Everyone's chiming in with progress today.  Lots of eye candy and good reading.

Wingman:  I'm really liking the paint job on the Tornado; it looks to be nearing completion and there's another waiting in the wings.  Also, I always look forward to the little teaks and improvements that you addd to your builds.  I always come away from a GB with a couple of new tricks and techniques.

Wow!!  Harshman joins yesterday and he already has the Flogger cocpit started and a pilot figure seated.  That's quick work.  I'm assuming that teh fuselage and wings aere only dry fited at this stage?

Eatthis:  Yep, gotta say that the paint work on the Tomcat looks convincing.  A nice amount of weathering.  I'm always impressed by the size of the F-14; that's a big aircraft even in 1/48.

Wingman, you did not dissappoint!!  Your Tornado looks quite menacing in that camo scheme.  As Pordoi said, I lood forward to seeing how you improve the kits contruction process.  Very nice work.  Bow Down

Harshman, you are making us look bad Big Smile  Nice, quick work on the Flogger.  Looking forward to seeing more.

Eatthis, your Tomcat is coming along nicely.  In Pordoi's defense, the primer coat does look like a weathered Tomcat fuselage.  The painted areas look good as well.

Man!!  What was I drinking this afternoon???  Embarrassed  Sorry fella, I saw the photo as a well weathered fuselage with pristine wings, which I took to be unpainted.  A quick re-visit to your post and it's very clear...   So let's just say this:  I was seeing a vision of your finished build; exquisitely weathered.   So there; now the pressure's on you...   Wink   Truth be told, your base coat does look like an aircraft well weathered by salt spray and age.

Thanks, macattack for coming to my defense and dragging my drunken a** back to base. Big Smile

Oh and a quick update! I arrived home to find that my resin CBU-87s and 2000 lb JDAMs were delivered.  Plans for this weekend are to finish off the Bone bomb bays and get them mounted to the fuselage.

No problem Pordoi Big Smile  Glad to hear you got some munitions for your Bone.  I am sure it will be quite the harbinger of destruction.

I have a small update to post.  I got the wings and stabs primered and preshaded.  I wasn't going to preshade the panel lines but after looking at the few photos I could find of the Strategic Camo scheme Bones the paint looked quited faded.

Here is the primered parts.  I used white primer for the upper surfaces and gray for the lower for a little more contrasting/faded look.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Here are the parts after the preshading.  As you can tell accuracy wasn't too big a deal.

lol np mate the camera flash does alter the look of the paint quite drastically tbh.

as for pressure considering iv never done any weathering of any kind never used decals at all iv just started using filler and iv never completed an aircraft (only done a few ships) id say the pressure is most deffinatly on lol

Eatthis- Nice Tomcat so far. Don't feel bad, I've never done preshading or any weathering before either so you're not alone there. You're setting the bar high for mine when I start it. Oh and Happy Birthday

Macattack- Nice preshading on the Bone.

I do have a question for anyone with an answer. Do you need to have recessed panel lines to preshade? Just wanted to know since i've never done it before.

OK, that must be it; the camera flash.  Very diplomatic to provide me with a face-saving excuse.  Yes   Thanks.  As for your perceived lack of experience, I see no problems there.  Continue with what you think looks right.  And as for weathering, ummmm; take a look at your base coat.  I think that you're already there!

And Happy 30th Birthday, youngster!!!   Toast

Medicman, you can preshade raised panel lines as well and make it look just as good.  I use the preshading to make the paint look faded and I use a wash to show the  panel lines.  You just need recessed panel lines if you plan to use a wash to bring out the panel lines.   Just don't preshade a BMF aircraft.....metal doesn't fade...it rusts Big Smile   I hope this helps.

Alright! Another Bone with some paint on it. Good job Kevin. Can't wait to see how the camo turns out.

I was looking through some back issues(not FSM) the other day and found a build up of the 1/72 Trumpeter Tupolev TU-160 Blackjack. Wish I had the time, money and space to put one together to go along with these B-1s.

eatthis, belated Happy BDay!  Why the frown? Save that for, ohhh, 50 or so. Big Smile Weathering is pretty new to me too. I'm gonna do as I've seen others recommend. A little at a time, walk away and let everything dry. Come back the next day and give it a little more thought. Kinda like applying decals.

