The 2014 Automotive Group Build

Thanks for letting me join up!  This one was started a long time ago and has been collecting dust.  I thought it would be a good idea to step out of my comfort zone of aircraft and armor.  This one will be OOB with nothing added to it.  I need to get some basics down before I delve into adding detail.

This is where I started last Thursday.  I ended up being pretty busy over the weekend and didn't get a chance to see about joining here.  Its been many years since my last attempt at autos, so we'll see how it goes.

Nice work Brian, we only got each photo once. That's a nice blue, and it's smoooooth.

Dale, i think  decals can really make a model and yours has more than most .. lovely!

I actually started the building process on Monday of last week.  Happened to come across this GB and it lit a fire to get going with it again.  A year ago, all I had managed to do was get the parts washed before life took over and I stopped building.

I used Model Master GTS Pearl Blue (1997) from a spray can.  I'll add the gloss coat later. 

Misty:  Wow!  I'll have to go back through the GB and take a look at your painting process.

Dale, another excellent build and I too think decals are nifty. You've talked me into throwing a few on the Gremlin hehehe.

Welcome aboard Brian. You've got a good start and I like that color.

Yea Me! I made some progress today hehehe.

First thing was to finish prepping the 69 440 and then getting it primered.

Got the decals on the Gremlin. Hopefully I can make some time to spray the 2nd clearcoat tomorrow. For some reason the picture makes the stripe look wavy?? Also did some work on the hood. I still need to do some sanding on the putty to cover the weld seams.

Now that I can work on the 440 again, Woohoo! I need to finish this Gremlin. :)

Great to see some progress on that funky little Gremlin Eric.  Is that an interference pattern on the wavy stripe, looks something like it. I guess it's just the software disagreeing with itself.

I'm also making progress on my Tyrrell 020. I've primed with Tamiya Fine White primer, then semi gloss black prior to using TS-42 Light Gunmetal. I hope to have all parts primed later today or tomorrow, and lots of the construction done too. I guess I'm on track to maintain my one per month record.....

chassis and body are together, they didnt fit and some gentle dremel work was needed.  

doesnt look very shiny now as its covered in fingerprints etc.  ill polish it up again later.

Still looks pretty good to me Misty. The stuff you can see in the wheel arches looks good, as does the window framing.

Tony, I'm trying to finish the Gremlin this weekend so I finish up the 440. I sprayed the clear on the Gremlin and layed down the first coat of paint on the 440. I need to find some better looking wheels for it though.

Some nice progress and finishes out there!

Me...? Very little. Still on leave and spending some great family time. Yellow is done on the Jordan... BUT! I have a way of doing rear wing assembly complete, do the prime colour and then handpaint the other. This is not a good idea on these complex rear wings! The less said about that, the better... ;) I do not suspect this will turn out to be one of my best builds, but onwards and upwards.

I've been on a very busy vacation this week, man have you guys been busy. I have two windows open to look, and see what I missed, and add comments!

Ace-I really like that blue. The progress is looking good.

Misty-Thanks, I also think decals can really make a model come alive, maybe that's why I've been doing so many race cars lately. That detail inside the wheel wells look awesome!

Eric-Thanks man. The Gremlin looks nice with the decals, The affect on the door is cool! The 440 is looking good, I can't wait to see them both finished.

CODYJ-Thanks, I like the paint scheme too, but the real reason I did this model is because I was a big *** Trickle fan from way back in his short track day,s in WI.

well its finished. its a simple-ish kit but whats there is very nice, its a good looker with just enough detail to make it build-able OOB. well it would have been had the kit been complete. i had to buy in replacement lenses and make all the clear parts from 0.005" clear acetate. the front and rear screens are not really great but about all i could do. ill take some proper pics soon.

Took some better pics. You can see from the pic of the bottom there is no engine, its a curbside model after all, but the detail that is there is nice. you can see i forgot to remove the grey wash from parts of it. its done now but im not going to take more pics. God I love Ferraris.

That looks just fantastic Misty. I think it's as good a result as is possible out of one of those kits. The only one of the high tech one's that I've built it the Triumph TR-2 (have I even shown my Triumph collection ?). I've built a few of the low tech cars as well (TR-3, TR-3A). I can remember fighting with the TR-3 until 4am one night to get it ready for a club display the next day. Argh .

Yours is brilliant, in my opinion. I can't decide which photo I like the most, so can you nominate one for the front page please.

I thought I was pretty well focused on F1 now, but you've totally distracted me with this build. Although they were called Hi-Tech kits, I felt that it made for cheaper design and production for the kit manufacturer, but allowed them to sell at a premium price.

thanks Tony, this one was quite a good fit, apart from when i tried to mate the fully assembled chassis to the body shell. it just wouldnt fit, and needed a bit of dremel work . not what you want to be doing on an essentially finished model. i hope none of the windows come out as there is no way on earth the body is coming off again.

i have not seen any pics of your triumphs, got a  linky?

as for what pic to use , um er god knows, maybe the 4th one down, it shows the lines of the car off nice. or the 2nd for a more conventional angle if you are an old fuddy-duddy :-P

Hey everyone!  It's been a heck of a week around here but I was able to get to the Viper thankfully.  I had managed to take progress pictures all throughout the weekend.  Unfortunately the pictures were deleted (along with quite a few of our son) accidently by my wife. 

Anyway, I was able to get three blitz sessions in over the weekend and am calling this one done.  This one was completely OOB, and challenged myself to not add anything to it.  The kit decals for the racing stripes were horribly translucent.  I ended up spraying the racing stripes Tamiya Gloss White followed by a touch up of the Model Master GTS Pearl Blue. 

You'll have to excuse the pathetic looking bottom of the tires.  There wasn't much that could be done with them other than to replace them, if possible, and I just wasn't going to spend the $ to do it.

This one was definitely a learning experience.  I needed a break from aircraft and armor and wanted to step outside my comfort zone.  It's the first time in a long time that I've built a kit without doing any research.  I can say without a doubt, that won't happen again.

Now that's some mighty sharp work Misty.

I was able to slip in a little time Saturday and get the re-chroming done and sprayed the first clear coat on the 440. It should be hard enough tomorrow to prep it for the next coat.

Also plan to start wiring the engine tomorrow.

The Viper looks sharp. Great work on the stripes. I know they are hard to keep even when masking.

Brian - thats a mean looking motor! what clearcoat did you use and did you have to polish it?

eric - what are you using for the chrome?

Misty - The front page has been updated with your selected photo, heh, can't call me a fuddy duddy. I'll photograph the Triumphs for you.

Brian - that is aharp looking vehicle for a bloke who doesn't often build aautomotives. I hope we can entice you into another :) Really good work BTW. The stripes look really good.

Eric - that's coming together quickly now. It's great to see you back at the bench.
