Thanks guys. In the grand scheme of this build, those decal tears are pretty small things to have to correct. It is really coming together and quite eye catching now with the Hinomarus and the leading edge Yellow ID marks. A very good looking aircraft.

Hey Guys and Gals

I finished my Finemolds kit of a Ki-43-III "Hayabusa".  I found the to be an OK build, not great but not bad either; and it IS the only game in town for the Ki-43 III.

I'm sorry I didn't post more pics of the construction but as I got moving more and more, I didn't want to stop to take pictures!  still in all I did manage a few so here they are, and now was wondering if I can sneak in another Japanese aircraft, this time a twin engine Mitsubishi Hyakushiki Shitei.   I just think looks bad ass with all those guns poking out all over the place....

Some of the parts that make up the cockpit.  I was not happy with the overall fit of the model.  Definatelt NOT worth the price you see these kits going for in the store or at shows.

Like I said, once she started rolling.....Here is the painted model showing the NMF on the under surfaces.  I used Tamiya rattle can for the base, and the different panels were high lighted by masking off, and using different shades of Alclad II.  It looks much better in person because you can really see the different shades. 

Painted but not weathered.........yet.....

All painted and finished!!  I used Floquil Military Enamels on the upper surfaces.  Yes I had some of that stuff and it still good even after all these years.  The model is weathered with thinned oils and pastels and I also faded the paint on all the upward facing surfaces, by adding a little light gray.  Streaks were made by further lightening the base coat and painting in a streaky motion.

I say just extend this one. But if you do a Part II, make it at least a year long ;-)

On a related side note, whichever way this goes, put me down tentatively for a Nichimo 1/48 B5N2 Kate. Yesterday I was able to watch an original Japanese DVD (with no subtitle in English) of the 1960 Toho Studios movie "I Bombed Pearl Harbor" .  Talk about a movie models miniature extravaganza. The model miniature effects are of the type seen in "The Bridges at Toko Ri" but not quite so well done. Definitely more on par with Toho's Godzilla movies of that time. I will say this, they got the Japanese aircraft types right- lots of scale Vals, Kates, and Zeroes. As those models would appear, I would think to myself  are those Tamiya or Nichimo? The main aviator character in the movie seems to be based on Lt Hashimoto who like the movie character flew Kates off of the Hiryu at Pearl Harbor and Midway, and would survive both missions. So an old school Kate it will be for me.

I've got enough Jap planes to fill a carrier!  I just wished I got the motivation/time to get back to the bench.

I say start fresh with a second GB. I might get in with something.

Wow, didn't know there was this much interest! Ok, since the majority seem to be for a part 2 I'll just run this way to the end of year as planned and then kick off part 2 on new years day to run for the whole year. Anyone who has an overrun on part 1 is welcome to carry over into the second gb. Any issues?

SP: I'd heard references to these films. The same guy that did the special effects for the Godzilla films did these too. Heard the US Navy on finding some of the footage thought it was gun camera footage from the Japanese attack!

I don't know about that being able to be mistaken for real combat footage in most parts. But about 80%of the IJN carrier scenes in Midway came from this movie. Anything that showed the IJN carrier operations (besides the take offs and fly by's lifted from Tora! Tora!Tora! ) with none of the Japanese American actors such as Robert Ito (Genda), James Shigeta (Nagumo), or Robert Fujioka (Yamaguchi). I would love to find an English subtitled version for my DVD library. The Hiryu scuttling sequence is quite poignant even if not quite historically correct.

SP: about the FX shots being taken as combat footage - that's what the guy on the DVD said it may likely be sheer bauderdash. Or now I'm thinking he said that was the first evaluation which was later discarded. Anyway it's been years since I've seen Tora! 3x. Seems the cable stations used to show it all the time but it seems to have been largely replaced by Midway.

Hey, great idea Stik.  I'll tell you what, I've got both the 1/48 Hase & Nichimo B5N2.  My plan is to build a PH version bird with the Hase and use the torp from the Nichimo.  Upon inspection, the Hase kit looks superior but does not come with a torp.  I'd love to do a side by side build in the Jap GB 2.

I have both as well. I was planning on doing the Hasegawa kit as Fuchida's  mount, or possibly the one from Soryu credited with dropping the bomb that sank Arizona. In either case as a Pearl Harbor level bomber. But my Nichimo Kate will use it's torpedo and be a Hiryu bird. On the Nichimo torpedo, you will need to add four more fins, as it had 8 tail fins and not just the four molded on in the kit

Not familiar with the 8 fins but have read that they were made of wood, due to the shallowness of PH.

That was an additional fitting. The photo that I posted above is of the unmodified torpedoes on board the carriers shortly before they sailed for Hawaii.

Here is the remnants of a Japanese torpedo recovered from Pearl Harbor now on display at the Arizona Memorial center

and a poor quality view of one type of wooden fins that were fitted over the existing metal fins.

Well I got the red on the control linkages on the upper wing Hinomarus touched up. Hopefully it will dry a good match.

Btw: someone did a model on this site with the modified wooden fins for shallow running about two or three years ago. It might be worth looking up.