Don, shaken or stirred? hehe Glad your resin showed up and congrats on the green.

After the kids go back to their momma's Sunday I'm gonna get started on weathering. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I don't screw the whole thing up. Thanks to a post in the airbrush and paint section I found the exact paint I want for the cans and nozzles, Alclad exhaust manifold. With a little Metalizer jet exhaust overspray and some drybrushed highlights it should work out just right.

Some of my Mig-27 Progress... Decide to go for desert camou. Everything in place and waiting to highlight panel line and give it a weathered look before fit in the weapon load and pylons.

I think I can get it done in few hours time or tml. Big Smile

Hi guys! After clearing the panel wash. Highlighting of panel lines will complete. After that apply some light pigment color to give it a few different tone for camou.

Then I use carbon black pigment to intensify the camou to complete weathering the plane. Finally will be hanging those goodies on this babe.

I decide to go for imaginery of R-77, KAB-500 Laser guided and with the deadly AA-73 WVR missiles to complete this super multi-role of nicked 'Super Mig-27'

I only got my kit last 2 days. I just start this kit yesterday.. And I complete it today.

Ok, a quick review of this 1/72 academy Mig-27. Kit has good panel lines, detail is decent. Fit is almost perfect except the air intake which is badly out of line which you need to use putty to align it. Cockpit is poor but once you close the canopy. I don't think that is a problem as you can't see it. As for weaponery, some choices you can make but I have some left over modern Russian weapon kit and decide to doll it up.

Bish, hope yrs Mig-23 will turn out well and claim yr badge soon. Big Smile

I will jump over to my Super Etenard project now.. See you guys!

Ditto  I'll have to transfer one of his photos of the completed model to the front page.  OK, in the time it took Harshman to complete his Flogger, I got 14 bombs painted and mounted to the launchers...

Here are the ten CBU cluster bombs mounted on the tactical munitions dispenser.

It's amazing how one can spot flaws so easily in photos that weren't noticed during painting.  I swear the camera adds them deliberately.  And they're not as visible on the real thing... really!!  Whistling  Just make like you didn't see them... Confused

Also painted the rotary launcher,

The load for the rotary are BLU-109 warheads obtained from shull24.com.  Really nice stuff with lots of detail.

So as not to cover al the work I did on the launcher, I mounted only 4 of the BLU-109s..

so when completed, this will be the view looking into the bomb bay..

The mid and fore bomb bays are currently being assembled, then the launchers will be inserted and everything glued into the lower fuselage.  Then at last I can move on and work on that seam in the wing and begin assembly of the landing gear.  These bomb bays have literally been a model all to themselves.

I know what you mean about errors showing up in photos. Usually i don't see it until somone else points it out, but with me its usualy so obvious i kick myself.  That rotary launcher is awsome, that is the one you stratch built  right.

Great job on the launcher and bombs Pordoi.  Yes  Your B-1 looks like it is ready to ruin somebody's afternoon.  I have heard the products at Shull24.com are quite nice and by what you have posted, it has been confirmed.

I sprayed some Gunship Gray on the wings and stabs.  I will spray the Green Drab tonight and post a pic tomorrow.   Then a little bit of the Euro 1 Gray and the wings and stabs will officially be painted and I can get the main fuselage section buttoned up.

I still have a ways to go yet but I am happy with the way it looks so far.

Don that looks awesome! Whole lotta work in the launcher and bombs.

Kevin, looking forward to some pics.

I've been working on weathering the Tornado a bit. Doing a little experimenting. Doesn't show a lot in the first set of pics but did a little panel wash. Don't have any oils yet so I just used MM Raw Umber. I've tried using mineral spirits but it just doesn't seem to mix with Model Master enamels for me so I just use enamel thinner. One of these days I'll get some oils.

