Dr Win

She got any single sisters pepper? :)

Nope - unfortunately she's an only child ... she's the 'boy' her Dad wanted, so he taught her how to hunt and fish, enjoy baseball, ride a horse, drive a tractor and be patient ... a jewel, to be sure ...Wink

Snow and black ice?  Crap, that front is heading my way.  I hope it doesn't ice here.  Isn't Garland NE Dallas?  Thankfully, the cold fronts tend to weaken a bit by the time they hit San Antonio.  You aren't too far where Squadron is either I think?  Have you gone there? Cheers,

Greg - we're about 13 miles NE of Dallas ... Yes, Squadron is close - 'bout 15 miles or so, but I've never been there ... I believe they only are open to the public just a few days of the year ...

I just drove home from McKinney - about 39 miles north of here and it took me 3 hours ++ ... man, it's cold and the talking heads on TV said it's going to be in the 5 - 9 range tomorrow night ... and that's with no wind chill factored in ...

How I miss home - San Diego ... talked with my daughter a few minuites ago and its 72 out there ...Cool

Again, I want to complement everyone building for this GB ... all your work is aces and I'm learning as we go ... I'll be posting pictures very soon and ask for suggestions, comments and criticisms ...

Thanks,

pepper

Greg, trust me on this that LA-11 has caused me pain for weeks and its not done yet. I have to rub down some of the varnish as I slightly over sprayed in places and it shows! Still have the decals to do which just look nasty. I think there's a line between perseverance and masochism and with this I crossed it. Also noticed today that the wings are askew. The port wing is leading the starboard, not apparent from a normal viewing angle but I know its there now and its going to annoy me. One to replace when a better kit comes out.

The Damiler Mk2 is motoring along, the hull and turret are now in green the wheels are painted black, I'll deal with the hubs tomorrow and get a coat of varnish onto the hull as well. Have started on the Dingo, going to need a fair bit of work - its the ACE kit and has all the joys of short run Eastern European kits. The main problem is going to be the decals. White stars are easy enough to source, but correct unit/vehicle markings for Korean war 27/29 brigade & Commonwealth division AFVs' and soft skins just don't exist. There is a gaping hole in the market for an after market sheet. Anyone else hitting this problem? Tons of stuff for WW2, even a 72nd sheet for Suez but nothing at all for Korea. Forgotten war even in miniature...

Lookinf forward to seeing the Marine figures come to life , Mac

Nice work on the LA-11 Andy as well as the armour too Yes

Stikpusher is nearly finished his Centurion and Andrew is making good progress on his as well .

Hopfully shortly we should have some nice finished armour builds on display .

I started on the ROK RF-4C and F-4E ;

Fujimi supply nice decals for the cockpit ;

The fuselage and wings fit without any issues ;

Along with the two ROK Phantoms there's three USAF Vietnam birds , all five are part of the Phantom GB ;

I figured since I was doing two for the ROK , I may as well add the others in as well Whistling

Today  I'll fit the intakes to the F-4's , glue the wings on the A-10 and F-16's and my modern Korean fleet is coming along nicely .

Well, she'd just text me non-stop anyways!

Dr Win, your La-11 is looking good.  It sounds like you have a lot more perseverence than me!  I seem to complicate my own builds and make them more challenging than they should be.

Mac, that is a nice set of Marine figures.

Cheers,

Greg

Hoo haw, ain't that the truth ? ... but mine's a keeper - she loves planes, trains and automobiles, real and model and shows guests the latest builds or projects ...

In fact, she bought our house (for a lot of reasons, of course) because it had a 12 x 20 steel building in back, plumbed and wired and she thought it would make a great place for my train layout and model-building workshop ...Bow Down

Because of spinal surgery, she came to TX 18 months before I did (we're from San Diego) and I had to stay behind to keep our son in school that last year, then sell our San Diego house and get released by the surgeons ...

And she's an 'ace' wingshot with a 12 ga. shotgun ...

So now,, back to work on Project Reefer and am gonna stay inside today and out of the snow ...

No painting today as it's snowing ... we had 3 days of 75's and woke up to snow and black ice this morning ... guess I'll keep pluggin' away on other models today ...

OK Doc, your builds have been updated! Keep up the great work. The La is coming along nicely, and ya just gotta love those kits that fly together after a challenging build! It helps to recharge the batteries.

