Island @ 90%

Hasegawa kit is old, so only going to detail the essentials. Catawalks below flightdeck at bow and stern, then some railings will likely complete the body work.

Next will be working on the airwing.

Scbuilder and Potchip welcome aboard with your bilds.  Potchip I like the WIP pics the PE parts will go along ways with the island.

Scbuilder welcome back to the Hobby.  Look forward to seeing Prinz Eugen.

Final thought - by any chance do those protrusions serve as locators for the included stands?  They would serve to place the stands in the most stable position on the hull.

That could be a very good possibility.  You could allways assemble the stands and tape together the hull and do a test fit to see how it all looks.  If it looks ok and its not interfering with the propellers then i would say leave em.

Well my latest activites have been to put the Yamato on back burner and start work on Dragons 1/350 CG Ticonderoga (As my prime reason for joing the GB is to finally complete both these ships I thought it would be quicker and easier to get this build done first and out of the way as theres no telling how long the Yamato will take). I'm building this one as  CG CG 48 USS Yorktown, I've had a start of this kit before and got it to about 40% done. Theres alot of warping in which is where I've had alot of issues.

Anyways first pic is where I got up previous, The black watrline is way to thick and I want to reputty/sand some hull issues so I'll be stripping ALL the paint off soon to do that.

Next two pics are some areas that have required a little putty to "help" along, what I've been doing the last week or so.

Ok current stage, did some more building this afternoon and tonight.

Thanks a bunch... I do have to make a correction to my ship for some reason I had Prinz Eugen on my mind when I am actually doing the WWI  German battleship Koenig.... massive brain cramp on my part...

Well, all this may be "clear as mud but, it covers the ground". A couple of pix will show it all and, they are on the way... The promised pix: The almost invisible bridge controls. Final cleanup on the island isn't yet complete. The forward elevator/"hangar deck. This is just taped in place at this time. The 4 shafts are in place on the hull bottom. The port boat pockets. The PE parts are not yet installed. I still haven't started the PE parts on the armament but I have started on the stack structure. My first attempt at scratch building the uptakes and intakes with styrene sheet failed so I'm thinking of doing them with folded cardstock. More to follow Ray

Holy moley, I just realized I'm in this GB; must be a carry over from a previous incarnation that....heh...I forgot about.  No problem, here are some IPR's:

I decided to do Revell's 1/72 S-100 Schnellboot.  Sadly, it turned out to be some kind of torpedo boat, not a "boot" as advertised.  Seriously, I'm suing. Anyway, as you can see, the cheap plastic stand rusted on me during construction, but I made do...

The upper and lower hulls.  At this point (pics to follow if you bug me sufficiently) The two have been mated, the lower hull fully painted and much of the upper's stuff emplaced, with a couple of extra do-dads (like scale rope) laid out here and there.  (Note to self: do unnecessarily fancy 'flemish flake' rope coil thing on the deck sometime soon).

Basically, I've been working on this project as the mood strikes me, very slowly, because its rather sizeable, but also because quality larger scale maritime projects are rare and worth savoring.

Oh, and does this GB have a badge? I didn't see one.

Airwing complete. 7x helldivers and 7x corsairs. Gold medal's PE is too hard,  kills knife blades fast.Tongue Tied

Found out Tisconderoga never carried corsairs only afterwards. Not going to go back to painting more now. I used aircraft from Tamiya's Bogue. Hasegawa's aircraft set is saved for future projects (I much prefer hasegawa's because despite raised lines, the wings are much thinner).

Nice work, Ray!  I had to go back to the initial listing to remind myself that you are working in 1:700-scale - a tribute to your neat work, detailing, and photography.

Group Build (Shiver Me Timbers):

1:200 Trumpeter Arizona, 0% complete

1:700 3 Flight Deck Akagi, 10% complete

Sadly, I'm working in 1/350th on the Lex.  Still, those "nearly invisible" bridge controls are less than

1/8th" tall.  That fine detail is thanks to the macro setting on my 12.1 mega-pixel camera and a good tripod.

My preferred scale is 1/48th which is about as small as these old eyeballs will handle.