Yeh, you have to look for it but that's ok. There's more to come. I did a little experimenting with a satin clear to seal it. I've had problems shooting Future lately, must have to do with temperature. Wants to dry too quickly and not level. Got another bottle but it did the same so, I tried thinning with different alcohols. That may have worked but I didn't shoot any of it because it all turned cloudy. So, I finally reread a post and found that someone just thinned it with distilled water and that worked great. Mixed right up and stayed clear. That's what I used on this build before and after decals. Anyway, since I had some setting around, I mixed it about 50/50 with some MM Acryll semi-gloss and it worked real well. Shot at about 6 - 7psi and it layed down pretty as you please. And don't worry, I picked off the lint you see in a couple pics.

Was gonna order some Alclad II exhaust manifold to shoot the cans and nozzles but thought what the heck, let's use what's on hand. Was gonna use all Acryll  and some Alclad on this build but went with Tamiya for this. They were already primed so first I shot some Alclad stainless hoping that later I could rub down to it but don't think that's gonna work. Anyway, put a little Tamiya red brown in a bottle and added a couple drops of gunmetal for a metallic look and then added flat black to darken. That looked ok. Then I misted on some Metalizer burnt iron and then Metalizer exhaust.  The pic doesn't do it justice but I'm happy with it. Will have to do a little drybrushing and burnishing but in the end it should be just about right.

Then it was on to the next stage of weathering. I'd said before I was thinking about doing an overspray on the whole airframe. Wasn't quite sure how I was gonna go about it. Decided that since weathering was in stages it may as well be in layers too. So, I mixed up some really thin MM enamel dark sea gray and misted it over everything except the radome.

Just enough to get a little color on it. A little heavy in a spot or two. Then I held my breath for a few minutes(and not because of the odor), took a brush and dipped it in enamel thinner and proceeded to drip and streak it all over that gray mist coat.

Looks pretty rough huh? lol I was freakin' a bit but what the hell, I wanted it to look used. But, after my little decal fiasco I already had some idea of what would happen once I shot some clear on it. Some of you may too.

Not exactly what I wanted but close. I'll refine it next time. I hope. Still got most of the streaking/faded effect I wanted and the next couple of steps will make it better. These birds use thrust reversers and blow a lot of soot back on the vertical stab and very top and bottom of the airframe. I'm gonna repeat this process on the spine with some black and then spray Metalizer exhaust after the final clear. It shouldn't be long now...

Wingman, the weathering on your Tornado looks great. Yes  I admire your willingness to try a new technique. Bow Down  It turned out nice.  I tried to mix MM enamals with mineral spirits before and the paint got real grainy.  It must be a compatability issue.

As I posted before, I got 2 of the camo colors on the wings and stabs.  I will spray the Euro 1 gray tonight if I can, then post the fully camo'd wings and stabs.  I could just wait until they are finished but where's the fun in that. Big Smile

Wingman & Don: Great job! Here is my finished "raven" pics. I added the Testors "dull coat" overall after the acrylic wash and decals. I am pretty happy with the overall look. I had to start over on the Dio base, as I wasn't happy with the overall look! I also added the red letters with a permanent pen (decals that were "wiped off" during the wash process!.

Tony, nice transformation from some pretty rough looking weathering to a more subtle effect.  Never had a doubt did you that it would turn out so well, eh?  Kudos for trying something new and showing us all how it all went.  It's gratifying when a new approach works well.  I'm enjoying watching your work.

Kevin,  starting the strategic camo, eh?  Those wings are monsters, aren't they?  What paint are you using; MM enamels or something else?  Keep track of your paint comsumption so that I'll know what I need to have on hand when I begin.  You're the guinea pig, man!!  Big Smile  Also, check out my most recent post; I'm running into an issue with the wings that I'm not sure from your photos whether you have dealt with or not.

Travis,  aesthetically the F-111 reminds me of the A-10 Warthog; at first glance, you say "gee that's and ugly plane".  But then it grows on you.  Very nice job.  Any armament to add?  Also, post a photo of your completed model (or wait until the dio is done) for me to show off on the front page.  Remmber to collect your badge when your finished.
