Hurricane Sandy
Posted by troublemaker66 on Sunday, October 28, 2012 2:46 PM

Hey All,

I`ll be out of the loop for a while...getting evacuated inland....all models point to her landing in my back yard. Firetrucks are riding up and down the roads announcing a mandatory evac by 6pm tonight. My kids are freaking out and I am a bit too...worried about the record flooding they`re talking about.

See ya in a few days.

Good luck, Len, and God bless.  My son lives in central PA and it looks like the track is going right over his location, so we're worried about him, too.  No evacuations there, however.

Thanks Chuck! We`re right on the lagoon`s in Mystic Islands and low tide looked like high tide so I know we`re getting water damage when this hits tomorrow. We have family and friends in Philly and the burbs northeast of the city and some in Conshohoken (spelling) and Roxborough. They got it worse during Irene last year but I think we`re gonna really get it this time. Last time it flooded during a storm in my town, that affected my area was "Andrew" in `92. I`m ever hopefull but have taken all valuables to the 2nd floor. We`re staying with our friend and it`s not far from home but far enough.

Hope your Son is safe and sound!

C'mon out here and join us in Colorado!  No hurricane worries, but we do have wildfires, avalanches, etc!

Thanks guys, we are safe at a friends house on high ground. Unfortunately, my house has to be flooded but can`t confirm with my own eyes. Some lagoons sit higher than others, ours is the latter. I sneaked a peek early this morning, around 10am and the section I live in had water over the road...not sure how deep though, I still have a little hope that just my Florida room will flood.

Only thing I have to worry about now, at my friends place, is the power going out...which has happened twice but came back on both times. Thanks for all your concern, we appreciate it.

Stay safe all.  The storm is entering my backyard as well.  While I now have some free time, I can't imagine I'll get to see what I'm doing for much longer.

Funny thing, I saw this thread in the GB section, and I thought that there was going to be a hurricane GB.

Stay safe gentlemen!  I've got a cousin in Baltimore, sent me a picture of her local grocery store... picked clean, except for the toys that hang in the kids' cereal aisle! Don't think she's had to evac, but the mass transit is shut down from what I've been told

Sounds like I'll get some light storm mayhem on Wednesday where I am (winds, 50mm of rain). The wind has already picked up noticeably, and we've been seeing some precipitation most of the day. Still a lot of leaves on the trees up here right now, so there could be some downed power lines.

Be safe Len.  You too Anthony and anyone else in the path.  I'm in Piscataway and my front porch is on the leeward side of the house so I Just made a very large gin & tonic and had a cigar watching, and listening to, the wind.  WOW.  I am amazed that any tree is still standing after just 50 mph gust much less sustained hurricane force winds.

We complain about our weather in Blighty, but at least we don't have this sort of thing to worry about.

Glad your safe Len, figures crossed for the house.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Thanks for all the words of encouragement guys, but alas, we got 4 1/2' through my 1st floor. It flipped my fridge upside down and threw furniture all around. My bench and many completed builds were destroyed...salvage ops begin tomorrow. From what i was told, the water surged, then receded very quickly...hardly any mud or debris. Kinda looked like someone tossed a grenade in there...looks like my paints and some supplies may have survived. Took my stash upstairs so that`s safe at least. Lots of clean up ahead of me.

There were 1:1 scale boats all over the place...boats inside other boats, on lawns, in back yards, on shed roof`s...you name it. Only 1 fatality that I heard of...found face down in his living room...stupid for not getting out! Power just came on from yesterday around 4pm...brutal when you have a house full of nervous teens.

Hope everyone else in Sandy`s path on these forums are safe and sound, after all, that`s the most important thing....Wink

OK...finally got inti the Florida Room...a.k.a. my model shop. I lost a great deal of supplies but also salvaged a ton of stuff. Lost decals and instructions and the kit boxes on a dozen kits that were stashed around in closets on the 1st floor, that I had forgotten about. I took about 90% of my stash to the 2nd fl and the rest of the undamaged kits were on "high ground" on 1st fl. Salvaged all of my Tamiya and MM paints, as far as I can tell, and my airbrushes and Dremel made it too. Still sifting through the rubble in there. Oh, 3 more finished builds survived almost intact, some fiddlies were missing but easily fixed.

Anyone else want to chime in on their Hurricane Sandy stories, be my guest!  Big Smile I can`t be the only one that went through this on the Forums...or can I..? HmmHmmHmm

Len, I went through it, but I'm not coastal, and I live well above sea level..  The only thing I was really worried about was an oak tree falling onto my room which didn't happen.  How did the OV-1 make out?

