Doogs: Sorry, didn't mean to come off as too critical there. She looks great with the gloss on her. I'm going to have to try airbrushing on the insignia some day soon.

As I understand the greenish black rings around the hinomaru were where the former white rings were seen as too visible so the ground crews were ordered to paint over the white. Sometimes they weren't very regular and paint did seem to vary somewhat in shade.

Bsyamato: Ah, ok I know what you mean there about the tires. I have an Italeri German halftrack I did years ago with rubber front tires. About a year or two after I built it the left front tire split in half! Super Angry Looking forward to seeing how all the work on the Mary comes out.

David: Wow! That looks fantastic!!! Who said Japanese planes were always dull green over grey? Toast

David - agreed on those decals! I wouldn't worry about where they cracked along the elevator line - a panel wash will darken that area up anyway.

Gamera - please be critical! You actually echoed something I was thinking...

Okay...first attempt salt weathering last night. A bit too heavy handed IMO, but I think a blending wash should bring everything back together a bit, followed by one more coat of Future before the final clear (Alclad Light Sheen) goes down.

David: Nice build! Love the colors you got on that one.

Doggs: Coming out great...as far as the Hinomarus and the dark color, from what I remember they were painted that way to cover the white borders that were orginally on them. May be wrong, just shooting from the hip.

Man, if wasn't in so many GB's (and this Peacemaker wasn't such a bear) I'd do a dual Kate build (the Hase and Nichimo with torp) to finish my Jap PH plane.

BTW, great looking builds guys, there is some fantastic work in this thread! Yes

I am going out on a limb here  by making a very controversial statement but I believe that although the best/most unique looking planes belonged to the Luftwaffe, in terms of subjects being represented by the modeling companies, I think the Japanese are the most complete (perhaps due to Tamiya/Hasegawa/Otaki/Nichimo).

I'd agree that the Japanese aircraft are very well represented - at least in terms of kits. Depending on the subject, aftermarket markings are either glorious or a world of hurt.

The thing I don't know, just because I don't know Japanese aircraft as well, is if there are "variant holes" floating around. For example - Hasegawa makes a mean P-40E, K, M and N. In 1/48 and 1/32. But if you want to do a Merlin-engined P-40F or P-40L (which were rather common in Africa and Italy), you're stuck with an old, troublesome kit that doesn't hold a candle. And if you want to do a B/C, you kind of face the same (albeit with a few options).

Is there something like that with the Japanese aircraft? A fairly major variant of, say, the Ki-44 that's just not offered really? I don't know...

Nothing comes to mind off the top of my head fighter-wise, though I may think of something over time. There aren't many Japanese bombers in 1/48th outside Tamiya's Betty though. I think almost all are represented in 1/72nd though. And there are some trainers, ground-attack, recon, and transports that aren't done.

Doogs: Very nice work, the washes really dull down and weather the green.

Bsyamato: Nice work there too, I'll say again I love how you pre-shade using brush painting. And the hinomaru look good, well except for the close-up. Shouldn't be too hard to fix though.

I do have a Kate, was thinking about doing a Grace or a IJA tank before we're done here. Really need to clean the bench before I look at anything though.

Yeah that seems to be the consensus...kinda wish now I'd made my black-green a bit more green. Oh well...

I keep thinking about the salt weathering I did last night.

First thought - I REALLY need to install the garage sink.

Second...the tutorial I came across recommended using a Future base to protect the underlying paint, and enamels over the salt. I tried this (first coat was highly thinned MM camoflage gray, second was highly thinned Burnt Umber/Flat Black) and it worked great.

Third...rinsing the kit under the faucet is heart-stopping!

Fourth...a salt grinder and warm water out of a spray bottle is WAY better than using table salt and a wet brush...

bsyamato,

I'm working on the 1/48 Nichimo B5N2 Kate, but I got to spend the month of March moving.  I was in the house for 9 years and my parents 17 years before me so lets just say there was a lot of 'stuff' to move.  I'm just about finished with that, need to finish decaling my AZ Model Ki-78 'Ken', then it's back to full time on the Kate.

Bit more progress. Another coat of the umber/black really calmed things down. Looking forward to how it'll look when Future brings the sheen together. Also got her on her feet last night. Front struts are only dry-fits.

That's how I've always envisioned it, too, but see the above conversation w/ Eric.

Here's an excellent tutorial on salt weathering, was kind of my inspiration. All I know is...I can't WAIT to try this on the PV-1.

I look forward to seeing where this method goes.

Doogs: Thanks for the link, interesting. The washes are really bringing things together.

Bsyamato: Yes, I would like to sprinkle that Kate with salt and carefully scrub and wash it off. But she is a married woman so I will not have such thoughts Angel

Sooo close to being done. Still have to do the landing gear supports, inner bay doors, glue the canopy, and paint the wing lights and aerial wire. And mount the drop tank.

The George will be finished tonight.

Also...think I overdid the salt weathering. Next time I'll have a go at it a few times, with basically thinner + a drop or two of paint. Especially on a dark color, it doesn't need much more than that. I'll also do all the panel washes, etc, beforehand.

One weird side effect was, when I put the sealing coat of Future down, some spots turned milky white. Thank god they went away under Alclad Light Sheen...I think they were some left over salt crystals that reacted poorly with the Future. Definitely a technique that needs some refining.

Thanks guys - the George has been a fun kit! Lots of new techniques to refine coming out of it, too. Hard to believe I'm brining it in in right around one month! Definitely whet my appetite for more Japanese aircraft in the future!

Finals to come later tonight once the last bits are done...

Been wondering about that, actually. Never seen much weathering on Japanese props...what gives with that? Would they have the metal chipping reminiscent of US props?

I'm certain you've researched this a lot more than me and it would appear in all the "restored" a/c photos there's not much weathering to be seen anywhere (which makes sense for restored a/c).  Only photo i came across (sure you have it too) is this:
