Tamiya Messerschmitt Bf109E4/7 1/48

My latest build is one half of a two-fer of essentially the same kit, Tamiya's 1/48 Bf109E4/7.  I've had this one in my stash for more than a decade, but only recently grabbed the E3 variant when I came across it in a shop in Plano, Texas.

Paints are largely Vallejo's RLM04, RLM65, RLM74, and RLM75, with detail colors coming from Tamiya, AK Interactive Xtreme Metals, and Model Master.  I did not build this out of the box, electing to add a cockpit detail set from Quinta Studios and brass gun barrels from Master.  I also used a Montex Mini-Mask set for the canopy.

Construction was problem-free, with only a tiny bit of filler needed along a portion of one wing root.  The decals for this kit were largely garbage.  All of the Balkenkreuses split in various places, but I was able to recover enough to get them into position.  This was supposed to be White-12, but I was not able to recover those markings after they essentially disintegrated upon removing from the paper backing.  There should also have been red wing-walks but those too were problematic.  I've never had a problem like this with Tamiya's decals, but it's likely the age of the sheet even though the sheet was stored for years inside a folder in an interior closet of my house.

Weathering was a combination of ground pastels, Flory dark dirt wash, and a custom blend of Vallejo paints (black, grey, and brown) for the exhaust stains.

Next up, I'm going big with Trumpeter's 1/32 P-47D Thunderbolt.

Beautiful finish.  I may have those decals as I did that  kit a couple years ago and used AM decals.  I'll  poke around.

Thanks,

John

Really nice job, especially the weathering. Never get tired of looking at a well done 109.
