Hi stik:

Somehow, my F-84 image disappeared from the front page ... I probably deleted something causing that to happen ...

If you don't mind, here's an image that will be suitable to replace the lost one ...

Thanks,

pepper

PS Have started the P-80 and will post photos tomorrow ...

One more question ...

There had been some talk of allowing modern aircraft to be included in this GB, such as a ROK  F4 Phantom ...

What was ever decided about that ? ... can do or no go this time around ? ...

Thanks,

pepper

If the F-4 is in current service as of the beginning of this build, it is a go. If you are making an older one, no go. So, markings for 2010 thru now will work.

I was able to show 3 squadrons still flying the F-4E and one flying the F-4D, according to Wiki

New to forums so I'll be quick... If you can get enough interest into the IDF or Arab Israeli Wars GBs, I'll be in definately with at least 5 IAF planes (!!!) I just love their camo, planes, combat record... Anyway sounds good to me and my Mustang for this GB will be on the bench in a few weeks, bummer my AB is broken Crying

P.S If it is Arab Israeli (I know it's early days but WTH) would Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi etc. be allowed?

Cheers

Still only a concept at this point and  feelers won't go out until next year. But yes, Arab includes any aircraft flown in combat or armor (or ships) used in combat against the Israelis in the wars I listed. Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian, Iraqi, Algerian, Libyan, etc...

I've a couple of Israeli models in my stash and I like the idea. I'll have to wait and see how things go though, I've a pile of stuff I need to work though and with starting my own attempted Japanese subject GB in Sept. (plug. plug!) I've got a too many irons in the fire.

I'M HOME!  Big Smile

The land of real BBQ, sausage that tastes right, and the big PX!  Was able to glance at the kits waiting for me:  The Matchbox F-86A has the wedge to the canopy windscreen, but the railings are so thick it obscures it.  I'll pass on rebuilding the canopy for now.  The Fujimi RF-86F looks nice, different method of building from the instructions, but I may just take the add-on parts and make a RF-86A with a second Matchbox kit that's in the post.  The Dragon LVT(A)-4 is AWESOME looking!  Can't wait to build it and place alongside the Milicast for comparison.  And I picked up a Tamiya F-84 as well.  I couldn't find the KW version but purchased the Thunderbirds kit.  It comes with all the weapons (including the guns and poseable access panel) and the whole thing is prechromed!  I'm going to have fun with this, I think.  One thing's for sure, it's gonna be danged shiny when I get done with it.  Other projects in the mail wer a 1/72 DC-9 that's going to be a C-9A Mightingale, books on the F-84 and MiG-15, as well a vacffor B-36D with fuselage pieces for a GRB-36D...  This and an Italeri F-84K mod are going to make my other Monogram B-36 into a very interesting FICON build!  I also snagged soe kits to (maybe) take back to Korea with me:  DHC U-1 Otter, MD Longtom to convert into an 8" gun, MMonogram HU-16, DML LCM-3, Hasegawa Neptune to be converted, and my Airfix Catalina.  I'm still working to get y old desktop computer internet accessible, it's gonna be a task, that's for sure, but I do have a working laptop her with me, so I can access the web when I really have to.

Cheers from Minnesota, guys!  Toast

Draken Andy: Good to see you were able to make it back to the States without any problems. Funny you don't think about mudslides as much as say tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc but they're just as deadly. I was about to ask if you'd brought back a supply of kim-che with you but I remember you said you hate the stuff.

Certainly all my friends here are invited to join my Japanese GB, I'll be posting it late this month with a official start date on Sept first. Most of the interest I've had is Second World War Japanese aircraft so I'll probably limit it to that though I'll ask around when I put the post up if anyone is interested in modern aircraft or other Japanese subjects. And Stikpusher if you don't mind I may end up pestering you with a bunch of stupid questions on how to do a GB before this is all over.

It seems I've been buying instead of building kits this past week , I spotted these two 1/72 scale jeeps on-line at a hobby store near me ...

A Dodge WC-51 ,

M6 Jeep ;

Were these two vehicles used in the Korean War and forgive me for getting slightly off topic but were WC-51 and /or M6 jeeps used by the Israeli's around 1948-56 ?

I did search on google for some pic's of early IDF vehicles but it is a bit difficult to tell what type of jeep the Israeli's used back then .

Andy , I'm glad you made it back home safe and sound , the kits you mentioned sound great too

Cliff , in my 1/72 scale stash of 750 plus kits , I only have a JGDF AH-1S Cobra and a UH-60JA Hawk .

