1/48 Tamiya Bf 109G-6, Fw. Heinrich Bartels, 11./JG 27, Kalamaki, Greece, November 1943 (Complete)

It's time to model Heinrich Bartel's Bf 109G-6 based in Greece in November 1943. Rot dreizehn is a pretty snappy scheme that I've wanted to do for a while. White trim, red markings, spinner spiral and sawtooth Erla wing camo -- what's not to like? I'll also be posting in the Messerschmitt Group Build thread.

There are quite a few photos of this plane on the web, including this one in flight.

Heinrich Bartels was a 99-victory ace. Here he is after tallying his 70th victory, which was one of four P-38's he shot down on November 15, 1943.

I'm using Tamiya's 1/48 kit with aftermarket decals. I'll be using a few aftermarket goodies including the guns. The main paints will be Mr. Color lacquers.

The office is complete.

The interior work on the engine compartment is complete as well as the insides of the interchangable covers.

I'll show more of the interior during the final photos. I masked up the engine for painting before I thought to take some pics.

The main build is complete. Here it is primed and with the RLM 76 down. Wings next.

The main painting is now complete. I used paper cut out masks for the wing camo and I think it came out pretty well. The interchangable and removable covers are also complete. I painted the spinner because the decal didn't quite match my reference photos. Gloss coat and decals are next.

Great work, Hoss - I like the different, non-splinter, camo scheme.  How did you paint the spinner - I'm thinking along the lines of a spiral-cut mask, maybe?

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?

Thanks Hutch. I first painted the spinner white and then masked with 2mm Tamiya flexible tape. Then a light coat of black. A little touch up was needed but not too much. Thanks.

I'd love to know how you cut the mask for the spinner

Hi tempest - I used 2mm wide Tamiya flexible tape and cut a taper starting at about 2cm from the end. I needed to do a little clean up after spraying the black but it was minor. Thanks.

I can tell there's a lot of work put in that spinner.

My rendition of Rot Dreizehn is now complete. Since the last update, gloss coat and decals, weathering and flat coat were applied along with the final doodads to finish the build.

I tried Mr. Color GX100 Super Clear for the gloss coat thinned 1:2 with Mr. Color Leveling thinner and really liked it. It dried instantly and was great for the decals and washes, etc.

Eagle Cal decals were used along with some of the kit decals for various markings and I wasn't 100% happy. They dried with a rough surface texture that I needed to coat and sand down a bit. It may have been that they were about 20 years old but not sure.

I used my typical Flory dark dirt wash for panel lines and used quite a few pastels and pigments for dust and dirt.

I used a 1:1 mix of Alclad Matte and Flat to give a sheen a bit more than dead flat and probably applied too much because it took a while to dry.

Photos showed that the back side of the props were heavily worn but the rest of the machine was well maintained with a nominal amount of dust and dirt, but not alot of chipping and scratching. So that's what I tried to capture.

Overall, it was a fun kit to build. It's a little more complex and robust than the Eduard Gustav, of which I've built several. Eduard gets the edge in exterior detail but the engine in the Tamiya kit is a nice touch. Add-ons included guns and cannons for the pods and of course the decals.

Enjoy the photos and thanks for looking!

Spectacular work. Intrigued by the GX100 quick curing time. I may have to give that a try.

Thanks again for the comments. It turns out that this model won third place in the 1/48 axis inline category at US IPMS Nationals in Omaha last week. Thanks again.
