The Wildcats continue their slow progress toward paint. I got a few rare moments of daytime modeling this afternoon, and got some final bits installed (though, since these are going in the kids' rooms, I decided to fill in the pitot tube holes...they'd just get broken off anyway). Also got the cowls stuffed and ready for priming, and managed to mask off what will probably be the single hardest mask line on these birds - the colored tails.

I'd been hoping to prime tonight, but it's raining, so I may have to divert over the to Soviet planes again if it doesn't clear up...

I finally got the paint I'd been waiting on and then, as important, time at the bench.  And after tonight's painting session, it is almost time to order more paint (although this will not delay my work unless I have massive touch-up requirements).

I left all of those areas unpainted over the Krylon primer coat reasoning that there was not much sense in wasting the white aluminum paint on areas that I knew would either be magnesium or dark aluminum.

Here she is all taped up and ready to go (back to the painting bench, that is)

Then I discovered that the magnesium alclad paint doesn't seem to cover the black Krylon.  So it was back to the white aluminum (which is why I'm not on the verge of running out again).  Now letting that paint cure before I return to the bench in a few days to resume magnesium painting.  And while it may appear that I'm getting close, I don't feel like that is the case.  There are going to be many more painting sessions preceded by massive masking sessions - there will be dark aluminum and polished aluminum panels I will pick out, and the tip of the rudder, the front landing gear cover, and the engine intakes will all require first a coat of white then a coat of red.  And I plan to paint the wing walk lines.

Steven - man that thing is looking epic! It's interesting to hear that the Magnesium doesn't cover over Krylon. Was considering using that or Steel Alclad for the La-5's exhaust plating...good to know.

More progress and a nice little hitch last night. Got the tails and cockpits masked, sprayed the interior color on the canopies (let's hope I did the masking right!), then decanted some Tamiya white primer to airbrush onto the wings, forward cowl, and where the yellow fuselage ring will go.

By the end of the night, the Tamiya white ended up in the trash. Doesn't spray on well, and I found out last night that it doesn't seem to airbrush very well, either. At various pressures and distances, it seemed to "congeal" after maybe a few minutes and then spit a dusty finish all over everything. Clean up was awful, too. The stuff gummed up the airbrush worse than anything I've ever sprayed before.

Maybe it was just the can...but I think next time I need a white undercoat for yellow or what-have-you, I'll just overspray some Mr. Surfacer with Vallejo or Tamiya white.

Guess I'll be wet sanding tonight!

I got a bit done yesterday...not too much because of a double shift at work and then watching the Huskers dominate on the Washington Huskies 56-21!!

I attached teh nose cone, but it was a smaller diameter than the rest of the fuselase. A bit of sanding and I was able to get it smooth.

OWL - it's looking really great. IMO the nose cone is what "makes" that plane!

The paint troubles...yeah...frustrating beyond belief, but it's my fault for going back to the Tamiya white again and again trying to make it work. Strange because I use Tamiya grey all the time for small interior parts and such, and it works great...

It is big.  I have difficulty just getting into a position where I can paint.

As for painting, I was able to put down the coat of magnesium today after church.  Went on nice and looks good although it doesn't seem to look like the magnesium in many of the photos I see.  I am using the book "Magnesium Overcast" as a reference guide - the areas that are indicated as magnesium don't appear to be the same color that the paint is.  The paint looks more like burnt metal to my eyes, but then I am by no means an expert.  In any event, the magnesium paint is certainly different than the white aluminum and provides for good visual interest, so it gets to stay.

And I tried putting the magnesium directly over krylon black again today on the bomb bay doors, that I neglected to paint white aluminum last night.  The alclad seemed to cover just fine today.  Perhaps my lighting is not good enough to work late at night like I did yesterday.

Doogs - If I need a white under coat I just use MM white and haven't had any problems with using it.

Well I went to place a metalizer sealer on my 757 and the sealer attacked a portion of the paint Which is weird cause I've done many NMF birds and this is the first time its done this, maybe I got a bad batch or something.  Well I cleaned up the bad part and resprayed the NMF and its drying.  Hopefully this week I can put some sealer on it (which hopefully won't attack the paint this time) and then get the AA marknings on it.  I did get her on her landing gear in the mean time.

Thanks.  But even in 72nd scale, the B-36 is a bigger kit than the 48th scale B-17.  I think when the Peacemaker was first released in around '80, it was proclaimed the largest scale injection molded model kit ever produced.

 

This got me curious. Surely it can't be bigger than the B-52? Still trying to find the answer there...though I guess maybe the swept versus straight wings could make the difference.

But along the way, I found this shot of a B-36 next to a B-29. Holy cow! I knew the B-36 was a big ol' bomber, but I never had any conception of just how big next to its predecessor. And considering the -29 dwarfed the B-17...geez.

Yes, the B-36 dwarves even the B-52. B-52 rings in around 185ft and the B-36 at 230!!!!

Aggie -- if I remember correctly, the Monogram 1:72 B-36 remains the largest injecion aircraft model ever made, still beating the Trumpeter 1:72 Tu-95 Bear (it is 1:72, right?) on total span and mass. However the largest injection kit of any description I believe remains the Nichimo 1:200th battleship Yamato, at nearly five feet long.

Anybody got any other candidates? I could offer the 1:35th scale Dora railway gun (which coincidentally is the Internet Hobbies commercial in the right hand column as I type this!) as a candidate for greatest sheer mass, plus over 2000 parts, in the same category as some of the Heller 1:100th scale ship kits.

I noticed the nose gear well ended up shifting when I glued the two fuselage halves together, resulting in a bit of a gap.   I shimmed a bit of styrene to fill the space. I think I am getting the hang of this stuff!

Sanded the Wildcats (again) last night, using wet 600, 1200, then 2000 grit paper. Everything is oh so smooth now. Unforunately, I've got several gray patches here and there, and as I discovered, the Gunze orange yellow seems semi-translucent. At least enough so that those gray patches are EXTREMELY evident. Guess I'll be laying down another white coat tonight. Now do I want to go Model Master, Tamiya + Mr. Color Leveling Thinner, or Vallejo + Future?

You could add the 1:72 type VII's and Gato class subs to that list... Friggin huge! The VIIC/41  (slightly ove 3 feet) looks very impressive on it's shelf in my mancave The GATO with 4 feet is even bigger and i have it, but no space to put it once it would be finished....

Your B-36 built is taking shape and I must say that is hugh even for 1/72.

Though I know it will never happen I would like to see a B-52 in 1/48.

Thunderbolt, I do stand corrected in terms of the B-36 vs that target, but since I rarely build targets, I didn't even think to be more specific in my verbiage.

P-47 Update,

Well, Sept. 15th has passed which is when I thought I would be finished.

However I had life and cold issues and worse I messed up on the canopy. This resulted in me cannibalizing another P-47D since Tamiya USA will not have replacement parts for this kit until November.