Two modern helicopters only Sad .....

John: I'm going to let people vote in the GB if they want to allow modern stuff or just WWII only. So we'll see how it goes. Still you've got enough Korean War and Israeli stuff there to keep you busy for awhile even at the rate you build. At least finish enough models to clear your bathroom sink for use! Wink

Heya Helo!

Of the two 'jeeps' you mentioned, only the WC-51 was used.   Both as a basis for the Ambulace put out by Academy, and as a general hauling vehicle.  The M-6 GMC was no longer in use, the 37mm gun being obsolete by the time of the KW.  Having said that, if you've got the C-119C from Italeri, then you've got the WC-51 truck, it's included as a cargo item!  I was going to load my WC-51 with a few 55gal drums of liquid and put the canvas on it.

Post KW, the WC-51's were made in a slightly different and smaller form by Toyota in order to help expand the Japanese industry and economy and exported all over Asia.  If you check my Photobucket pics of the Korean War Memorial Museum I've included one or two pics of the Toyota version.  The RoK Army didn't accept any of them until 1954, but they wer in use by the UN (USA) forces during the war itself.

Just got my Detail and Scale book on the F-111 today, put it with my ESCI/ERTL/AMT-Revell F-111B kitbash project.  Also, found where my wife put my non-KW GB kits.  A few Trumpeter S-tanks and some other kits.  I may just build that danged Supermarine Walrus even though it wasn't involved in the KW.  Also found my THREE (I only remember ever buying 1) Japanese two man subs.  Ther's only two of the actual subs in the world on display, and I was able to photograph the one on Guam while I was there!  Checked through all of my kits at home her that went through the flood back in April (we only got a half inch of water in the basement when the sump pup died) and found one sheet of decals damaged.  No issue, it was for the AMT/ESCI/ERTL/Italeri B-52H and I've already got a different decal sheet for it.  And the cats and nephews haven't destroyed any of the built kits in the basement either.  That's good!

I've also got an interview (basically a formality) for a job in Korea for the next year and need to start my FBI Criminal Background Check.  I also have a plethora of doctors' appointments and such this week.  And since my desktop computer here at home took a dump, I've also gone out and bought a new laptop computer to take back to Korea with me.

Your dead right Cliff , I have so many kits it's not funny . I have the space to build new display cabinets but I keep spending my money on kits .

Andy , thanks for the info on the WC-51 ; I forgot Italeri supply one with their C-119 kit . I started a flying boxcar by airbrushing the fuselage insides and have glued the windows in place but that's all I've done so far . I found a pic in my USAF in Korea book of a C-119 air dropping a heavy load ...

Here's one of a jeep in Korea ;

Mmmmm , maybe a Hasegawa dump truck next time I order some paint from the LHS ;

This looks like a never ending job ....

Slightly off topic again but of all things I found a web site here in my neck of the woods that has a publication called Israeli Military Vehicles 1948-1998 The First Fifty Years .

The web site is www.mheaust.com.au

I sent away yesterday to Mouse House Enterprises for a copy of the book , so I'm looking forward to it arriving in the mail shortly .

I did find a pic in one of my other IDF reference books of what looks to be one of those Academy Ambulances being used by the Israeli's ;

Here I go again Cliff , an Ambulance and  Dump Truck kits on the horizon , perhaps one of those inexpensive Academy A6M5c Zero's as well ?

Gamera, no worries about questions for me about running a GB.  This is only my second one, but I feel more at ease about running one now...

Helo, I was beaten to the answer about the M6 GMC. That was one of the original US Army Tank Destroyers in WWII and was phased out of US Army service after the North African Campaign when it was found to be inadequete in its' role.  It did see service till the end of the war in Free French service....Hmm

Well I have tightened up a few loose ends here now that I have some time off from work and some family issues behind me, so my Centurion will be done soon...

Hi Stik ;

I did see this pic in Squadron Armor in Korea book ;

I wonder why they didn't try and use the M6 jeep insted of the one in the pic above ?

I also came across this pic of some Bren Gun Carriers ;

Airfix do one in 1/76 scale , so I picked a couple of them up and started on one this afternoon ;

Some airbrushing olive green to the parts ;

The little vehicle is quite basic and makes for a quick build ;

I'll touch up some of the paintwork tomorrow and add some black wash to the tracks .

Looking forward to seeing your Centurion , Stik .

