Japanese Floatplane
Posted by Graymodeler on Saturday, April 7, 2007 6:04 PM

I did a search on the forum and have not seen this model in a while.  I wanted to build some kind of floatplane after watching Harrison Ford in the "Seven days and Seven nights?" movie with my wife for the umteenth time.  I got the old Jake and the Aichi E16A1 Zuiun and got busy and they are at the same state of completion at this time.  Here is the Zuiun from Yokuska naval base where I was once homebased.

Hi again, I have finally completed both Japanese floatplanes.  The first one I displayed was the Fujimi "Paul" and the other one I am presenting is the Hasagawa "Jake."  The Paul was to replace the Jake but the war ended.  Both kits are in 1/72 scale.  Greg

Very nice work! Very clean.

And my condolences to you for having to sit through that most dreadful of "chick flicks" yet again. That must have been more painful than dropping an X-acto knife with a new #11 blade on your foot.

Nice work, graymodeler.  Those seaplanes are nice subjects, especially with the catapult.  Thanks for sharing.  I like how you did the wear on the Jake's paint.

Well, thanks guys.  I am glad we have a forum to share our models.  Modelnerd, anything to make my lovely wife happy.  Actually Anne Heche starts looking pretty good after a few days on a deserted island!  Laugh [(-D]

John, I used Tamiya acryls on these models.  It has a very fine grain and touches up very easily.  I put the silver on first, then the IJN gray, then the green.  I mixed the gray and green in a ratio of 1 to 3 to lighten the paint.  I then scraped away the green along the panel lines with a knife.  A little sanding with fine paper and a clear dull coat ties it together.  Don't forget some brown and yellow powder too.  Some of the markings were masked and sprayed. Greg

gorgeous work, if i'm allowed to use that word in this context. i, too, am interested in nippon's floating dragons and am despairing of how to do the yellow leading edge on the  beasts. i've thought of cutting yellow decal sheet but haven't found any and masking the edges of a 1/144 LS emily is the lonely domaim of the ascetic with no arthritis. any suggestions?

very very nice looking floaters......as a big fan of floatplanes I appreciate the work you have put into these...very clean builds...I would like to see 1/48 of these....the only 48 Jake I have ever seen has been the Nichimo kit and thats a joke...Hasegawa should put it out in 48.

Keep up the great work...would like to see more pics of the Jake.

Nicely done Greymodeller on both builds Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup].  I recently picked up Tamiya's Aichi M6A1 Seiran (1/72 scale) so I enjoyed seeing your builds and will use them as a source of inspiration.

I did find one more picture on my Photobucket of the Jake on the catapult.  I think the Paul is a better looking aircraft, but the Jake looks like it would be easier to fly with the larger wing.

The Yellow recognition bands on the wing were painted with enamel (yellow with a little red mixed in). I masked them with a little blue tape that I had cut into narrow strips.  Just keep it parallel with the leading edge or a little wider inboard.  Spray lightly with about 8 to 10 pounds on the regulator.

looks like some detail on your catapult that exceeds the kit, any suggestions or pics on making them look more naval than the ceiling of the school gym?