Pepper I wish more wifes, girlfriends or partners were like yours. My girlfriend doesn't understand why I have this hobby, at least with not living together she isn't on my case about it. Though she did like the 32nd scale Tiger Moth I made as part of her birthday present (she been for a pleasure flight in one the year before we met and I made her a model of the one she flew in).

An old collegue at a railway museum I used to volunteer at came up with a memorable (if slightly inappropriate) comment once  - we were standing on a summers afternoon watching an 1879 locomotive we had spent the last couple of weeks repainting being pulled out of its shed gleaming like a new pin, generally admiring our handywork when he turned to those present and said "women are very much like steam engines, they look good, smell good, cost you an arm and a leg, frequently cause you pain and you always want a go on someone elses..." How his wife put up with him I'll never know!

Anyways, an update on builds, the LA-11 is nearing completion and I shall be mightily glad when its finished. There is only so much polishing a turd that you can do. All it needs is decals onto the gloss coat when its set, then satin coat, glue on the remaining transparencies and peel off the parafilm on the canopy.

Also completed a couple of Italeri 'alto zero' M7B1s'. One is going on ebay and the other has been done as a Korean war one.

Stik, for my need entry into the group build can you put me down for a Hasegawa Damiler MK2 armoured car and a Damiler Dingo, both in 1/72nd. Ive already got the armoured car into primer, it just flew together in an hour, sheer joy after the LA-11!

Hooray!!! Great to see everyone getting lots of stuff done. Been away a bit myself trying to get stuff finished up. Finished off two GBs (Early Jets and Ho-229) so now I'm concentrating on this GB, Bear's Nightfighter and my B-29 for the NM.

Base is starting to look like asphalt, just need to add the grass areas. Most of the civilian figures are done, now need to paint all the detail stuff. Funny how much trouble I had making a pair of heels till I figured out I could cut the ends off a round toothpick for the pointy ends. Surprise

Well the past 24 hours has been good for my Centurion. I painted the rubber tires on the road wheels and return rollers, the bare steel on the sprockets, idler wheels, and retunrn rollers that had no tires. Then it was a wash of Raw Umber over the inner face of the tracks to tone them down. And then some touchupsof areas needing it of the Bronze Green. Once everythign dried, the tracks were fitted on. Now I wanna reinforce them in place with glue, gget the outer faces of the tracks painted and it will be the home stretch. She's getting there finally!

 what kind of Phantom get the Texas flags on your decal sheet?  I have a Hase F-4E that would be cool to do in a Texas scheme.

Hey Greg:

Probably Texas ANG I'm thinking ... and the Tigercat is just one of how many drone controllers ? ... in the old days, all the target aircraft were flown by controller aircraft and to keep things simple, they were usually of the same type ... that way, there wouldn't be performance differences raising their ugly head ...

And another 'drone' to consider is the Boeing 720 that the Feds flew into a ground target out in the desert to test a new fuel fire retardant ...

Ha ha John!  Wives are over rated anyways.  When I got married this last time, she took over half my closet for starters (more now) and started "organizing" my stuff.  My house was already clean and very well decorated, but she's ocd, and can't leave stuff alone.  They are expensive too!  She'd kill me if she knew half the model stuff I had.  My locker at work looks like a hobby shop shelf.  I should complain, she keeps me in line, and I probably need it.  I was a compulsive ebay buyer, and she has cured me of that.  And she isn't bad to look at either.

Thanks for the book info too.  I will pick up those books then.  It is just frustrating to order stuff, and it turns out to be useless except for entertainment value.  The A-20 in Action book I got is just that.  By the way, what kind of Phantom get the Texas flags on your decal sheet?  I have a Hase F-4E that would be cool to do in a Texas scheme.

Pepper, that Tigercat is what I was thinking about.  Pretty cool.

Cheers,

Greg

 A "wife" would never allow such things I suppose ???????????

Hey John:

Mine does ... she sez she'd rather have me working a model at the kitchen table (when it's coooold outside) or at my workbenches, than be out foolin' around at some bar ...Cool ... she encourages me all the time and is most knowledgeable about what I'm building ...

I think I have got the decals sorted out for two ROK Phantoms , a RF-4C and F-4E using Hi-decals F-4 decal Sheet ,

I will replace the hi-viz ROK insignia's with some low-viz ones from a couple of KF-16C kits and I'll be building these two Fujimi 1/72 Phantom kits ,

I alway's get really excited about new builds , so I'll start today with some interior painting to the tubs and fuselage insides .