John: If you want to do the Zero, I'd be glad to have you. I intend to post the thread here on the GBs forum for sign-ups in about two weeks with the GB starting in Sept. You and anyone else can jump in later of course.

Draken: Sounds like you've got this in the bag- still let me wish you good luck.

Stikpusher: Looking forward to seeing the Centurian. I'm running out of little metal bits to glue to the M46 so I guess that means I'm almost done with assembly. Hopefully photos soonish.

Good Morning All from VERY hot Texas - 112.6 yesterday ...

Liz and I sent our condolences, stikpusher, on your loss ... seems that such is always a huge surprise even though months and years are spent getting ready ... I've been there and know exactly what's happenng for you ...

Home again from the hospital with a huge 'drain' thing sewn into my chest ... makes it hard to do anything right-handed, but I'm trying ... docs had to put in a central line to flood my bloodstream with meds, saline and steroids and punctured my right lung twice and broke a rib while 'installing' the line ... the procedure is normally done under full anesthesia but considering the situation, the medicos did it sans anesthesia ... ouch !! is all that I can say ...

I finally started the Shooting Star and will have photos up over the weekend ... so far, so good and I'm pleasantly surprised at how clean the kit is, even considering it's age ...

I'm game for any new GB's this group would like to do, either now or down the road ... some great friendships have been created in this one and i believe these GB's are as much about the participants as they are about the modeling ...

And with that, I've got to sign off and drain out the fluid buildup in the doodad on my chest ...

Yo, Helo!

Good on ya for the Bren carrier!  I did two of them so far.  And both have been stolen!  I'm going to go ahead and get another at SOME point, but I'm not too worried about it yet.  Apparently I didn't get pictures of it up onto photobucket.  Nor on my website.  DANG!  Now I HAVE to buy another...

Hey Pepper, OUCH- I've been complaining about it hitting around 97 around here. Please take it easy, after the number the doctors did on you I think you deserve it. Punctured your right lung twice and broke a rib- Censored. And without anesthesia, I'd have been screaming like a little girl. Still it's good to have you back with us and best wishes for a swift and safe recovery.

Looking forward to seeing the P/F-80 when you get the photos up!

Thank you to one and all for your kind words regarding my mother's passing. It took me almost a week to be able to do anythign at my hobby bench to do more than sit and stare at stuff there. Then I realized she was the one who got me started here. She bought the first models I ever built (and many more thru the years), even though it would be dad who would be the one to guide my initial building years. My model building mojo has returned and things will show up on this site regularly for now and hopefully in this thread in the next few days. Gotta get that FW-190 from the 99.9% to over the finish line today.

Helo, the M6 was just a modified Dodge WC series weapons carrier. Its bigger than the jeep, and I can not comment on their realtive comparative mobility charecteristics. The jeeps were standard throughout the Army for all the R&I platoons so it makes sense not to swap out. I do like the Bren Carrier. Great little piece of equipment. I dont think the 6 Pdrs were still in service when the Korean War broke out. Its' American cousin had been replaced by then.

Pepper... I second the "Ouch" comment. Between the heat and the medical procedure I would have been sedated and in restraints or in jail and there would have been several medical personal needing treatment of their own... Get well quick my friendToast

Draken, you gotta get a new Carrier..they are small and inexpensive, and since your thief has been nabbed, third one has to be a charm...Wink

Ok, time to get to the workbence here...Stick out tongue

Stik- Your mother is just like my mother... I was sick with chicken pox and she brought home a snap on Army jeep kit to keep me entertained.  She knew I was into army stuff... that's what got me into this horrible addiction.

Now your mother can follow all of your builds from where ever she is...

Guys- Great works everybody!!!  I still am hoping to enter my M8 Greyhound as second build of course next year as I already have three builds maybe four lined up. Stick out tongue

My thanks to everyone:

Docs from the hospital called me late this afternoon and said I'd had a  reaction to a brown recluse spider bite ... reaction my as* ... I've never been so sick in my entire life, but all is well now - the drain in my chest is working and model building (or sorta kinda building) is good for my head as well as my hands ...

This is a great bunch of folks and I'm proud to be a part of this GB ... anytime anyone wants to start another, please count me in and I hope I won't be seeing the docs anytime soon ... my lung, chest and ribs are all saying 'NAY' :-) ...

Please keep up the wonderful work and commentary ... it does this old f*rt good to see and read such ...

