Ju 87 Stuka GB

I'm new....so there was a few days between me writing that and it being approved.

Both kits are 1/48 and I have some resin goodies to split between both builds to try and improve on the base kits.  I'm going to try making the Verlinden engine upgrade work on the Revell kit....we'll see how successful that is.....but I'm looking forward to it.

The Airfix B kit will be done in Italian markings as an R....not sure about the Revell D markings yet.

Is this the update set you have.

It should work ok, just a case of cutting the kit right. I added an Aires engine to a 72nd G-1 last year, I was really pleased with how it came out.

I will add your builds to the roster now.

I did try a wave pattern scheme on a Ju 88 once, this one looks similar, but I really messed it up. I think I need more practice with the airbrush before I try it again.

That's the Verlinden kit I have....it doesn't look to bad to try on a different kit.  I'm just hoping the basic fuselage shapes aren't too different.  The engine itself looks great...just needs a little wiring and plumbing...

I think a lot of the Verlinden engines need a bit extra. I haven't used a Verlinden aircraft engine, only one of there AFV ones. That didn't fit to well, but then the aircraft ones are not enclosed. Theres not much in the way of plumbing on these and the wiring is hidden by the exhaust mount.

That looks good Bish. That is 72nd scale right???? I have that Verlinden update kit as well but the Aires kit for my 190 worked out so well that I have to give those guys a whirl on my Stuka. The Verlinden update may get used on another one of my 3 Stuka kits though.

That Engine does look good! and especially so at 72nd scale!!  

I sometimes get sticker shock when looking at the Aries stuff, but I think based on what you actually get...it's really not a bad deal at all....

Joe, well of course. It was the Ju 87G-1 I finished at the start of last year. The Aires set also came with the cannon and cockpit.

Those Aires sets are very nice. This is the first time I have used one of their engines, but I have used the cockpits quite a few times, I am a big fan. The only down side is that unlike the newer Eduard PE sets, the Eduard PE is not coloured, but not a big deal.

As well as Aires, I would also recommend CMK sets. I used their engines on my He 111Z last year, same engines as the Stuka. They are excellent sets as well, and unlike the Aires sets, the CMK includes a colour call out. Though I don't know if CMK do much in 48th scale.

I know the Aires are expensive, but those and the CMK are my definite first choice's for resin.

Cool to see that build again Bish. You mentioned Eduard's colored pe. I'm starting to dislike it very much. I like to paint and detail/drybrush my own cockpits, and the color pe is horrible. Way to stark and has a grainy, pixelated texture to it, not to mention the colors are way off on all the sets. You can't bend the seatbelts much or it flakes off. I'm steering away from their cockpit sets now. I much prefer their competitor, Part PE from Poland, but they have a smaller selection. I much prefer the pe that comes in an Aires or CMK set. CMK does make a ton of stuff in 1/48, probably more than Aires. In the States anyway, CMK is way more costly than Aires, so I tend not to use their stuff much at all.

Nathan, you make some very good points there. Certainly the pixelated look and the colour being slightly off, I think their RLM 66 is to light. I still use them 1 because I have them and 2 because I am being lazy. With the Me 109 I did last year, I used the Aires resin but added the Eduard coloured parts I already had. But in a way I wish I hadn't.

I often get the Eduard BIG ED sets which of course come with everything, so I am reluctant to buy resin when I already have the PE. But I have been giving some thought to these coloured sets and I thin I will go more and more to resin, and just buy the other Eduard sets individually.

If nothing else, it will force me to paint and weather the pits, and they will be good practice.

I noticed Eduard's PE color problems as well. They seem to have lots of issues with gray colored parts. Not a single PE set that is supposed to be colored in RLM 66 had that issue and no 2 sets have exactly the same color. Their interior green however looks almost perfectly like Gunze's color. I only really use their interior PE when it's already supplied with the kit (profipacks, royal class). I like adding a lot of AM stuff to 1/32 kits. The first thing I try to get is a resin cockpit (preferably Aires or EagleCast in the case of my big Hasegawa 190). If I can't find a resin set I just buy one of the Eduard PE sets (the texture doesn't matter a whole lot in 1/32 IMO) to dress up the kit parts.

I have Eduard BIGED  PE sets for most of my 32nd kits, i won't be replacing the PE cockpit with resin, apart from the Ju 87G, the interior of most of these kits is very good and i think just needs adding to rather than replacing. But in future i will give serious thought to resin sets instead.

I'll get the Big Ed set for my Stuka as well. I need the exterior PE and masks anyway and the set isn't that much more expensive than buying those two separately. I'll probably use the PE belts for the rear guns included in the Eduard set to replace Aires' version. Thats the only thing Eduard did better than Aires IMO...

I also like to use the Eduard Interior PE for those big HKM bombers. They provide you with everything needeed to really make the interior look special (detailed PE floor panels and sidewall additions)

I just had a closer look at the cockpit set and it looks like the rudder pedals are better than the ones in the resin set as well (simply because Aires' pedals don't work as intended). The PE seat looks really nice as well, provided I can bend it to shape properly and there are some nice PE bits included to dress up the canopy. If I had to decide between one of the sets, I'd go Aires all the way, but I don't have to, so I'll simply use the Aires set with a few selected Eduard bits

The price of a full pe set (not a Bid Ed, thats even more) is usually more than a complete Aires cockpit in 1/48. And half the pe in the set I don't use anyway, so for me resin is usually the way to go. But sometimes I do like the other exterior pe parts, such as radiators, gear doors and gear bay panels, but to get those you have to buy the whole set anyway.

I don't really use a lot of AM sets in my 1/48 builds. It's a bit differnt for 1/32 stuff though. My Aires Stuka cockpit was 35€. The Big-Ed set is 39€, so the difference isn't that big here. I really want to get that exterior PE though and I hate masking canopies without using pre-cut masks, so those are on my list as well. The Big-Ed set is only 8 bucks more and I think those camopy details and better seat/pedals/ammo belts are worth the few additional €.

I switched to HLJ for ordering my 1/32 Hasegawa/Tamiya kits now, so I save a whole lot of money on the kit compared to buying it here in Austria which I canspend on additional AM goodies...

I've seen a few Stuka badges floating around the forums. Surely no one is finished yet, or even started. Hopefully, this isn't only about the badge. It is up to Bish though...

I am ok for people to display the badge as soon as they sign up, of course I hope they remember they still have to complete their build to earn it.

Personally, I never add a badge until I have completed my build, but I think some like to add it before as a means of inspiration to build so they don't have to take it down.

Sounds good Bish. As long as folks do their best to complete and participate. Thats getting tougher as the group builds grow more prolific around here.

I know, and they can be damn hard to resist. But they do seem to be more thought out and timing in relation to other GB's being given some thought.

I've got mine all loaded up to display while I'm building but not until then. If I commit, I'll finish. I know that there are those that keep a badge even though they didn't finish though.

I only pick up a badge when I'm finished with my build and posted the pics in the GB...

I plan on completing my builds, but I wasn't aware of the protocol.  I just saw the "add when you sign up." Didn't mean to be presumptuous.

That's no problem bob, I did say the badge could be hosted. Its nice to see the badges your hosting are all for GB's I am running, I must be doing something right.