I now have half completed builds stacked up on the floor around the living room , I'm going to try and finish something this weekend , hopfully some armor , It's a little awkward tip toeing around the room in fear of falling head first into a nearly completed build , being a bachelor , I guess model aircraft building can get a little out of control ; A "wife" would never allow such things I suppose ???????????

BTW, the F-7F Tigercat drone controller aircraft  is a 2 seater with the second cockput located above and behind the original ... the drone controller sat in that cockpit with everything needed to fly the drone ... the first pilot flew the controller aircraft ... the canopy for it came from F-8 Bearcats ... it's a weird looking beast ...

Here's the Tigercat drone controller ...

Pepper, that is a cool idea.  I have an old, and I mean old Revell F-4B and the only decals I can find are either Navy or drone.  How about drone controller aircraft?  I think there is a F7F tigercat controller version?

Hey Guys:

Let's give it some thought ... I've also seen controller aircraft - F-7F included - for just about every airplane ever used as a target drone ...

I've no idea about decals as this thought just occurred to me today and I've not researched decalsI but from what I see in pictures, most of the unusual aspects of the drones revolve around paint schemes ... most everything else probably can be had from your decal stash ...

Anyhoo, let's give it some thought ...

Hi Greg ;

Ginter's Skyknight book is good , all the photo's in the book are B&W .

Sadly there are no close-ups of engines , access panels , exhaust , wing folds etc ;

Which was quite disappointing Sad

I could be wrong but I think I saw a 1/72 Hasegawa Avenger kit for the JMSDF which looked a bit like those HEDRON Ambulance Avengers . the kit was over $60 , waaaaaay to expensive for me .

I spend so much time browsing Hannants web site , I can't remember exactly what type of Avenger it was ...sorry .

I have the Warbird Tech series , vol.13 Douglas A-1Skyraider and AD Skyraider vol.67 in detail and scale .

Both books are excellent for info on the Skyraider .

On another note, John, do you have the Ginter Skyknight book?  I'm thinking about ordering it, but I wanted your opinion on it.  By the way, do you have any good photos of the tail pipes?  I'm starting to put it together in my mind where I want to go with the Skyknight.  I didn't plan ahead for my P-70, and it has caused me to slow down at times, as if I don't build slow enough!  Also, I need to order a Skyraider book for my AD-4N conversion I want to do.  I would also love to build one of the USMC HEDRON Avengers that had night duty and ambulance duty.  I've never seen such an animal in kit form.

Cheers,

Greg

Great idea Pepper .

I have some 1/72 QF-104 and QF-4S decals in the stash for a couple of future target drone builds . I would like to find some for a QF-8 Crusader , they had a great color scheme on them .

Not a problem Pepper, there's two or three at the store.~~~  I'll let you know as soon as I lay hands on them.

I'd certainly appreciate you keeping an eye out for me ... the only kits I see here are either Aggressors or Alaska ANG units ...

Now, another topic ...

I was looking at photos on Google last night and thought this might be a good Group Build (although I'm not volunteering to lead it :-) ...

How 'bout a GB on 'TARGET DRONES' ? ... not the drones like the Predator,  but real deal aircraft that have been and are now used as target drones ...

The variety was amazing, going back to WW II prop fighters all the way up to F-16's (can you believe that one ?) ... Google 'Aircraft Target Drones'  Images (upper left hand corner of the Google toolbar) for a sampling ...

In just the first row of pictures that come up, there's an F-4 Phantom, F-100 Super Sabre and an F-86 SabreJet ... there are also drones from England and, and , and ...

Any thoughts ?

pepper

PS I know that everyone is already swamped with projects, but his might well be low key ...

Not sure if that's what you ordered, but I can lay hands on a KF-16.  I don't recall the price, abou $14.oo (USD) I seem to recall.  It's a special production kit put out by Academy.  I also happened upon their 1/72 scale Stryker kit that was a special production (didn't realize it was at the time).  Got home and opened it up to find resin stowage!  It was same price as the regular kit.  If you're really interested, lemme know!  The shipping can't be that danged much, and I owe you for the prop.  :)

Thank's Andy ,

I sent you an email .
