He-177 Progress
Posted by carsanab on Thursday, May 24, 2007 7:51 PM

Hey All:

Just wanted to share with all of you my progress on an He-177 I'm building for our Luft Bombers GB. Which of course you are all invited to join or just stop by and peek in on some great looking builds.

Its been a tough ride so far, the kit has many fit issues but I think I'm past those now, great pit with lots of detail since its the Hitech MPM kit. had lots of fun with the pit.

Feedback is as always well appreciated!

Thanks

Looking good so far.  Some close-up pics of the pit would be nice.

Bow [bow]

"Holy Cow"!...was the lasting initial thought. What an outstanidng cockpit...no wonder this build is taking some time, but well worth it. So far, this kit, as tough as it's been, it your crowning acheivement!

Not only is it massive, but it's detailed.

Top notch, carsanab!

Nice work so far. I have always wanted to build the He 177. I have the old 1/72 MPC kit from the sixties that does not look to bad. I thought about snagging one of the 1/48 MPM kits but the price and a sneaking suspicion that it was no slap together kit has kept it out of my stash. If you do not mind what areas of the kit gave you the most trouble. I can see from the pictures a decent amount of filler on the top of the fuselage. Overall how would you rate it. I just do  not like spending six months on one build. There are way to many must build projects on my shelves now so I try to keep moving alone and not get tied up on one project because I start to lose interest in it. Especially when it seems like there is no end in sight and you are making no progress.

Well Crusher...the kit ir pricey...I said what the heck because it is a limited run and a great looking bird. Now the kit is extensive in size. If you get it spend extra and get the HiTech. It gives you lots of PE and resin for the pit. The pit was a joy to build lots and lots of detail. I noticed that the parts the resin replaced were very thick molded and looked almost toylike So the resulting pit is very nice. Now the rest of the kit is good dont get me wrong but not as crisp. Fit was the biggest problem. No locater pins and parts that are again thick. Trailing edges are very thick and formed gaps. I guess good thing is the plastic is soft. The fuselage had a deformed top...not much but it dipped in a bit even with the bulkheads the came with the central gunners position, Still I guess I could have added some extra ones now that I think of it that might have helped. Wing conex were tough too. Big gaps and the spars are too short and dont fit the slots in the fuselage.  Iam now working on the gear and again it seems a bit thickly molded...i guess when im done I will decide on that.

Overal its a very nice build and Im sure the finished plane will be impressive if not in my technique at least in size..she's huge. but for sure this kit is not for a beginner.

Hope it helps but dont shy away...Ive seen your work too...you can more than handle it.

Thanks for the reply Carlos. I have only build two limited run kits in the last year. One was the Classic Airframes Cr 42. Both were a challenge because of the lack of locating pins or even worse no wing spars or slots to attach the wings. the other was a 1/72  Sm 84 by AV USK. I found that I was capable of building these difficult kits but they were so time consuming having to make wing spares locating tabs and bulkheads from scratch I feel very non productive. I have so many other builds I am itching to start total construction time definelty factors in to what kit out of the stash is next. I beat myself up and build the Revell 1/48 Me 110 with the Cutting Edge correction for the engines. I managed to hack up the wings and get the resin in place only to find out the wing to fusalage fit was a nightmare. I must have spend a good 100 hours on this kit. Way more than I ever intened. Looking back though one of my favorite built kits is the Cr 42 so I guess in the end it was defintly worth it. Here are a couple of pics of the Sm 84. It definetly is no prize winner but I think it is cool because of the unusual subject.