According to the Dragon website for dragonmodelsusa.com, the armored 1/4 ton truck set is due out this month.  My LHS already has one on pre-order for me (I just got off the phone with him).  It is supposed to retail for less than $20 US (if the USD doesn't implode).  It is supposed to come with a bunch of extra options for armament etc.  I figure if my wife gets mad at me for getting armor models, I am going to have message DP, since he is the one who let loose the contagious armor bug!

Really, thanks DP and others for helping me expand my horizons.  I am enjoying my LVT and Easy 8 a lot.  By the way, converting the LVT-(a)4 to an (a)5 is a lot more involved than I thought.  Not bad, just a lot of little things to watch out for.  I am in the process of making a diagram of what is needed. I am also going to include photos of my wip.  Most of the mods will be obvious, as they are in white plastic from Evergreen.

Hey guys, be careful out there.  Armor bug is one thing, Brown Recluse another!  Theuns, and Helo, I have been watching "Shark Week" on the Discovery Channel here, and if I ever visit either of your respective countries, the only swimming I will do, will be in a pool!

Finally found an RF-80 too!

Have a good weekend guys!

Cheers,

Greg

Hang in there Pepper ; Your certainly doin' it tough .

Greg , we do get lots of shark sightings around all the beaches , pretty much year round . lot's of creepy crawly's as well . Funnel web spiders are the worst  followed by Red Backs , there not very big but have a nasty bite and like to hide under outdoor BBQ equipment and the lip of pot plants and watering cans . I can testify from personal experiance on the last item . There's Huntsman spiders as well , which love the indoors . they can be a fair size and I'm buggered how they manage to get inside ?

Thanks for the heads up on Dragon's future release of some vehicles , I haven't opened the LVT-4 as yet but it sounds like your making good progress on yours and I look forward to seeing the extra scratch-building and nice score on the RF-80

As for me I spent the day fitting the tracks to the T-34 Tanks and started fitting the final pieces in place ; As well as getting some other armor builds close to finishing .

It's about 12.30 am and I have the T-34/85 , T-34 Recovery Vehicle , M-24 Chaffee and Bren Carrier decaled and ready for a final coat of clear flat tomorrow . Following closely behind is the Churchill Mk 7 and two Churchill bridge layers ...

Hopfully by this time tomorrow , Ill be posting finish pic's of all seven pieces of armor , I hit the sack now !

Good looking armor John!  You have your own "ground war" going on!

My plans to air conditon my garage hit a snag.  The unit I bought from a friend doesn't blow cold.  If I knew how to use smileys, I 'd use one that is crying!  I need to get this figured out.  With no end in sight of over 100 degrees days, I needed that a/c.  Hopefully, my friend will make good on it.

Cheers,

Question for the group:  On my old computer (which has just kinda rolled over and licked itself) I had an RSS feed for this group.  I can't find the link to do that anymore.  Does anyone know where it is, or how I do that?

In KWGB new, I've found an old Frog 1/72 F-86 in my stash!  I'll throw that puppy together when I get back to Korea.  It'll look sweet next to the rest of my much higher quality kits.  I've also snagged yet another Matchbox F-86A and have a line on a Heller T-33 for the RT-33!  This will be sweet if it works out.  I also received my F-84 and F-111 Detail and Scale books in the mail.  The only issue with them is their age, while the data on the aircraft has and always will be the same, there's a lot of newer kits on the market since these volumes were published.  I also snagged a 4+ publication on the MiG-15.  SAH-HUWEET!  Tons of close up detail pics of the MiG in action and posed.  I'm going to do one of my KP's in the overall NMF, one in the late KW camouflage, and my DML/Hobbycraft kit will be the USAF bird.  That should be a nice trio of birds!

Stopped by the LHS and picked up some evergreen sheet plastic for in Korea, as well as a plastruct rod for the barrel of the 208mm gun that I'm going to convert from my M-2 Long Tom.  They used the same carriage and mount, and the breech and recoil mechanism were nearly identical.  I also picked up some paints and ordered some Testors' enamel brush-on dullcoat.  Had to order a box of twelve...  That's the only way he can get it.  I now have several lifetime supplies of it.

A trip to Harbor Freight was also productive.  Picked up a motortool with case and accessories for $8 and a separate case of accessories for $14.  I bought the equivalent of a Badger 250 for $6 and dang near got an air compressor for $70.  I've got two more weeks to get the compressor if I feel I really want it.

I may need a THIRD suitcase to go back to Korea with me, at this rate...  Stick out tongue
