Finished:
Fictional F-19 Stealth Fighter with an equally fictional digital camouflage scheme.
I designed and printed intentionally translucent decals for the camo to allow some of the pre-shading to show through.
Otherwise it's built straight out of the box.  Testors 1/72nd scale kit.

Thanks!  It was an entertaining project even with a couple redos from changing my mind.

Wow!

That bird is looking super!

What a great take on a datedly "future" design.

Congrats on not only a great idea, but great persistence in execution!

A coat of flat clear helped quite a bit.  It might get some mild weathering later, or not…

I sprayed the wheel wells white and gave them a wash of light gray.

Thanks!  I am having fun with it.

I built the cockpit as it comes.  Looks like it could be detailed up nicely, but since the canopy will be closed I'm good with this level of detail.

What a fun project.  Looks great.  The digital camo is very cool

Thanks,

John

I thought the black insignia was too low-vis when I applied it, but after a couple days I decided it had to come off.  Since I planned to use the gray markings on the tails I went with the same for the wing.  Ironically, it's just the other side of the same coin of contrast.

I did the same to the leading edges of the tails…

I did a little freehand shading around the perimeter.

My 2 cents. I think the light grey decal looks better. The darker one has a definite "WOW" factor but the lighter one is more like an almost invisible theme IMO.

I'm impressed. I've loved this kit since I was a kid in college. Still have a 1/48th scale one with an old PE set made for it. That and the 'Stingbat" stealth attack helicopter are a couple of the neater kits produced. Revell's B2 Stealth bomber and the Testors SR-71 replacement are other futuristic kits I own.

I painted my original F-19 in all black in the 1980s, but when I built it again, it'll be in the "Air Superiority" gray scheme the directions also give.

They are fun.  I need to see if I have that Stingbat.  I have the Revell F-19 and the X-30 on hand after this one is done.  Still contemplating paint schemes for them.  The Sea Shadow is in the queue too, but it's a real subject as opposed to these fantasy kits.

Pawel

Hello!

Maybe it's the lighting, but I liked the first one better...

Say - do you print your own decals? What does the process look like? And how did you get at the shape needed to cover that hull? Did you use any decal solvents here? Thanks in advance for the info and good luck with your build

Paweł

Yes, I print my own decals and create the artwork too.  I am the artist for Scale-Master Decals.

I used a little Gunze solvent on a couple edges to help them wrap, but they fit like I designed them to.

Hello!

I'd say it takes a lot of dedication to remove such nice looking decals as these were! Putting down such a bid decal takes a lot of skill, too!

The F-19 has a very special place in my heart - I have flown it many times in the nineties, over Europe, Persian Gulf and Northern Soviet Union - in the Microprose simulator, of course! :-)

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

I removed the decals and repainted the plane with Sky Grey and German Gray.  I thought a bit of a skunk stripe down the center was appropriate…

After putting a couple decals on I realized the contrast between the grays wasn't as much as I hoped.

Sorry to hear that, Mark.  There are a number of books in my library with his name attached in one way or another.

That's going to look pretty cool.  So Lloyd Jones is your father?  Thats a well known name in modeling!

Thanks (all), it's just a fun side project.
Yes, I'm proud to say he's my father, sadly he passed last year.
(For a short recap of a small part of what he did for the hobby check out the previous issue of FSM.)

The F-19 kits first started to show up when it was announced that a real stelth fighter was going into production.  At the time, nobody had any idea what it looked like so someone took a guess and the F-19 kit appeared.  The Testors kit hit the market and I believe a lot of kits were sold.  Soon a almost identical kit showed up in Japan from ARII and maybe a couple other kits.  Soon we had kits in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.

When the real stelth aircraft appeared during Desert Storm, sales of the F-19 dropped and production stopped.

I started looking at these kits and had a idea for something else.  I made one with certain modifications and additions and turned it into a high speed attack skimmer with two engines and a large laser cannon mounted under the fusejage.  It also had a ski type landing gear and a few other differences.  It ended up taking third place in its catagory at the IPMS Nationals that were held here in Orlando back in the 90s.  Since then I also did one as a railroad maint skimmer for the Aroostock train system and this one was equipped with exterior engines that looked strangely like A-10 engines, had two side seats, and carried a assortment of repair parts, tools, and other things.
