Hey Joe, another beauty from your assembly li.... I mean work bench. Your builds have such a nice style, it's no wonder you have people asking you to build them to display.

Going to put on my tinfoil hat for a moment here... what if Airfix let the stock of their Hurricane get so low, then come out with a special commemorative boxing for the 80th Anniversary of the BoB? Just a thought from my deranged, quarantined brain!

Thanks Max. I would be all over it if they did. They make a pretty nice Spitfire Mark I too!

Hi Lawdog,

Absolutely brilliant Hurricane! I love the colours and your perfect paint finish! The little dio complements it very nicely as well. Great work!

One comment if I may - IMHO and from my very limited experience, the colour variation on the green could be slightly subtler, and you could have varied the intensity and color of panel line washes, but it's just my opinion and my style. Might be the lighting in the photos as well so...

Thanks Nikola, I appreciate the critique. Actually the green is correct for this time period. Tamiya makes this color, XF-81, which is what I used. I have the AK RAF Green which I though was actually too green so I used the Tamiya instead. The panel line washes were done with AK Interactive panel line washes. The one I used on the upper was designed for brown green camo. If anything I think it's too subtle. I appreciate the kind words.

Yeah, their original new tool MK I is as rare as hens teeth nowadays. I caught your original build last year and this one is just as great!

What did you use for final flat/satin coat on this one?

Thanks Hoss. I still use ye ole Testors dull coat mixed with lacquer thinner. I hear Testors is going out of business, so I have to find another option.

1/48 Airfix Hurricane Mk. I Battle of Britain (501 Squadron)

As I continue with my tribute to "The Few" on the upcoming 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of Britain, I figured I'd share what I have dubbed the"Broken Record Hurricane". This is the third time I've been asked to build 501 Squadron Ken Mackenzie's Hurricane, serial number V6799, which I built along with the Spitfire. Not that I'm complaining and granted they all look essentially the same, I believe it's the story of this machine and pilot that enthusiasts find so interesting. On October 7th, 1940, Mackenzie ran out of ammunition so he used his wingtip to knock the tail plane off a Bf 109 sending it plummeting. He then managed to land the stricken Hurricane with a damaged wing, earning the nickname "Super Mack". Mackenzie would score 11.5 before being shot down and POW'ed himself in 1941. I read that he spent most of his time trying to escape and even managed to convince his captors that he was crazy, so he was released on 1944!.

The Airfix Mk. I is quite good, but the original boxing is getting hard to find for some reason. I had to use their Sea Hurricane Mk. I kit which fortunately had the original Mk. I parts in it. I used a few extras such as resin exhausts and wheels, photoetch seatbelts, and the markings were painted with Montex masks.

That's about it.
