Guys, I am calling this done.

Summery - Trumpeter 1/32 P-40b Tomahawk Mk2a of #2 sqn South African Air Force , Libya 1941 flown by F/O Aitken.

Built OOB except for PE harnass and Tallyho decals.

Piants all enamles with future mattcoat.

I tried to simulate the soot stains that the rear exhaust stubs would have from the ones infront of them.Hence the forward one is claener . They were painted rust with black drybrushing.

On the bottom I "chipped" with silver on the areas where stone damage would occur on grave strips. Aswell as on the leading edges of the stabs.

Theuns.   That's a fine looking p-40 the small details make the biggest difference.

well it will be brief this time. 

spent some time in the bunker over the last couple of days and have something to show for it.

pardon the pics. white on white plays havoc with my camera. 

firewall work has commenced with some success.

notice i have also added a very rough carb to the engine. and wouldnt you know it i finally stumbled across the picture of the manifold i was looking for. not going to redo this time.

It seems no mater which p-40 kit in 1/48 you get there something not rite mostly shallow pits.

What about the hasagowa kits I don't here much about them ?

I'll be jumping in with the hobby craft f/l model not sure about a/m parts yet. I think on my spruse it's marked Amt  brand. I just need to take fair of a technical issue involving posting picks fine scale modeler is working on it.

that is the price for any of the kits.  there is something with each that is just a bit off.  but to be honest they all can build up to very nice builds.

Joe: that looks great. I'm on the same spot with mine. I've been debating on how best to represent and secure the mounting brackets for the engine.   I think 1:32 offers a bit more ease with scratching all this out. Lol.

The Hasegawa  1/48 kit is pretty nice too. I don't know about accuracy but it goes together beautifully. You just want to glue the tail pieces to the fuselage before gluing the two halves together like on the 32nd. 

having built the 48 a couple of years ago I can tell you it's pretty detailed OOB it's almost a verbatim downscale of the 32nd kit except it came first I believe. 

Joe , that's some inspiring scratch work. Someday I will find the patience to put the work into such things. I have a hard enough time not getting bogged down with just what's in the box.

None of . My lhs Cary many handshakes kits but it's on my list. Also I have never built a air craft with a different tail section that would be different.

A couple of proof of life picks since I've not updated this in a bit.

Missed a few nights of bench time as we were on a mini vacation over the weekend. Anyway, I had a setback with weathering. I had a horrible haze appear on the topside as I dot filtered...I had to do a substantial bit of touch ups on the wings and topside insignia, re-clear coat and take a different route with weathering.

This one should be wrapped up in a couple of nights. The biggest problem I'm having right now is figuring out how I'm going to do the antenna rigging. It's pretty elaborate on this plane as I believe there's supposed to be three lines from the vertical stab....one to each wingtip and one to the canopy. I don't think stretched sprue is appropriate for this scale...at least not without having some sort of anchor....and I just ain't sure how to go about that....

dflu, I'd been contemplating the same thing with the aerials.  My solution was to take care of the anchor points before closing up the wings and tail of the fuselage.  On the tail, to anchor the three lines I'm going to place a very thin brass piece cut out of brass sheet...place a tiny hole.  I felt this would be studier and less likely to break later down the road.  I'm trying to figure out a better way of doing the attachments to the wings.  So far I'm going to set them up before and pull them through a tiny hole I've made already.  I'm not sure how I feel about the lines hanging out till they're attached.  But I'll feel better about the cleanliness of their attachment this way.

Since your's is a little further along maybe if you made a plug that would fit snugly into a hole in the wing...you could attach the line to the plug and secure it to the wing that way.  Then pull those taut and hook them up the the tail.  For the tail, I'd probably try masking off the part of the tail you're working on and carefully cut into the spot where your anchor piece will go.

Give that a thought or two.  =]

Ugh. I jacked around for 4 hours with aerials last night. I tried stretched sprue...kept breaking...I'd manage to get two on and BAM...break...I tried copper wire...wouldn't cooperate shape wise...so I'm going to order some EZ Line next time I make an online purchase and just add it later so I can move this one off the desk....

ALL DONE!!!

What a blast this one was. My second completion of the year, but the other one having been mostly completed before moving, this one is special.

No issues with the kit at all really. The seam where the tail section attaches needed some love, as did the seams in non-panel line locations around the rear canopy glazing. Time consuming, but not challenging particularly.

dflu:  Hang in there!  Those aerials will come.  It's probably the most frustrating part of the build for me.  It may well take me an hour or more and multiple attempts just to secure a tiny little piece of stretched sprue.  In the past at least...I'm trying to remedy all that with this new attempt.

Great job on finishing though.  I wouldn't mean to overlook the obvious pretties, but I'm especially excited about the undersurface you painted and how you went about it.  Very clever.  I may be borrowing that in the near future.  =]

Hey guys!  I'm sorry I've not kept up quiet as much as I should've.  I've been very focused on my F4U-1A for the first half of my homage to Greg Boyington, to which this P-40 will be the second half.  I've spent the last hour, or so, going through this thread and all I can say is WOW!!!  I truly feel out of my league here, but I'm up for the challenge :-)  I finished the corsair night before last, so now I can focus all my attention towards this project.  I actually opened the kit up this morning about 5 and started taking a look at it.  I'm a bit surprised/overwhelmed at the differences in the cockpit lay outs, especially the I.P.  I've got the True Details pit, and with a bit of modification I think I'll be able to make it work.  So, now the research begins in earnest, and I'm looking forward to working with everyone here more closely!  Raymond

PS... I know there were faster more maneuverable and better armed planes, but as a kid this was always my favorite!

Can't knock a a/c that stayed in construction from the beginning of the war till the end.

Also was a favorite of mine as a kid and still at the top for me.

Plays they just look freaking cool.   :)

I would love to have the last model of the p-40 planet models makes one. I can't justify the 80+$
