Andrew- Looks like Buddy has got you sorted out on the sidewinders.  I looked through my reference photos, and couldn't find any better than his.

Sorry I have not been around chaps!  My computer is acting up lately, and I am forced to do most of my Internet browsing on my Smartphone.  Unfortunately, these forums (unlike others) do not support these phones.  So, I will only be able to post here occasionally while visiting a friend so I can use their computer.

Christian- Lovely work on that one, especially the base!  Those carrier deck displays are some of the best I have seen, and the animated figures really add to the look.  Well done, I added your photo to page 1!

Sorry for taking it down to the wire. I've been done for a few days but I haven't had time to post these.  If you're curious about the base, my build thread can be found here: /forums/t/137064.aspx

If you look closely at this picture, you can see that Hasegawa made a mistake when printing the red tail decal on the right side.  It is "001" instead of "100".  I guess they were in a hurry on their computer and just mirrored the other side.

Thanks a million Lewbud. Do you know what color the tip of the missile is. If so, I will be good to go.

Fly-in-hi, thanks.  I will try that.  I used this kit to try both the tamiya and squadron putty.  I think the squadron is the best.  That being said do still have some flaws to to fix, and some areas that I did not get good coverage.  I was wondering what you use for an applicator.  I use a toothpick and my squadron tool to apply the putty, then use a 400 grit and wet sand then fallow up with a 600 grit.  I still seem to struggle with excess putty.  I will post some more pick once I go back over it.  Thanks again.

Hey Jarhead, are you priming your parts before you paint them?  It looks you are not in your pics.

It's ok if you don't in most cases but I'd recommend that you do it for 2 reasons.  First, a primer coat helps the base colors stick to the model a little better.  Second, the primer coat helps you identify any surface flaws before you go on the the base colors.

My personal favorite is the Tamiya Grey Surface primer.  It's hard to find at the moment because of some labeling issues (or maybe because of the Tsunami) but when it becomes available again I'd grab some.

Here is a pic of a training Sidewinder I shot last year.  Hope it helps.

Thanks guys.  The bombs are here and being pained now so it should be done very soon.

Dupes, those are scratch built covers.  If you go back a page or two you'll see some pics that I posted and an explanation of how I made them.  They were pretty easy to do.

Nice Hornet Fly-n-hi! I await to see the finished pics. You have great scratchbuilding skills.

Hey, does anybody know how training sidewinders are colored? My F-18 used training sidewinders, but I cannot find any relieable references to them. Anything will help.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Fly-n-hi - that looks sharp! Big Smile

Are those scratched FOD/exhaust covers? Or whose aftermarket stuff?

Fly-in-hi that is a great looking hornet.  I don't know if mine will look anywhere as good but so far I am happy with it.  I am posting some update photos.  They are some pre paint photos and the tails.  I decided to paint the green instead of using the decals, I think it will work.   I will post the final result when the kit is done.  I have allot more to talk about with this kit, but I will weight and see what you all think.

I don't have the best camera so I won't post some of the others.  I would love to hear some feedback.

Thanks arki.  I had to repaint or touch them up about 3 times each to get them just right.  Should get the bombs any day now so hopefully I'll have her official completed.

Sweet!  Nice work, has that suitably dirty look for a line jet.  YesBow Down  I'm quite jealous of your red gear door edges as well, nice and straight.  Mine, not so much.  Whistling

Well done!

Still slogging away on decals on my end.  Modern aircraft always take longer to do.

Ok folks, here she is...my 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18C.

I'm not gonna call her done because I still have to attach the boarding ladder and I'm still waiting on some weapons (because some genius at Hasegawa decided to leave them out of their kits) but the plane itself is about as done as she's gonna get.  The canopy may look a little crooked in some pics but that's because it's loosely attached.  I won't glue it on until I've attached the bombs.

My picture studio is my kitchen table so please forgive the so so quality.

...and my "Fly-n-hi" effect:

...and this was the kit:

Hopefully I can get the weapons soon.  All I have left are the bombs, ladder, RBF flags, and seeker head covers for the AIM-9s.

Daywalker, thanks.

They were totally easy to do.  I have them finished except for the paint.  In fact the plane is basically finished so I'll get some pics up in the next day or two.

Great idea on the seeker head covers, funny no manufacturer (AFAIK) has ever supplied them in a kit.  Not much in the AM either for that matter.

Great idea!

I'm going to scratch build some seeker head covers for the AIM-9s.  I took some Aves Apoxie and sculpted them onto the missles.  Here's how they look so far:

Next I'll cut a small styrene piece to attach the REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT decal and paint them yellow.  Piece of cake.

Ah, that's true.  It would look blue on blue to you.  Blue on grey with yellow accents, Rampagers CAG scheme.

Who's decals do you already have in your possession?

Me?  If so, nope no centennial scheme.

I believe only Fightertown Decals has released decals for the centennial schemes.  Both TwoBobs and Afterburner are delayed.

Ooooogh...don't remember that. I hope it was while ago? Heh. To my colorblind eyes, that looked like a blue-on-blue paint scheme. Here's hoping you bang one out soon!

Fly-in-hi, nice progress.  While some complain about the boring low-viz gray schemes, I have always liked the stealthy look.

Yes

Thanks.  I just had the urge to do a standard lo-viz line jet.  That's mostly what you'd see on a carrier deck anyway, right?

I'm trying to make it look weathered and faded.  So far the weathering is looking pretty good...I think.  I'll get some pics up soon.  I won't be able to get to it until Sat, though.

Good to know.  I did get your post on the photos and I should be able to post some this weekend.   I am supposed to be getting my metal etched parts for my cockpit tomorrow and I will be able to show some real progress.  Thanks again.