From what I could see, yes. Are all the parts there..?..that`s another story. The stuff I had already put together for that one was still on the bench, so were some sprues  but not sure if I got everything. I sifted through alot of stuff around my bench and tried saving as much as possible. I can`t spend anymore time doing that because I have to start gutting the room...walls and ceiling were damaged , have to get the soggy sheet rock and insulation out ..starting to stink somethin` awful.

I saved the plastic parts of several kits that were in a closet under the stairs, box, decals and instructions were toast...but I`m drying out the inst`s on my railing to the 2nd floor..lol.

We got the word that we had to get out of where we were staying by Tuesday but skedaddled tonight to another friends place in Manahawkin...they are on a cruise for a week....sucks being homeless.

Len hope you are able to get your home back soon,we had a tree through the roof during Charlie so I know how tough it gets.My wife ,Mom and 2 kids Lived in 1 room with a window rattler on a generator for 3 weeks. The good thing is 'things' can be fixed and although it took until last year to get all of our damage taken care of it does happen eventually. Keep your spirits up and do'nt watch the news it really burned us out hearing about damage constantly.

Yeah, 3 weeks sucks man. I`m looking at months prolly, FEMA inspector already processed some stuff...just got a message that we are covered for housing. He showed up at 11 am and was there a bit over an hour. Had alot of tips and good advice for fighting mold, etc. He was in LA for Katrina, he said other than the death toll, Sandy was much worse than Katrina, damage estimates are gonna blow right past he said...amazing.

If I get enough money to do it, we`re going up on pilings...my neighbor across from me is up 16' and all he got was a messy yard...Wink

...and, haven`t watched any TV since Monday....Crying

Yea the mold would be a problem ,we had water pooring through the electric outlets when the roof decided to let the tree through. I hope they get you squared away before it becomes months! Pilings sound expensive but probably would be worth it. Keep the spirits up Len,you're in our thoughts!

Funny thing happened today...we`re at a store and they were asking for donations for the  Red Cross. We know the people that own/work at the store and dropped a few bucks into the till. The guy at the counter said, "you know we`re collecting for you right?" That`s when it really sunk in what happened to us...never in a million years would I believe I`d need help from the Red Cross or any agency for that matter...a strange feeling...

Hope you are safe and well, and on your way to recovery. We did OK in my neck of the woods in southern CT. Ironically, I used the "free time" to continue fixing my basement/mancave that had been flooded during Irene. New sump pump setups, sealants, gutter placements etc  = all worthwhile, did not get any water in during Sandy.

I also moved all my modelling supplies to large tupperware bins; no more cardboard for me! Paints I put in a large heavy duty (plastic, not metal) tool box. Many of my stash kits are out of the cardboard boxes and into plastic bins; decals and instructions separate, in a binder and out of harm. I purchased some heavy duty garage shelving units in Home Depot (plastic) and use the "shelves" as "pallates"; now everything in the basement is at least 2 inches off the floor. I figure I can get 2-3 inches of water into the basement no damage, 4-6 with just clean up needed. Electrical is a problem... need to pay an electrician to rewire some outlets and have them HIGH instead of LOW. Mold has been a problem; I keep having to treat the baseboards with anti-mold agents (mostly bleach). My spray booth is in an attached garage next to the basement, and got almost a foot of water during Irene. The booth was "up" but I lost the compressor; just full of water and mud, not worth fixing/cleaning up. One last suggestion: if you have some serious investment of $$ in your hobby, keep an excel inventory and digital pictures of your stuff for insurance purposes.

Anyways, hope you are on your way to recovery and that the above hints can be useful to people with water/flooding issues on their workshops.

Cheers

Thanks Jmart, we are on the road to recovery. Luckily, I have a nephew who is a builder, another is a roofer and my brother is a very talented sheetrock finisher...never leaves a visible seam..lol. I`m an electrician/ telecom splicer so we have it all covered...except for HVAC.

I had most of my supplies in plastic containers but, they  filled with water. Like I said earlier, I saved most of my stash except some that I forgot were in a closet under the stairs. I had seperated many decals and instructions in seperate binders but kept them on my bench..bad move. Many of the decals survived because they were in zip-lock freezer bags. The ones I didn`t bag up didn`t make it. I had every instruction book from every kit I ever built..and that`s alot, in a plastic tote that obviously had a bad seal `cause it was filled with bay water. In a way it`s a good thing...getting rid of many things that were not being used, just taking up space, and getting a fresh start. The paints and kits, airbrushes and other pricey things survived so that`s good. I use compressed air to power my A/B so no compressor to worry about. My daughter photographed everything in my shop, just have to write it all down now.

Thanks for the tips, already workin` on it!
