Military Veterans GB II

I'm interested! Just wonder if UN service also counts, and also if National conscript service counts?

My problem is that what I "rode" was/is classified!

Maybe a bit off topic, but has anyone ever felt like doing a group build dedicated to our relatives who served (Dad was in the Gator Navy, Grandpa was a Navigator on various Patrol Aircraft in the Navy, and my Great Grandpa was in the Field Artillery back during WWI) conducted in the same manner?  Might be fun.  Only thing I crew now is a desk, but was a M109A2/A3 PL and a M109A6 BC back in my Artillery days...  A foreign area officer now and work with the ROKs a lot... Perhaps a K1A1?  Anyway, all the best.!

Yes! Would you allow me to build somthing my grandfather or great uncle crewed? My great uncle was in a Sherman and my grandpa was in Austraulia. He got a ride in a P-61 so I could do that with him in it. Or should this be a seperate GB?

If it was you country's military commentment to the UN such as peacekeeping forces, I would say yes

John,  I know that last time Phil H was allowed to build his dads F-111, but I would like to keep this to ex/serving personnel.  Thanks for your input.

I was in the first GB and had a hard time picking what aircraft to build so this would give me the excuse to do some more. I have been doing this as my own personal GB for years so I have plenty of subjects to choose from.

Jim,  I would like to do something a little different this time, and keep this for ex members or serving members.  Not to denigrate the service of any of our relatives, but I would like to keep the feel of the GB by having people model something they actually had some "hands on" time with.

Well, i'm/was a Photographer's Mate 2nd Class so i had hands on with alot of USN Aircraft, but no A-7's, bummer. I was a TARPS Ape so i been up close and personel with Tomcats.  So if i worked with other aircraft in the duties of my Photo rating can i use any of those?

Two things.  First, THANK YOU to all of you for your service. 

Second is about my "service".  I spent 2 years in an ROTC unit back in college.  About two weeks before I left for camp I got hurt and effectively ended my military career before it really started.  So I'm just asking to see if I'm eligible.  If not, that's quite alright, but if so, awesome.  Thanks again everyone.

I am not a veteran, but I am planning an important build for a veteran.

A friend and coworker is a retired USMC tank driver. He drove the first tank into Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. I am going to build his M60A1 as it appeared during that conflict. I am planning on using the Tamiya kit with reactive armor, unless I can find the Academy kit that includes the M-9 plow. The plow is actually the main factor that he was the first tank in Kuwait. In the first days of the war, they decided to mount the plow onto his tank. He could not keep up with the column due to the extra weight of the plow so the next time at basecamp the mechanic removed the restrictor plate from the engine to improve the horsepower. After the next mission, they decided to remove the M-9 but forgot to put the restrictor plate back on so James had a super Patton on his hands. He says that the tank was clocked at close to 80 going down the highway. So, that tank was the first in Kuwait simply by virtue of outrunning everyone else.

I would love to share this build in this group build, if you will allow it, despite it not being built by a vet.

Looks like we are off to a start.  Should pick up a few more before the start date.

When you are definate about your build, let me know and I'll put it on page one.

As far as I know, Verlinden STILL hasn't produced an "intel analyst's desk set" like I requested a couple of years ago...

Suppose I could do a Humvee or something like that...wish I could find a modern deuce and a half to build.

Yeah, there must have been something you were inside of....did you guys ever go into the field ?  Unit exercise, stuff like that ?

All we had was a flatbed with hoops and canvas over the top of it. Don't remember the designation for that type of deuce, sadly. Now that I think about it, seem to remember taking the driving test in that as well.

What needs to be converted in that kit to make a modern version?

Basically, leave off the quad fifty and scratch the bows, troopseats, and tarp for the bed, and build a tarp & bow for the cab and an exhaust stack going up the right side (instead of back to the rear that's found on the gas-burners) to make it a multi-fuel... Poof: Instant M-35A2..

Being a Squid, all that is really pertinent to me are ships. However, I have served on 3 different Bird-Farms and watched more F-14's, -18's, etc launch and recover than I can remember. Does that count? Otherwise, it's either build a carrier, Spruance Class Destroyer or a Ticonderoga Class Cruiser. please tell me I can build an airplane...

You can count me in.  If I can find all to do an M1114 Enhanced Capability HMMWV that I had in Iraq that will be in.  If not, I've driven or crewed many other tracked and wheeled vehicles.  I did get to take a courtesy flight around Oahu once for about 5 hours on a UH-60, maybe I can do that.  hmmmm.  M109, M992, M977, M151, M110, M923, MW-24C, FLU-419, M35A2, M548...so many choices.  Guess I need to finish my other GB's so I can focus.  

Okay, I decided to go with  a 1/48 UH-60.    More details to come.

Back to the topic at hand.  I would be interested in joining the group as well.  I have not seen a response from you yet, but as a former carrier sailor, can I build one of the planes from a squadron that was onboard the same time as me?  I do have a couple of other options being a model of the submarine that my prototype was based on, or one of my first carrier.  Knowing how long I typically spend building a carrier, I would rather do something a little less time consuming.  Anyway, count me in, and let me know about aircraft that served aboard with me.

More Power Scotty - thanks man! Last year was actually an off year for me...ran into some knee troubles related to an old army injury (see, not off topic! ) so my mileage was cut back quite a bit. Not sure what you can do to my mycyclinglog profile if you aren't logged in, but try to look at 2006... Keep it up! You'll hit 4k this year!

I did look at the blog, and took note of those impressive spikes over all three years shown.  I do not know that I will be able to outdo myself this year as I somehow herniated a disk over the holidays and just started doing some riding with the bike on a training stand this past Saturday.  It was also a really big commitment that I did mostly in memory of a cousin.  Anyway, with my son graduating this year, I will probably have a few things to keep me busy early in the season, but I am anxious for the weather to finally break and to hit the road.

Sorry for going off topic again in your build, but like dupes, I may have done my initial damage to the disk back in my Navy days when I took up power lifting.  Anyway, I am thinking that I will commit to the 1/350 scale USS Tullibee (SSN-597) kit by Yankee Model Works.  I may change my mind by July though.

Are crossovers from other GBs allowed?  I am committed to the S.A.C. GB, (1/72 SR-71), here on FSM that will co-incide with your dates and also a 1/72 C-141A for the "Operations" GB on ARC.

I'm in...I'll be doing a (really small) 1:144 Revell B-2.  Spent almost 14 yrs working avionics (Bomb/Nav) on it.  Why the small scale?  Space!  Currently stationed in Rota, Spain working C-5 and C-17's and I am afraid of building larger scale knowing I will move again in a couple of years.  I'd hate to see something get broke.  I am looking forward to seeing what exactly I will be able to do detail wise with it....

Thats great.  We are starting to pick up some more "enlistees"  I will take a roll call with who is on board, towards the end of June.  If you know of anyone who served, let them know about this GB will ya?

Just the excuse I'm looking for to do up my old gun section (the first one I chiefed, that is) in a diorama... Put me down for an Italeri M109A2 plus AFV M548 diorama from Charlie Battery- 3/3 FA, 2AD, circa 1984...  My freshly-sewn Staff Sergeant insignia still damp from the Wetting-Down a few days earlier, lol.. Hi guys, I would like to join with a 1/72 RoG Transall C-160. Only one problem....I already started to glue a few pcs together a while back before I shelved it due to move and havent touched it since.

As far as service goes 12 years German Air Force Lufttransportgeschwader 62 ( Air Transport Wing 62 for all of you out of towners). 6 years equipment shop and 6 years C/C.

I thought that AFV Club also had a single-piece track set for the M-113, but I can not find anything in doing a quick search.  The AFV Club individual link tracks really are not that bad to put together, as I have had pretty good success with them in the past.

Heres my Italeri Land Rover with the extra resin bits to make it into an Australian Army version, plus the resin General Service trailer that I used to tow with all my company clerk consumables for the CP.

So now that the second season of Veteran GB is on the air I might as well get slowly started too (well I actually did a while back but dont tell nobody). Here she is the "Angel of the Skies" as we called her. Never lost a plane through mechanical failure in over 40 years and more than 500,000 flying hours. Unfortunately RoG shows the "new" 3-color camo on the box, but decals and instructions are only for the old camo and I havent been able to locate decals for the new camo yet. Anyway I will build her OOB since she is a pretty nice kit from the start and I will post pics of my progress as I go along.

Ok, here are the first shots of the plastic. These are just some pics to show the detail on this kit. The decal sheet has well in excess of 200 stencils which makes it a life long project in itself.

Can I see some insignia from your unit LTG 62 on that decal sheet ?  It would be cool to have the markings from your unit.  I'm going to have to either handpaint/stencil mine, as decals dont exist.  200 stencils for that C-160 !!  Hope you have an optivisor.

Wirraway, I do plan on using my old units markings. But it wont be any on the colorful anniversary Markings. I think Peddinghouse In Germany makes  a decal sheet celebrating the 500,000 flight hours and I think  it was celebrated in  my unit ( I was already in the States by then). And no I am not in the possession of an optivisor, still working with the squared eyesight tool.

Congratulations on having lasted thirty years in the service.  That really is quite a feat!   Personally, I had my fill at six and a half and headed off to the private sector.

I have one project to clear from my bench (it is about 90% complete), and then I will commence the building of the USS Tullibee.  I was fondling through the parts a couple of days before the scheduled start date, and this looks to be relatively simple, as it is a mostly resin kit.  Now that I have written that last comment, I have probably doomed myself to poorly fitting pieces and air voids.

 OK, fellow vets, I'm finally underway with the Revell 1:48 F-89J.  Below are some pics of the pit.

Thanks, guys.  I hope the rest of the build is as enjoyable.  Seems that fixing up the cockpit is a fun part of the build for me, although it shouldn't be since these parts are so tiny - don't know how you guys do it in 1:72!!

I just wrapped up my Pfalz D.IIIa and Hansa Brandenburg W.29 for another build, so the USS Tullibee is up next on the bench.  I will keep you posted as I progress and will post photos as I make the time to take them.

That F89 is coming along nicely. You may be the first to finish at this rate.  I really dont want to break my own rule of "one build at a time"  so I need to finish my stratofortress for the SAC group build before I start on that Land Rover.

I finished the Tullibee (SSN-597) yesterday.  Being resin, there was not much to take in-progress photos of.  I will get a picture or two taken this week to post here, so keep your eyes open.

Here she is, the USS Tullibee (SSN-597).  After Nuclear Power School I attended prototype training at S1C in Windsor, Connecticut, which was based on this boat.  The Yankee Modelworks kit is resin with a few white metal items, and photoetched propellor.  This was a relatively easy build overall, and the base was made from an old award plaque.  Any comments are welcomed.

Scotty - Nice work.  I had a friend in college who served on a nuclear sub, but that was a long time ago.  His name was Jim Greene.

Bondoman - yup, I worked on F-89s.  Actually, my first encounter with military aircraft was T-6s and P-51s.  Also, C-47, F-94B/C, T-33, F-89J, and F-102/TF-102.  Spent 10 yrs as radio/nav tech in AF and ANG.  Left service in 1963 to return to college, and maybe this will be more believable when I tell you that I'm age 75.

Some nice work there.  My landrover is coming along.  I will post pics when I get all the resin bits on.  Then I have to wait for the paint to arrive (from U.K.)  White Ensign models was the only place I could find that sells Australian lustreless olive drab in tinlets.

Hey, Scotty - at my age, I have a small stash. 

It's cooled off a bit and the grandkids have left, so I've managed to do a little painting.  This is MM buffing metalizer.

Hey Wirraway, way to go - glad to see someone still knows there is a group build going on here.  Hard to realize that we are a third of the way into this 6 month build!! 

I've made a little more progress on the Scorpion, as shown below.  Hope to finish it soon.  It's not as tough a build as I thought it might be as a Revell.  Also, hope to have better pics next time.

 Well, here's my F-89J, ready or not.  It's not museum quality, but I'm reasonably happy with it.  I'm not much for weathering and such, so it's sort of a plain jane build.  This was pretty much OOB except for some additional details in the cockpit.  Paint is MM aluminum plate buffing metalizer with touches of MM titanium metalizer on the exhausts.  I finished with a coat of Future which didn't turn out too well - should have used a top coat specific for the metalizer.  Decals are a combination of kit and home-grown.  Over the years, I'd forgotten how large this plane was in its day - it really had a monster wing.  In the display cabinet, this model really dwarfs my group of P-51s, T-6, T-33, F4U, etc.

Thanks for looking - I hope it's acceptable for the Vets GB.

Dupes - also, thanks.  The pit is mostly OOB.  I added Eduard seatbelts and built the yellow ejection handles.  I used a silver pencil for highlights over the flat black panels.  Page 5 of this GB has pics of the cockpit.

