Cool! Nice work with the crazy complex camouflage!

I guess a few words on that are in order. I put down the yellow first. Then applied Liquid Mask to it. Put down the brown next and used blue tack to do the green and dark brown. Then, peeled off the Liquid Mask. Had to touch it up in a few places as I scratched it removing the mask, but all in all it came out pretty good.

Hey Folks

I've made some progress on the N1K1, "Shinden".  Got her painted, decaled and sealed.  After she gets a soapy bath to remove any leftover setting solution residue, it's on to another light coat of clear gloss to even things, and then the clear flat coat.  All in all a good little model which I am very much having a blast putting together.  Here's the progress shots so far...

Thanks for looking guys.  More pictures real soon and then it's on to the Ki-51, "Sonja"...

"I'm gonna build all these models one kit at a time!

To all on the GB...great looking work! Yes

Gamera- As I near the completion of the 1/48th B-29, I've been snooping around for a "Tony" fighter locally.

I finally found one and may be interested in joining the GB. I still have a bit to go yet on the 29, but the Tony is the aircraft that Capt. Ogata was flying when he and Z Square 8 collided over Kobe, (that is my reasoning).

I'll have to evaluate time after I get done with the 29 in the Gift GB and NMF GB.

Would be interested in joining late if that is ok...let me know as time permits.

Paul: Thanks! Will give it a look, heck of a battleship and one heck of a story there too.

WT: Thanks for the how-to. I built one Japanese tank some years back and used Silly Putty for all the masking, it think she looks ok.

Fjs3: Wow! Wish my fighters looked that good! Love the streaking on the wings and the NM underside looks great!

Rich: Sure! I'll put you down whenever you're ready. The build goes to the end of the year so you've got about eight months to go, so no rush at all! You can sign up any time.

@surfsub, the Lion Roar PE set looks very good! I have the Eduard set, and that does not look as well as Lion Roar..

@Gamera, I'll post an I-400 dio that I made a while ago. 1:700. That's small!

I am happy with the salt chipping tecnique for Japanes aircraft, however only in a single grey sceme.

How do you guys mask over the salt for the demarcation lines when doing a two tone green/grey sceeme???

Not sure how well the tape will stick to the rough salt. I need to start painting the 1/48 Otaki George.

Was the line between green and grey a hard masked or soft line?

Thanx

Another question, what green and grey to use on the IJA George? In either Tamiya or even Humbrol maybe?

I see some Shindens were silver on the bottom, not grey. Was this a common thing?

Paul: Looking forward to it, the I-400 dio sounds cool!

Theuns: I've seen Shidens both bare aluminum on their undersides and painted grey. I'm not sure if it's different interpretations of the black and white photos or there were some painted and some not. I'd say the NM is probably more correct but I don't think anyone can call you wrong either way you do it.

The demarcation should be soft on the real thing I believe but scaled down to 1/48th or smaller it's going to look hard edge. I may have some notes on colour, I'll look around and see what I can find. I know the top is more of a blueish green - I think the Tamiya colour should be decently close. I'll try to get you more information on Monday. Meanwhile J-Aircraft has some information at the bottom of this page that might help.

As to the chipping I've seen very little of the grey paint chipping, it seems most of the chipping was on the upper coats that received poor or no primer underneath them. Check here on J-Aircraft for a very in depth article on the subject.

Well, I was hoping to get some more work done this weekend but it seems my nephews hid my egg planes somewhere, now I've got to find them!

Happy Easter guys!

That Shinden is looking fantastic, and I didn't realise that those Yamato turrets were so small, the detail is incredible!

Thanx, silver it is then! Means I do not have to go and buy the grey LOL!

Anyway this Otaki George leave a bit to "interpretation" anyway with the poor wheelwells :-(

I will also mix up a batch of "green" by eye and see how it goes on, if not right then I wouldn't care to much.

What about the underwing "addons" like the central fuel tank and the outer wing underslung gunpods, what color would there have been?

Thanx

I got the silver on the whole George now, I must say it is very tempting to leave it all silver!

Winetanker

I like those Yamato turrets too!

I'm calling my ChiHa done....

Pastels and filters seemed to lighten up the brown, especially in the front.

Nice tank !!!

Good updates guys Toast

time to move on me too!!

images shows updates, just painted the seats after the detail cure and glued pieces

At the next!

