The NASA technicians have determined that the bright anomally is simply a reflection off of the lunar surface.  But since the landings were all fake, it's probably just a stage light.

First off thanks guys!!! Wish I'd gotten done a little earlier but hey as long as you meet the (extended) deadline. And the astronaut was a fun change of pace and cool to work on a classic kit for a change. 

Gary: Nice work there on the boosters- they look cool in front of the TV backdrop. Wish I'd thought of the same myself. 

Bakster: Better the capsule smell of chocolate than thruster fumes as Gary commented on the Apollo ASTP mission...

I made it to the San Diego Air and Space Museum today. I know the GB is over, But there is some good things there. Most of the spacecraft are Mockups, as is the XS-1.

My job has good points and bad points. I'm away from family a lot, but I get to go to a lot of museums. Mostly the good outways the bad. 

Great pics Mach. I understand about the job, I was a truck driver for 5 years.

Then you get it modelcrazy. As I get older it gets harder and harder, but I still enjoy it so I'll keep at it. 

One thing that the San Diego museum makes clear is how advanced Apollo was compared to Gemini, and how advanced Gemini was compared to Mercury.

I know this sounds obvious, but seeing the 3 of them next to each other really points out the obvious. 

Gemini is so well designed for earth orbit its a wonder that Blue Gemini was canceled.

Apollo is still a great design, put some modern systems in it and you will have....Orion!

I have been down for the month with family and health issues, but I managed to get some coats of white on the Saturn V this weekend.  Still a lot of work to do.  I didn't expect it to take this long.  Will start masking for the black.

I had an endoscopic operation last week to clean out my bile duct.  Also had every test and scan under the sun to make sure it wasn't anything else that was giving me problems and everything came back negative.  I am now feeling like I'm 18 again.  Life is getting back to chaotic normal. 

I am finishing up another project on my bench, so the Saturn is kinda stalled.  Well, to be honest, I am intimidated with masking the areas for the black across the corrugated surfaces.  Anyone have any tips?  I have both the flexible and regular Tamiya tape that I thought of using.  How about some way to seal it aroung the edges? Any other material such as ticky tac?  I never tried this before.

Scott: Glad to hear you're feeling better! 

Not sure about the masking. Maybe rub it down into the crevices? If I'm not sure about the mask sealing I spray it first with a clear overcoat like Future directly toward the masks. It will seep under the mask giving you overspray- but since it's clear it won't show. That will seal the masks before you apply the actual coat of paint. 

You can also use Sticky Tack as you noted or Silly Putty. Not sure how you'd get it good and straight though.  

I'm with Gam on this. The Tamiya tape is great for this but the paint can still seep under. Although I've never tried it, I hear the clear coat technique works well, just be careful removing the mask I would think.

When I built mine years ago I used blue painters tape and burnished it down in the "trenches" of the coregation. I had to do a bit of touch up.

One trick I've heard about, but not tried myself is to mask it. Then spray a light coat of the base coat over the masks, let dry completely, then spray the black over. The base coat seeps but its the same color so no worries. That also seals the mask.

Glad to hear you're feeling better.  Hope things keep improving!

As for the masking problem across the corrigations, I think the Tamiya tape (or painters tape) would probably be best, as long as you rub it down along the edges with a toothpick or some suitable object.  As Mach71 suggests, giving it a spray of the base coat will probably seal up the edges.  I have also heard of using Future, or just a spray of gloss/dull coat.  I think either would work fine.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I may try a little mix of Tamiya tape and painters tape.  I also have drafting tape that is very close the Tamiya that is quite thin.  Then I will venture into trying Future as a sealer.  I have used it and clear gloss as a sealer on other models, but those were gentle curved surfaces.