Landrover and trailer are done, just need to screw up the courage to use my AB for the first time.  Been existing on Tamiya rattle cans up till now, but just too expensive.  This would be the ideal test bed, as its all one colour (lustreless  modern australian olive drab).  Mind you, I do remember painting the real thing with brushes !

And here she is so far. Base coat of NATO green on the interior, bottom, and sides. Chassis, suspension, and wheels in Flat Black. Detail work due up next.

That Scorp looks fantastic!  Is it too late to join?  Was a Centurion tankie, but my particular model (Sh'ot Mk.4) isn't out yet by AFV Club, so, if OK, I'd build a Revell Merkava III, as I was there during the transition to the Merkava III, and the Revell kit has the right badge for my unit.  I never actually drove a Merkava III although, just saw them, and watched the 120 smooth bore being fired at night (an amazing sight!).  

If not, I flew in a Herc, and guarded AH-64As (got to know them very well), and worked with the crews of AH-64A and F-16 A&B (and sat in the cockpit of an F-16A!), been in jeeps, command cars, trucks, and Gawd knows what else!  I could even justify, just, a Hotchkiss 2 seater or a T-62, as we had both examples on my base, or, the earlier Sh'ot, as mine was a development of these earlier ones, and AFV Club do produce one of those.

First an update, I took the USS Tullibee to the Kalamazoo IPMS show a few weeks ago and left with an out of box, and second place in the submarines category awards.

Looking good so far.  I will keep checking back in to see the finished product.

I guess this GB died a slow death - doesn't seem to be any activity.  That's really too bad - I thought there would be more vets participating in here. 

My HMMWV is stalled but not dead... planning on finishing it up in the near future. Too much stuff got in the way over the past few months.

Yeah I am still plugging away slowly. Today I finished applying the green base color for the tri color NATO scheme, and also painted the soft top in a similar olive green. More pics coming soon.

A little ill, perhaps, but still staggering along.

I plead guilty to neglecting my GB as moderator.  The Winter Warriors kinda dragged me away for a bit there.

I'm actually stalled because of my crappy airbrush.  I'm using one of those Tamiya Spray Work AB and the battery goes flat after a couple of minutes.  I gotta either find an AC adaptor, or bite the bullet and buy a decent AB.  Australian Lustreless olive drab doesnt come in rattle cans, so its AB or nuttin'

I think part of the problem might be that I'm trying to charge a NiM-H battery in a Ni-cad charger.  

I haven't quit either... Just not doing much armor.. The M109 HAS been started and the turret is about 50%...

stick why the tri-color scheme inside the hummer ? when i served in the 101st the only thing that was in a camo pattern was the outside vehicle . the whole interior was nato green . especially the seats would be a almost khaki color or nato green not cammie . if you are going back and respraying and i jumped the gun sorry . just curious as to why you painted it that way .

Kenny, that was just the initial camo painting. I have not gone back yet to paint the seat cushions and all the other interior goodies (nice nomenclature huh? LOL) I am pretty certain that this particular HMMWV had a camo inside. at least on the metal parts. I was around it much of the time installing and removing the radios, but did not "live" in that one very much. I had a 1037 with a shelter. Many of the ones we had in the unit were hand me downs that came back stateside from Europe by way of Desert Storm and were repainted from NATO camo, to Sand, and then back to NATO camo.

cool thanks for the reply . and boy do i know what it is like to live out of them not too comfy but did the job . but once you got use to it not too bad. slept pretty much everywhere in my hummer .  are you building a 998 ? ours were definately just nato green inside . but who ever knows what other untis decide to do lol .

Yours looks great Kenny! Mine will be the soft top 4 door..I forget the nomencalture offhand. Have to look it up... But I am pretty sure its the 998.

I've seen both... The ones that come from cold-storage (and might wind up in another country's army) were green, and got the rest of the camo paint done at the OMS paintshop when they got assigned somewhere, the ones from the factory had the camo inside...

OK, I know this GB is deceased, but 14 months later I pulled this puppy out and am finishing it up. I added the bumper codes with some Verlinden Dry Transfers. Not an easy task on the tight area those are applied. Apologies for the weak alignment.

Then I made up the antennas for the vehicle's VRC-47 system-one shorty and one full length.

and finally I started work on scratchbuilding a pair of the later style rear view mirrors.