All the best,

Ray

Not what I thought I'd be working on over the holiday weekend, but all my schedule allowed for (and prompted by holiday deadlines for certain internet auction deadlines):

These are several different efforts to waterline some hard-to-find 1:700 scale submarine classes:

Front to back in the group shot:

Pit Road 1:700 SSN 571 Nautilus, the first-nuclear powered submarine.  At the time of this shot, unpainted.  Currently painted, Future-d and awaiting decals.

Pit Road 1:700 USN SSG Grayback with Regulus 2 missile.  Served 40 WESTPAC deterence patrols from late 1950s - 1964.  Later a special forces transport sub.  This kit came pre-painted, and was waterlined with a razor saw, then minor assembly..

Pit Road 1:700 USN SSG Grayback with Regulus 1 missile.  Same as above.

Takara 1:700 Soviet Whiskey Long Bin SSG Missile submarines.  Modified from Whiskey-class diesel-powered patrol submarines, to carry 4 nuclear missiles.  According to reports, rather unstable  vessels, and quickly retired from service, replaced by the Juliet class in the Soviet fleet.

Takara 1:700 XXI U-boat.

Here are two closer shots of the SSG submarines:

Plus I got my workbench cleaned up, the airbrush cleaned up, and dropped $50 at the local hobby shop getting read for the ships I committed to in this build.  Hope all had a great Thanksgiving!

Potchip - I should paint my airwings first, like you.  None of my 1:700 carriers have any aircraft on them - at the end-stage of a project, I have no patience for painting/assembling aircraft.

I am late in getting back to posting after being out of the hobby for a couple of years.  I have the 1/350 USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and a Mk III PBR (1/35) both available.  As the month of November hasn't finished out, is there time to get in on this still?

A little update on the Big-E. The floor of the hanger bay is complete.  Need to get the walls up and get the some planes in there so just a little bit more work to do before I can continue.

Well little update from me (to say I havnt fallen off the planet again, just a crappy head cold), just stripped all the red and black paint off the hull and the white I had done on some parts of the deck after doing some more sanding on the hull. After 11pm here so I'll try to get some pics of tomorrow, not really any furthur on construction.

Tell us about the cardstock that you are using for the hanger deck - not from the kit, correct?

the hanger deck is 1mm thick plastic sheet.  The kit dosen't have a hanger deck, in fact I had to cut open the doors, so all of is being done from scratch (my first major scratch build).

I put the metal bracing for the flight deck in, so I can build the walls around them.

Hello everyone

I have cut out the windows and glazed them on one of my Sovremenny's.  I have also completed most of the major superstucture on the ships.  I have even added a "tiny" portion of WEM's photo etch.  The guns, helo deck and brackets on the smoke stack.  You have to look very carefully just to see them.

Nothing is glued down yet.  In looking at pictures of the Sovremenny's I have noted their is a wide difference in paint schemes.  I have taken liberties.

In the backgroud is a completed Sovremenny that was partially built by the previous owner.

Don't know what to do next ???

Have you experimented with any washe's or anything like that?  I am by no means an expert with them as i have never done one but i am planning on doing one with my build for this group but i would try one on the brown areas you go their.

Is it possible for me to join in on this GB? I’ve got a Mogami Hybrid Crusier (1/700 waterline Tamiya kit) in my stash.

Hello

Congrats to Goodness189.

I have never done any washes before.  I was thinking about trying.

I added WEM photo etch to two guns and built a tower this weekend.

Got the scratch built hanger bay all done.  Didn't add too much detail, has most of it will be hidden in a dark place, so I mainly kept the details to the elevator openings.  Working on the airwing at the moment to determine which planes will go on the flight deck and which will go into the hanger bay.  Will probably add some other minor items in the hanger, i.e. crates, tractors, etc

Hello everyone!

Here's my first progress report. I got the hull of the 1/700 Mogami aircraft carrying cruiser--plus the rear flight deck assembled, two gun turrets nearly completed and most of the forward structure finished.

There's 21 pieces all together that went into the forward structure and I still need to add four more pieces to complete it.

This is my first plastic ship model I have ever started building and so far am really enjoying it.

Goodnes,  I am going to have to pull the USS North Carolina from this GB.  I do not have the time to complete her with all that I have going on.  I have a USCG boat that is 50% done... if you don't mind a cross-over this late in the game then I we can add her instead.  Otherwise I would have to bow out of the GB.  What say you.
