P-47N
Posted by jeaton01 on Sunday, December 9, 2007 3:02 PM

This is the ProModeler P-47N, built for the P-47GB, more photos there.  Aftermarket parts used were the Eduard instrument panel and clear parts from a Hawk P-47.  Where the PM clear parts went I don't know.  Perhaps they were not in the box, but the anciaent Hawk parts will have to do until I either get the parts or find them prior to stepping on them  I made the wing tip transparencies from an old drafting triangle, don't need them for Autocad drawings.

The NMF finish is SNJ with a few patches of Alclad II, over a base coat of Future.

If I were you, I would go with the Academy P-47N. There are at least two boxings and it is the better kit IMHO. There are quite a few "mishapen" details on this kit. The Academy isn't perfect either, but IMHO it would be the better purchase.

Steve

With every post I read....the bar gets higher.

Very nice build.....all the other work makes it simple to forget the glass trouble.

Thanks, everyone, for the generous comments.  I like how it came out, but as usual there are a few parts best left unseen.  Not going to let them bother me, I like the P-47N.  If I had to go to WW II, I'd like one for my ride.  Now, if I could just improve my gunnery...

I think both the Academy and ProModeler P-47N kits are nice, both have faults.  The surface detail on the Academy is overstated in some places and the engine is quite wrong as it is not the C series gear case, the Promodeler has nice detail except it is molded a bit soft and some parts are thin to the point they can be difficult, the wing  tips were the worst example of that.  I don't think the dihedral is quite enough on the Promodeler kit despite my best efforts to do a Picard and Make It So.  I thought I had it but once the smoke from the CA cleared it looked a bit flat there.  Too many seams to fit at once when assembling the wing to the fuselage.  Which kit may be a moot point as I don't recall a reissue of the ProModeler kit.  Either kit benefits from a resin interior, the Academy kit has the wrong floor.  I used the True Details interior with the Eduard PE instrument panel.  Next time I use a TD interior I am going to dunk all of the parts in Future to seal them, they have a porous look under the camera that was not apparent to me until they were all done.

The tail is painted, I was afraid I would have a disaster trying to decal all of those surfaces.  The kit's Invisaclear decals are very thin and a lot of care was necessary when putting them on but they look nice on the model.  The Bar Fly emblem below the cockpit is fun.  Just what a 20 year old fighter jock needs on the side of his airplane.

Hey jeaton,

Outstanding lookin Jug you've got there!! Nose art aint to bad either... Laughs I would like to use  the Alclad/SNJ as well but I am kind of hesitant..

What did you do to prepare it,base coat and how long did you let her sit before applying the decals n such?

Again, great lookin build.. By the way, any pix of the office?

Flaps up,

There are photos of the build in the P-47 Group Build thread, or you can go to my website, I've put them there also, and there are pictures of the cockpit both places.

I put a coat of Future on the bare plastic, and there were a few areas where I also applied gloss black to.  It's the first time I've tried that, and it seemed to work.  I probably should have waited longer, but the SNJ went on about 24 hours after the Future.  On e thing I have figured out with the SNJ, at least for me, is that it is not really necessary to get full coverage with the spray material, as the polishing powders add most of the color fill, I rubbed the powder on before the coat was past tacky, which is only a few minutes.  The most difficult part was repairing problems, especially where the black was.  The second coat tended to react with the paint near the feathered line making a raised area which was difficult to work out.  I suspect that is because the SNJ is lacquer, might be better to stick with lacquer undercoats.  For me the jury is still out as to whether the Future undercoat is a reasonable way to go, over most of the model it worked very well.  Having more patience than I do and giving it more time to cure may pay off.

I put the decals on the day after the last aluminum work was done, it dries very quickly.  No setting solutions were use on most decals, and none was applied except on top of some of the larger decals, not on the paint.  It doesn't seem to be needed, and might affect the finish.