I "silvered" the George and then used salt for the chipping.

 photo models156_zps73c16da6.jpg

The closest I had to IJN green without having to go buy was humbrol dark green. I recon the green on the planes would fade from a blue/green to a more green/green LOL!

1/48 Otaki George photo models157_zpsb73a561a.jpg

After removing some of the salt I found that just as good chipping could be had by simply scraping some of the paint of with a toothpick! This needless to say led to me going overboard with the chipping.....ah well, to late now!

More pix top follow.

Just couldn't help myself, chipping off the green was like eating peanuts........once you start you just can't stop! This is way more than I wanted todo, but oh well.....I will just have to live with it :-(

The color is also not blue enough I see now after 3 coats of future.

Theuns: I wouldn't get too upset about it. I was looking over 'Genda's Blade' and some of their Shidens were beat all to hell and back with massive globs of paint missing. Tamiya XF-11 looks very close to Kawanishi green but I wouldn't lose sleep over what you used there. Considering sun fading it looks pretty good to me!

Bsyamato: Nice work too! The cockpit detailing is great, the plane must be tiny. I love the brown, I'm assuming leather, seats!

Son of Medicine Man brought this up with me, I didn't realize this was this week in history. The casualty counts are pretty depressing:

On another note, 68 years ago today, operation Iceberg began on Love Day, April 1st, 1945.  It was the beginning of what is more commonly known as the Battle of Okinawa.  It was the United States most costly battle in World War II.  U.S. losses were over 62,000 casualties of whom over 12,500 were killed or missing.

"Although Allied land forces were entirely composed of U.S. units, the British Pacific Fleet provided about 1/4 of Allied naval air power (450 planes).  It comprised a force which included 50 warships of which 17 were aircraft carriers, but while the British armored flight decks meant that fewer planes could be carried in a single aircraft carrier, they were more resistant to kamikaze strikes.  Although all the aircraft carriers were provided by Britain, the carrier group was a combined British Commonwealth fleet with British, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian ships and personnel.  Their mission was to neutralize Japanese airfields in the Sakishima Islands and provide air cover against Japanese kamikaze attacks."

Allied Casualties and losses

12,513 killed

38,916 wounded

33,096 non-combat losses

Total: 84,570

Japanese Casualties and losses

About 95,000+ killed

7,500-10,755 captured

Total:  105,755+

Estimated 42,000-150,000 civilians killed

The paint chipping on that Shiden has come out real nice, I'll have to try that technique some time.

I like it Theuns, keeping most of the chipping around where the ground crew would walk or handle is one big thing you've got there that some people miss - kudos!

Thanx mate. I am lucky to work on full size planes for a living so I have a fair idea where the most likely plases would be for the crew to be working.(and wrecking the piantwork LOL)

I have the decals on the George and for such an old kit I am really amazed at how well they went on! They are extremely thin and laid down very well with just the slightest help of some microsol.

The only hassle is that the green/silver demarcation line on the port side fuse "sun" shows through the decal, but now I know for next time.

I might just have to get more of thses Otaki kits.

I am in the final stages of the build and will, post pix soon.

Yes Cliff, i supposed seats was in leather from some picture :)

Nice salt'n'chippin Theuns Yes

Here primed the little 108 (horizontal udders are the same of the bf-109 )  and added cowling and drilled holes for  engine pipes

Seems that need some more sanding before to procede Embarrassed at the next!

Just realised I haven't posted any picture of my progress yet, so I'll put the couple I have up. At the moment I'm in the progress of applying the splinter camouflage, done on the wings so far, still have the upper fuselage to do though. Sorry for the poor quality and lighting, the picture were taken on my phone (will use a proper camera when I'm nearing completion)

Alex: Good looking cockpit! Gee that canopy looks like it was a pain to mask.

Alex: Good looking cockpit! Gee that canopy looks like it was a pain to mask.

It wasn't that bad. The canopy is actually only held in place by the tape instead of being glued at the moment, so that I can leave the canopy open when I'm done painting. On a different note, the needle chucking nut of my airbrush decided it wanted to roll down my sink today, so that'll put a halt to progress until my replacement arrives.

Ouch, good luck Alex, I know what you mean- replacing airbrush parts is frustrating and expensive. When I dropped mine on a concrete floor replacing the dented head was crazy, all that money for a tiny little metal part- ok it was precision machined but still...

Guys I am calling this George completed. Not a bad kit, just a pitty about the shallow wheelwells.
