Outstanding!  Besides the pencils what other technique was used for chipping?  I ask because I like hairspray chipping but I'm concerned about tape pulling up paint when I spray the upper wing insignia.

I have to say that this masterpiece is just beyond magnificent. Not only are you a model builder but an artist and a first rate researcher in respect to detailed modeling. It really can't get much better than this.

Those images are far above inspiring. Please keep the pictures up on this thread because I am bookmarking it for future reference.

I look foward to your next subject adventure as I assume you will somehow manage to top this.

Thank you for such an informative thread.  The paint formulas you posted help a lot.  Fantastic work!

My rendition of Pappy Boyington's 883 is now complete.

Tamiya really did a super job on this beast. It really looks the part.

The Fundekals went on with no problem although the Tamiya stencils were a little thick as usual.

After decals and another gloss coat, a Flory wash was applied to panel lines along with brown/black post-shading and exhaust staining.

For some extra weathering, a couple of rounds of salt fading were applied to the upper surfaces and the prop.  This was a first for me but I like the results. It's subtle from far away but very noticable up close.

The Fundekals profile highlights the unique rigging on #883, which has a line attached to a post on the pitot tube. I scratch built the post and rigged the line with some brass tubing.

After looking at the photos, I realize I forgot to removing the masks on the small windows in the wings. There certainly a lot of masked clear parts on the wings on this kit.

Along with the AK weathering effects and silver/primer chipping, colored pencils were used for some additional chips and scratches.

The photos of 883 show some major fuel staining forward of the cockpit and it took three tries to get the effect the way I wanted it, using airbrush and thinned brushed acrylics.

Apparently this plane was only a few weeks old in December 1943. The Fundecals instructions has an interesting photos showing a lineup of Corsairs with finishes from brand spankin' new to several months old. I tried to estimate what 2-4 weeks of weathering and fading would look like along with trying to match the tones in the photos.

The wings are definitely darker that the tops of the fuselage for the darkest sea blue color. Mr. Color GX flat clear was applied as the final coat.

The cockpit shows well on this kit.

The IP is also reasonably visible.

The Barracuda cockpit decals add quite a bit and nicely visible when finished.

The time spent adding the wiring to the engine pays off - also visible.

Overall, a very enjoyable kit to build. Thanks for looking. Comments on critiques always welcome.

The main camo painting is now complete. My understanding is that this airframe was only a few weeks old in December 1943, so I'm looking to create a finish that's not new but not beat to hell either.  There's an interesting photo in the fundekals guide that shows a linup of VMF-214 corsairs including machines ranging from brand spankin' new to several months old.

I created a color palette of various tones of both intermediate blue (IB) and sea blue (SB) ranging from 4:1 to 1:1 (blue:white) to reflect the fading of the various colors and areas of the airframe shown in photos.

The wing and stabilizer tops were painted a base of 3:1 for the metal areas and 2:1 for the fabric zones. The cowling was painted much lighter, with a base of 1:1 for both the SB and IB. The fuselage was a base of 2:1 for both SB and IB, with the rudder ~1:1 IB. Various panels were faded and shaded to reflect photos.

The undersides of the wings were painted straight IB with 3:1 applied to the fabric areas. I figured less sun fading would have occured underneath.

After painting the walkways, a gloss coat was applied with Mr. Color GX100.

Ready for decals. Thanks for looking.

Outstanding work. I did the Birdcage of this kit, but damn, looking at what you are producing with the 1A, I'd like to do that one as well.

Thanks Aggieman. I say go for the 1A too. I have the birdcage in the stash and may have to build that one sooner rather than later.

I've been making slow progress and finally finished the main build.

Painting has started. Silver was sprayed on the high-traffic areas on the wings, followed by AK worn effects fluid, then by yellow chromate primer.

After some wear to show the chipping effect, a gloss coat was applied, followed by another layer of AK worn effects.  This plane was actually fairly new in December 1943 -- although I'll depict a modest amount of paint fading due to sun and salt, the chipping and wear on the wings was relatively light per photos.

Panel line preshading and some shading variation was added with scotch brite templates.

After some careful review of photos to assess paint colors and wear effects, I decided to go with MRP paints for the main camo colors.  The MRP colors I think are a good match for the excellent color photos provided in the fundekals profile -- much better than the Mr. Color paints. The variation of the sea blue and intermediate blue across different airframes as they weathered the sun, sand and salt is amazing. I created a color palette with various percentages of white added to base color to match the photos.

The insignia white underside was painted first, followed by the wing undersides in intermediate blue.

Painting continues.

Nikola

If you close up that beautiful engine I will sue you for crime against beautiful detail work. Big Smile

Are you leaving the cowlings open?

Best,

Nikola

Thanks Nikola. I plan to leave the covers unglued so I can display it open or closed. Making slow progress.

If you hadn’t put your engine on a paint jar, I would have taken it for your reference photo.  Beautiful job.

Thanks knox.  Glad you like it.

Amazing work on the engine, Hoss!

Big Jim, here's a link that shows what Flory wash is.  I also use the stuff almost exclusively because its so safe to use, and looks fantastic.

Yeah man you did an excellent job building the engine.  I'm currently working that assembly and struggling getting the wiring right.  yours looks perfect!  I believe the kit has removable cowling pieces  so you can show the detail.   It would be a crime not to show some of that stunning craftsmanship on the finished model.

Thanks wpwar--  I'm planning to leave the engine covers unglued so I can display it either way. The wiring certainly makes it pop from the front. Thanks.
