Checkmate

Received my kit today in the mail and will start it after I finish the GB's I'm in right now. Looking forward to this GB as well.

Be advised Checkmate, that the markings on the aircraft pictured on the box, are those from an SBD-3, flown from USS Lexington, at Coral Sea.  Pilot was Ens. John Leppla, and gunner was Arm3, John Liska...and they have quite a story behind them and their exploits after their return from attacking IJN Shokaku on 8 May, 1942...

I would like to particpate in this Group Build.  I have a couple projects, Midway related, that will fit in fine.

First is the Great Wall, TBD-1.  Second will be Lt. Tomanaga's B5N2, "Kate".  I also have an F4F "Wildcat", Mach. Tom Cheek, and an A6M2, markings to be named later...

Thanks for making this one!!

Regards,

Freddie from LI

Don't know how I missed this for so long, tonka!  My apologies!

Great that you made your choice, and the front page is now updated with your Brewster.

Thanks!

Decided to go with a 1/48 Tamiya Brewster F2A-3 from VMF -221

"The squadron, also known as the “Fighting Falcons”, is most notable for its actions on June 4, 1942, during the Battle of Midway, which resulted in 23 members of the squadron, many posthumously, being awarded the Navy Cross for their actions in combat.

VMF-221 had 21 F2A-3's and 7 Grumman F4F-3 Wildcats, all of which were essentially worn out "hand-me-downs" from the Navy."

bobbaily:  Welcome to this GB, too.  Again, very happy to have your participation.

Hunter:  Looks good.  Hasegawa has done some nice artwork on the box.  I remember when all you got was a photo of the finished kit.

Don't worry about hurrying into it.  The start date isn't until June for Midway; May for Coral Sea, to correspond to the 75th anniversaries of the battles.  Plenty of time to plan construction and ogle the parts.

Great...I have to echo something Steve(MC) stated in the Coral Sea GB. One of the great things about the GB's is the research and communication between everyone in the GB.

GMorrison

I just grabbed a Tamiya 1/350 Kagero DD kit. Couldn't wait, started her.

Eighteen of the nineteen in her class were at Midway. Imagine that!

And if you're willing, GM, please post some photos so we can follow along with your progress.

Good that I don't have to make up my mind until June.  I cannot decide to build my Accurate Minitures 1/48 SBD-3,  a 1/700 Akagi, or 1/700 Kaga.  Decisions, decisions.

If I remember correctly, there also has been some writing about Japanese paint not being properly applied to some aircraft - ie. the adherence to metal surfaces, resulting in the 'shabby' look.  More specifically, some did not bother with the primer stage, for whatever reason.

regards,

Jack

Not surprising, since aircraft aluminum is very hard to get a finish to adhere to it unless it is treated with an etchant or primer.

That won't be a problem. AK Interactives "Worn Effects" is very good at creating those results.

You're welcome. Its not a case of a mottled paint scheme as much as a case of a flaking off paint scheme due to operations and environment.

More than likely, that aircraft was onboard Akagi at Midway. It flew at Ceylon less than two months prior, as seen here.

Thanks Stick

Actually I can build my Akagi Kate.

Hase 1/72

I've been looking for a good excuse to build it.

Looking forward to seeing you complete this kit buddy.....I really like the paint scheme.

I don't know anything at all about IJN planes, mc, so it's fine with me.

I would think the IJN had more to worry about between April and June than re-painting planes--but what do I know?

Ok, that explains it.
Well I have a question. I looked at the instructions and the Akagi Kate markings are for Apr 42. I'm assuming they didn't repaint in the two months from Apr to Jun.
Can I still use this as the build or do you want me to change?

No, they were kept in reserve on the morning strike. The confusion in rearming came about while they were still below decks. First it was arm up for a second strike on Midway based upon Tomonaga's request for another strike. Then it was halted upon Scout 4 sighting the US fleet and torpedos are then called for. But after no carrier is seen the land bombs are back on the load out... then a US carrier is sighted, and it's torpedoes again.... in the meantime they are under repeated attacks from Midway and fighters assigned to escort any strike are sent up into the Combat Air Patrol to help repel strikes. The Japanese plan did not allow for the contingency of having to hit Midway again, and US carriers being in the same place at the same time...

Had the Enterprise's dive bombers turned and gone back to the ship like the Hornet's did, Akagi and Kaga would have survived the morning strike. Or if Lt Best's single three plane Division of Bombing 6 had not made their successful strike on Akagi. And three, or two carriers would have launched a co ordinated dive bomber (Hiryu) and torpedo plane (Akagi and Kaga) strike against the US force. The war in the Pacific would have taken a far different turn most likely in that case, and Midway would possibly have been more like Santa Cruz.

Interesting. I would have thought they were part of the attack on the island since Nagumo was indecisive whether to load torpedoes or bombs later.

That's the Pearl harbor Hiryu scheme. I'll have to look when I get home but I think the Akagi scheme is more traditional green....could be wrong though. Either way it's a cool plane IMO.

Yes, Akagi's Kate's were likely in the solid green uppers, just like at Pearl Harbor. Although they played a minimal role at Midway. IIRC, two flew as part of the early morning scout mission on the 4th, and one (perhaps one of those scouts) flew as an orphan with the Hiryu's torpedo strike against Yorktown that afternoon. The rest never left the hangar decks or flight deck of Akagi. Hiryu's Kates saw the most action that day, flying first against Midway in the morning along with Soryu's. The survivors of the morning raid (they were hit hard in the morning by both the Marine fighters of VMF-221 and anti aircraft fire, with only half left operational) later flew their last sortie against the Yorktown that afternoon along with the Akagi "orphan".

CMK-

Put me down for the Trumpeter  1/144 Gato 1941- updated to SS-237 Trigger in June 1942.

It will be a crossover with the Sub War GB if that's ok.
