun to build, but one really needs patience which I often lack these days having two little kids, haha. I kind of see it as fun practice. We'll see how she turns out in the end.

I recently oredered two of Hobby Boss's 1/72 widows with which I expect no trouble and just fun :)

Thanks for the encouragement! :)

Good luck to you as well! Looking forward to seeing your work!

Nikola

Hi Brynn,

So far I only heard of vacuforming and have no idea how it works. It sounded complicated to me. :)

Now that you mention it, I will research it a bit and maybe try it on future builds if needed.

Thanks for the tip!

Nikola

Hi Hoss,

Yes, it has a lot of fit issues. No wonder why it became a notorious kit. Very fun subject to build though. :)

Thanks for the encouragement! :)

I finished all of the filling and sanding work, so now off to priming. Yay! :)

Oh Boy;

Now I know why when I had my Vac-U-Form by Mattel everyone wanted canopies. I have built that kit twice in the original Black Moldings. I don't remember that drastic a set of fit issues. It's almost as if the clear plastic shrunk catostrophicly!

 Why? Who knows?

Hi guys,

Priming and complementary pre-shading finished:

1. Primer - Vallejo German Dark Yellow Surface Primer 73.604

2. Complementary pre-shading - Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red (and darker shade of it made by mixing with XF-1 Flat Black) and X-16 Purple.

3. Highlights - Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan

Next step: Base colors - Tamiya XF-62 Olive Drab and XF-53 Neutral Gray.

Thanks for looking.

Hi gents,

Here she is with the first set of thin coats of base color (Tamiya's XF-62 Olive Drab) over the complementary pre-shading scheme.

I think that the color variation should be subtler so I might go with a couple of more thin coats of OD or go straight to filters and do it that way.

I will decide on that when I see the model tomorrow in daylight. :)

Apologies for the image quality.

Thanks for looking!

Hi gents,

Update on the Widow:

She received a second set of very thin coats (85%, thinner) this time those being Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow. I chose to lighten the OD with a yellow since OD is actually a mixture of yellow and black.

The first couple of photos are taken outside in daylight and the rest is from the study. This is as close as I could get to showing what I actually see in reality without taking fancy photos. :)

The effect of complementary pre-shading is subtle, but I think that it does add richness to the color scheme of the model.

Criticism and comments are more than welcome!

Again, thanks for looking!

Cheers,

Nikola

Very good.  The sunlight brings out the shading very well.

I'm learning a lot from this about using different colors for pre shading. I guess it's not just black anymore

Hi Tempestjohnny,

Thanks a lot! I am glad that you find my method interesting. Appreciated!

I think that it opens up a lot of possibilities for interesting color interplay, but one should be careful and keep it subtle so it doesn't look unrealistic.

It looks like you're beating that bad boy into submission. I like the tarp idea. Great solution. Certainly better than ripping all the hair out of your head trying to get that fit.

Yes and the big O² bottle on the other side was yellow.

Also, on the starboard side panel details you painted the in-flight O² supply hoses for each crew position silver,  when in fact they were actually flat green.

This post continues to be a trip down memory lane for me, as I remember building this kit when it was in the Monogram box, and being very much daunted by the glossy, four-page Shep Payne diorama included in the box.

I remember skipping the red decals and simply painting the upper surfaces red and masking off the red stripes on one of the all black-versions.  That would be about 1980, before we had chipping medium, AM accessories, and the like.

Hi CapnMac,

Glad it brings good old memories to you. It really is a timetravel kit, haha :)
