Yes, the pencil sketch was coloured on the computer.  I created a mask from the pencil lines, and then flood filled the basic colours.  Followed up with hightlights and darker tones via the paintbrush tool.

i have taken B/W photos and layered transparent colors over it. the transparency allows for the shadows to come through. haven't done a lot of real artsy stuff since i am a technical illustrator.

I've also made a start. Well, actually these were done about 2 weeks ago. I've held off any further building until the New Year.

Platz' ASM-1 missiles included in their F-1 kit. I'll only be using the red/yellow one. Nice stores in this kit.

Yes, it's 72nd. Tamiya recently released one in 35th. Fujimi's initial release was in 2011, but has released several more last year.

Fujimi's kit is very well thought out and builds easily. The parts fit well, but need careful cleanup due to the very fine mold seams present. They used a lot of slide mold tech on this one. Tracks are length and sort of link. Tracks around the drive and return wheels are done with curved length pieces. In all the tracks have 4 pieces per side. Very nicely done and they fit, too!

This kit is really falling together. I expect to start painting soon.

I'll be returning to the F-1 soon. This is a pretty nice kit and is much better than Hasegawa's 72nd effort. Platz has an incredible decal sheet in the kit. Unfortunately, the only scheme provided for is for the JASDF version of SEA. I figured the test round ASM would provide some nice contrast to the greens and tans.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Years day. I started doing my George by adding some wire to dress up the engine. Didn't bother filling in the sink marks on the cylinder sides since the cowling will cover and enclose everything up.

Shot some Tamiya Acrylic Aluminum and gave it some burnt umber oil washes to pop some of the details

The cockpit is next.

will be starting this soon. other than indy tracks, which is why i do warwheels, looks like a straight forward build.

Yeah, Jieitai has some cool stuff. Your Type 87 AW looks interesting and pretty mean.

My last build for 2013 was Fujimi's JGSDF 3 1/2 ton truck. It was an interesting, but overly engineered kit. It fit well, but needed some planning for completion.

Haven't started my build yet, going to knock out the Tank Hunters and North Africa build first. But I have picked out how I'm going to paint my Zero. Its going to have the green spots over the grey fuselage.  

i've seen that kit. wish someone would do a 1/35. i have some of the older revell germany modern stuff 1/35 german UNIMOG, 8x8 and a couple of 1/24 fire trucks plus some german army trucks in 1/72.

FineMolds has been a bit of JGSDF stuff lately, but haven't done this truck. I wouldn't be surprised to see it at some point in their catalog. It is very well served in 72nd with Fujimi's 3 releases and Aoshima's 2. But if one doesn't build in that scale, one is SOL.

I have several Revell modern 72nd, but none of their 35th. The ones I have are nice kits. I'd like to get more, but they're too expensive around here.

that's good to know. i have the 1/72 6x6, 8x8, and tank transporter. except for the ELEPHANT tank transporter the 1/35 modern trucks are not found in my LHS. i have picked up the UNIMOG, which i am doing for the UN GB, the 10T 8x8, and the GAZ-66 at vendor sales. i am looking for the 7T 6x6 to complete the set. given how revell is reissuing stuff mught show up.  i know the 1/24 SIMBA 8x8 flughaven firetruck is coming out in jan.

Shot the pit with Tamiya Acrylics so as to act as a barrier to the artist oil washes to deepen the details. I added a couple of wires here and there, dry brushed to pop the instruments and used the instrument decals. trying to keep this simple as possible.

PJ... I love the George! In my opinion it was probably one of the best fighters the Japanese had at the time! I might try to do one after the Oscar I'm doing first. Great work so far!

Alright, I finally got to do some Bench work this weekend, This again is a Hasagawa 1/32nd scale Ki-43 Oscar.

Not sure yet what Chutai or Sentai to do yet but before paint starts, I will have decided, Likely it will be a aircraft stationed in the Philippines in Cebu or Luzon around 1943. Well, Heres what I was able to do so far...

The Kit and the parts... Not extreme detail, but a little left over PE and some Eagle Strike Decals aint gonna hurt a bit!

Made some masking tape belts and harnesses and added some rudder cables.

Like I said... a little left over PE...

Port and Starboard sides of the fuselage office area. You know, as fussy and detail oriented as the Japanese are, I couldnt believe some of the detail in the pictures I found, like the exposed rudder cables just laying on top of the flooring, and the wiring just run along the interior ribbing and exposed like it was. But reguardless, the Oscar was a heck of a plane!

Snake....Thanks bud. Nothing fancy in the pit just dry brushing and adding a couple of wires here and there. I don't like spraying acrylics but I must admit the Tamiya paints cover very well and evenly.

Doug...Good to see you here and thanks for your comments. These Hase kits are a pure joy to put together. If you take the parts for this George and toss them up in the air, they all fall together without any effort, just great fit all around. The Oscar is looking awesome and as I have seen your past work, this one should be equally impressive when finished. As you mentioned about wires being on top of the flooring, just look at my George floorboard. The reference pictures I have seen show loose wiring as such. Just glad our Nissan, Toyota and Honda cars have their wires neatly tucked away!

Thanks all! Its going to be interesting taking a break for just a bit from the Luftwaffe... I'm getting closer to deciding which pilot and Sentai to do, there are some intersting choices to pick from.

And PJ, thank you for the kind words... yeah the Hasagawa is a nice kit, very few negatives from me.

OK, Got a bit more done... Tomorrow I'll start the tail and wings. Like some one already said, (I believe it was PJ...) You can toss a Hasagawa kit in the air and it will fall assyembled! Not alot of fiddley parts like I like, but a super nice amount of detail on the Fuse and wings. Think it will look pretty nice dressed up and weathered.

Guys, indeed, great work on the pits.  Is there a standard interior colour based on aircraft type, or maybe by manufacturer, such as Mitsubishi or Nakajimi?

Well, From what I was able to gather, (Damn little info available) on the actual orders from the Imperial war ministery, The Army aviation units were either painted a Metalic Blue Green or a dark grey very similar to RLM 74, With the side walls of the cockpit Dk grey RLM74 or natural metal with Grey floor, or Metalic Blue Green with the Blue Green floor.

I have ordered 2 books on the Oscar through Amazon, (Oscars Aces and Japanese aircraft of WWII) in the hopes of gaining a better look and understanding of these birdies. There are several other books but most well outside of my budget and I know very little about Japanese WWII aircraft.

Got some more done this weekend, and starting to near my favorite part of the build, the paint work and detailing!

Wings and tail attached.... most was so basic I didnt take pictures of assy. No gaps at all. but I did have to insert a small riser under the starboard wing root to raise it enough to match the fuselage where it mounts.

Primered!

The first top coat of silver, Nothing fancy just some good old no smudge glossy aluminium. I believe it was Rustoleum brand.
