Thank you John! The only dumb question is the one not asked. I gloss the entire model.  I do this so that I can have a good consistent finish when I apply my final dull coat. Also, a nice gloss coat also helps if you want to apply a panel liner or wash.  Beer

The key is a good solid gloss coat. When you apply the decal over a gloss finish the decal lays down smoothly and minimizes the opportunity for any air to be trapped under the decal.

You have some serious skills, that build is wonderful!

Stupid question probably, but do you gloss coat the entire model, or just the areas where the decal will be positioned?  I've seen reference to both methods, and quite frankly, I've not had good results using the area only approach.  But that may be because I am glossing over a dullcote?

Thanks,

John

Thank you both for your kind words!

Jazz - The two techniques I experimented with were, first, using filters to give slight paint variations and second, paint chipping.  After I did my basic weathering, I applied a gloss coat. Before I applied the decals I applied the filter to the fuselage. The filter was made up of 95% Oderless Turpenoid Thinner and 5% Winsor & Newton blue oil paint.  In the photo below, if you look carefully, you can see very slight variations in the blue paint color around certain panels under the fuselage. The idea here is to give it a very slight tint which could mimic some natural variations in the finish. The filter needs to be applied over a gloss coat for best results.  After all my wheathering was complete, I took an 18/0 brush and stippled the chipping around the fuselage.  I used Vallejo Model Color's German Black/Brown for the areas under the fuselage and I used Model Air Aluminum for the dark areas on top of the fuselage. The paint needs to be thinned to a ratio of 50/50 to get a nice subtle effect.

Great job. What new techniques did you try out? - I just posted a photo of my progress on an Fw190 and would love to make mine look better - I might not reach your level though!

Awesome!  Excellent job on that Würger!  Your chips and scratches turned out very well. Wonderful paint job overall. Beautiful. Congrats.

That's one of my absolute favorite FW 190 schemes. There's a cool sequence of photos of black 13 where the pilots are playing chesss when an alert is sounded and everyone dashes to their planes. I just added the PCM 1/32 kit to my stash and plan on tackling it after my Spitfire.

Thank you Hoss!  I will have to look up those photos online. I'd love to see them!

Here are a couple I tracked down on the internet.

Cheers

You really nailed it. That might be the best drybrushing work I've seen. Your attention to detail is first class and the overall finish is fanastic, Chad

I concur. That chipping is spot on and not overdone. How did you do that? Silver pencil? I have this kit and I should give it a go one of these days.

Beautiful work Chad.

Thank you very much! The chipping was done with Vallejo Model Color thinned by a ratio of 1:1 with their thinner and stipple on with an 18/0 brush. I have natural shaking in my right hand so this is one technique where that actually comes in handy!

Very well done, Chad.  That's right, it makes me want to build one, but at the moment I'm in a Japanese frame of mind.

Thanks John!  The key is a good solid gloss coat. When you apply the decal over a gloss finish the decal lays down smoothly and minimizes the opportunity for any air to be trapped under the decal. Trapped air is what causes the silvering. After the decal settles I lightly rub a moist Q-tip over it to squeeze out any trapped air pockets.  Make sure you give your decal a good 15 minutes to settle before you do this. Next, I apply some MicroSol to "melt" the decal to the gloss surface.  When everything looks good, I shoot a layer of matt finish over the entire kit.

Thanks.  I am not really waiting before "blotting" to try to push out all the water.  I'll give that a try!

I managed to miss this too, somehow.

This is one of my favorite 190 schemes, never been brave enough to try it. Guess I'm intimidated by the big black decals.

Great job.  Can I ask how you applied the decals?  I have some trouble with those smaller ones and the walkway dashes as I always seem to get some silvering.  Thanks.
