I did some research for Doog's Jug GB and don't have much to add here. Everything sounds right to me. Only exception is I did find that on some P-47s the cowling interior could be natural metal or it could be painted yellow zinc chromate- either way is right.

Clemons and Shiv: Those cockpits look just about perfect, they could be used as an example on how to paint the cockpit of a P-47!

Thanks, Cliff!

Do you really think? This means a lot coming from someone who makes such awesome models!

I hope the NMF on my jug turn out half as good as the one on your 2 beauties...

Thanks Clemons!

And you really don't want to know how many models I ended up ruining and either stripping or tossing in the spare parts box before these two! I clearly remember ruining a Hasegawa 1/48th Ki-61 Hien and a Hasegawa 1/72nd B-17. I've got an Academy 1/72nd B-17 that I'm thinking about stripping and repainting. And there were a few more in there too!

That is a nice looking cockpit, shiv.  I always have trouble with the highlighting around the dials.  You've achieved it very well.

I painted the cockpit and dials than gave it a coat of pledge. After I used raw umber for a wash and dry brushed first with Alclad white aluminum than dry brushed lightly with flat whit

You use Alclad paints for drybrushing? I thought they are way too thin to do anything but spraying models with them... I have to try that out myself. Thanks for the tip!

I've used Alclad to drybush a few times. Just have takes a bit more to build it to where you are satisfied. I had to go over it 3-4 times.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try that next time I have to do some silver drybrushing.

Bish, I'm new to group builds and not real sure I have a good handle on it, but I love the theme and I don't need much of a reason to build another Tiger.

Can you give me the basics and what I need to know to get started.

Thanks

Sorry for my absence of late but sadly my mum passed away this week and only 8 months after dad had died . I should be able to re-start work on the Landing Craft boat in a few weeks time .

Jibber, welcome to the world of GB's. The rules are pretty simple for this GB. Your build must have taken part in the Normandy campaign during June of 1944. For a Tiger, it would have to be a vehicle of either the 101st SS S Pz Abt or the Tiger attached to the Pz Lehr Div, as these were the only Tigers at the front during June.

All you have to do is let me know which kit your building, make and scale, and then post progress pics as you go along.

I did a rough guide to GB's a couple of months back as we have had a lot of new members. So if you want more of an insight into GB's in general, check it our. Ignore the first two paragraphs and the last bit. The big bit in the middle should help you out.

Well look what's being loaded up on the Landing Craft ...... a Water Tank Truck. Can't have an invasion without fresh water ( Unless you're in the Pacific Operation).

Put most of the main components together and shot with black primer.

This old kit has fit issues and it will be hard to glue up the cab after color modulation.

Bish, I'm not sure what builds are spoken for, but my latest passion is german armor. There are so many to choose from, could you think of a couple in 1/35 such as a Tiger, Sturm, etc that are unassigned and

bring something very cool to the group?

Also, do the guys have a couple builds, I would like to add a piece of armor from both sides, such as a Tiger and a Sherman?

Thanks

Well, it doesn't matter if someone else is building one. Occasionally a GB will work like that, but not often. And you can enter as many builds as you like. There were no Strum tiger's in Normandy. One Tiger kit I know will defiantly work in the Tamiya Mid production Tiger I. Vehicle number 131 of the 101st SS s Pz Abt would fit the bill, I built that kit a few years ago myself.

As for Sherman's, I have no idea about a good kit for that.

Nice work, Bruce.  Don't think I've seen a  kit of a water truck before.  Interesting subject.

Normandy saw most Sherman variants used- M4, M4A1, M4A1 76mm, M4A2, M4A4, and M4A4 Firefly. At least within the time constraints of this GB. In 1/35 Dragon, Italeri, Tamiya, and Tasca have all of those variants covered. You could also getfancy and do a conversion such as the Sherman dozer tank, DD tank, Crab flail tank, etc. And the Sherman derivatives- M10/Achilles GMC, M7 Priest HMC, M32 ARVs, M12 GMC.

Bruce: Nice to see a real 'tank' here!

SP pretty much covered this but if I may add a little:There were five major versions of the Sherman:
M4: older model but some were used in the invasion
M4A1: Second most common US model
M4A2: Mostly sent to the Pacific with the US Marine Corps, I've seen photos of many used by the Free French though during D-Day.
M4A3: Started service post-invasion (edited on Stikpusher's correction)
M4A4: Mostly used by Britain, Canada, and the rest of the Commonwealth troops, none used as far as I know by the US though except for training stateside.
There were three major gun types, the 75mm with the earlier turret being most common, the 105mm and 76mm with the newer turret entering service post-invasion. (again edited to correct)
As SP said there were a bunch of different conversions too. One thing you see on a lot of immediate post invasion Shermans were the Cullon Hedgerow Device- a sorta plow/dozer blade for cutting though the hedgerow thickets.
As for kits the Tasca ones are the best but quite pricey. Dragon is almost as good and cheaper. Academy, Tamiya, and Italeri/Testor's makes good kits though not as nice as the others.
This guy has a really useful site, good reviews of the different kits too!

The M4 varaints that I listed were the ones used in the invasion and immediate aftermath. M4A3s did not start appearing in combat until around the end of the Normandy campaign. Until Operation Cobra, us forces were equipped pretty much exclusively with M4s and M4A1s. For Cobra the M4 105mm and M4A1 76mm started their combat debut.

Really, ouch I stand corrected then!

The books I was looking though didn't specify between invasion, post-invasion, and liberation of France.

jibber, welcome aboard. Looking forward to seeing your build. Are going to do Tiger 131.

And I thought figuring out German armour was a headache. Some great info on the Allied armour there guys, keep it coming.

As a slight side note, the other half got a holiday brochure in yesterday for campsites in Europe for next year. And the one that took her fancy, with only a few hints from myself, is in Normandy, about 11 miles from Caen. We won't be going until late August, so will miss the 70th anniversary, but finally I will get see visit the sites over there. And I have been promised I can have at least two days to myself so wonder the museums and battlefields. Can't wait now.

I don't know how accurate you want to be, but if you do want to be as accurate as possible, the turret numbers might need altering. The kits decals have red numbers and they should be green,. When I did mine I added Zimmerite so I painted the side numbers on, white outlines and then filled in with green. And for the rear bin I added a kit decals and then just painted over the red.

I found this photo really useful. Its a colourized photo of a B&W image of 131 moving to the front.

Or you could just stick with the red numbers.

I don't know if part of the code is missing from that link, as its not working. To post pics, you need a hosting site, such as photobucket.
