Monogram Mafia III

Well, guys, since I have finally finished my Hasegawa 1/32nd Fw-190D-9, I can now start on my first of two for this Group Build. I'll be starting with the F-100D:

Just bought Len Lundh's F-100D/F Super Sabre Walk Around book to help me along with her. I'm planning on a colorful paint scheme for this one, but that could change a million times before I get to the paint stage.

Got that Hun in my stash. That is one excellent model.

I like the included decals but when I do mine I think I will get the same markings but aftermarket. I had some issues with the kit decals I used on my Monogram  F-101. they were ok but took tons of Solvaset to snuggle them down on some spots.

Not sure yet, Stik. More than likely, I'll use the TAC Fighter Weapons Team markings (kit decals), which was based at George AFB in California back in 1958. But, that could change if I find a good aftermarket set that has lots of color. My dad used to work on these things when he was in the USAF (crew chief) from 1956 - 1964. Wish I had some pictures of his plane, but as far as I know, he never kept any aircraft pictures of his Air Force days. Too late to ask him now.

Yep, I'm looking forward to this one, plasticjunkie. Even though the plane has a 1980 copyright date molded to the bottom of the wing (sanding took care of that), the decals are dated 2001, so maybe they'll be of decent quality. They look very good, all the colors line up, the small stencils are actually readable, and they don't seem as though they'll be translucent. But, with a silver paint job, translucency shouldn't be an issue.

The Warhawk is looking good, Woody! Looking forward to seeing her in full war paint.

Even though it's an older mold, as per reviews  and discussions I have read it's still more accurate than the new Trumpeter. The molded details are fantastic.

Revell 1/48 F4U-4 Complete. I would prefer the underside picture in the 'finished section". The frontal picture does not look so well. Either way do as you wish.

Did a little more work on this little guy. I shaved off the clunky control arms on the ailerons and elevators that will be replaced by thin pe  pieces.

The clunky hand grabs were glued in and when dry were cut off and sanded smooth. They too will be replaced with pe parts.

Broke out my Micromark mini punch set and punched out some instrument faces from my spares.

I did used the kit seat which believe it or not had he correct shape, just sanded it a bit to thin it and painted it dark brown and added the pe belts. The seats also got the tubing detail but it's barely vible when the fuselage halves are joined. I will be closing the fuselage soon but I still need to make the ammo box.

Looking good! I love that IP! I managed to get the Bearcat done but so far no chance for pics yet. Very close to finishing the F-4B so hopefully soon I'll be able to post both as done!

Plasticjunkie--that floor is excellent!  Your grain technique came out beautifully!

Eagle90--I love your choice of that Jeep kit.  I built that as a kid, and I remember comparing my finish to the photos in Shep Paine's "Tips on Building Dioramas" brochure that went with it, and thinking, "Mine doesn't look anything like that..."

Thanks Baron!  Man, those Shep Paine brochures were awesome weren't they?  I wanted my C-47 to look as good as his, but never could get there.  And the polka dots on the B-24!  As a kid it amazed me how he did that!

Eagle, nice to see that classic jeep and gun kit coming along. I cant wait to see that one done. Any plans for particular markings?

Hey Stik!  The kit comes with decals for 3 different markings....MP, Medical, and Utility.  I think I'm going utility since she will be towing the AT gun.  I have  her painted up and am working on some weathering on her now.  that and a little on the AT gun too.  Should be done soon, then it will be time for the Mig!

I wasn't happy with the kit's thick control stick so I scratched out another from sprue and pe which looks more to scale.

The ammo box and oil tank were scratched out of plastic sheet so something is there instead of a hole. I really did not want to spend so much time in this kit but looks like every time I find something else to improve.

Now when the fuselage is closed up that big hole is gone.

Cockpit:washed

Well, I've managed to put in some good time in the Hobby Room this past week and was able to move along quite well.  This week, I'm closer to finishing a few more models; hopefully I'll be able to do that by the end of the week.

I pulled out the Bearcat and started on the landing gear and underwing stores:



Here they are attached to the model. All I have to do now is fix that stupid engine inside the cowl and re-attach the propeller:



After I do that, this bird will be done.

I also shot the top wing to my F4-B4 biplane. Once it's dry I'll be able to clearcoat it, apply the decals and mount this on the struts:



While that was drying, I tested the three different blues I'd bought to try and match the decal. It appears the True Blue is the closest color match:



The True Blue will be the one I use to paint the engine cowl.

I was hoping to be a bit further along on these, but I'm happy with the progress I've made. I hope you all enjoyed the show. Thanks all for looking in, comments are welcome.

Great progress everyone ! Duke I think I will try the true blue on a corsair I am building. The color looks dead on.

Everyone's progress has been good...I've gotten some paint on the MiG-21 but haven't taken pictures. Been trying to find my groove since classes started back up. I'll try to at least get the MiG done before hunting season starts.

Hey duke, I am not surprised the MM true blue is a match. MM actually makes all the colors for the "yellow wings" era of US Navy planes, if I'm not mistaking. The true blue, willow green, lemon yellow, ect. are pretty spot on matches from what I have seen.
