Aaaa the Musashi, good choice. She was actually the more powerful of the two. She took more hits to take down but that's probably because the USN was hitting her from port and starboard  thus keeping her "level" where as the Yamato was hit all on one side, port I think.

Life is finally calming down abit, maybe, I hope!  I have an empty workbench and surfing YouTube last night, came across a very good documentary on the Musashi.  I had always admired the engineering of the Yamato class and this doucmentary touched me in a way that I wanted to research more the ship and do a build for my collection.  So after the show, and not having anything Japanese in the stash, I got on line and ordered a Tamiya 1/700 Musashi and a detail set.  I also went to Amazon and ordered the "Great War of Archemedes" that I think would keep me inspired for this build.

I completed the gauss cable and finished the seam clean up around the small boat well and flight deck. It looks like the funnels and conning tower are next.

No idea on how to repair the deck but nice progress there Steve! 

After that gluing session , some of the glue got under the tape and melted the dimond pattern deck just fore of the starboard catapult. After trying to come up with ideas the only three I can think of is 1. find a PR dimond pattern deck replacement 2. sand the area and cust continue on or 3. revert to the old armor solution, put a tarp over the catacult or onn the deck to cover the area. Anyway, if I go with the third choice I'll have to change the scene from a battle scene to just her steaming along and the crew doing daily chores.

I completed the 02 deck and flight deck, installed the torpedo launchers prior to installing the decks and filled the gaps. I also replace the doors and ladders in the small boat well using gereric IJN ladders and doors PE sets. Aoshima gives the builder a rubber sprue tree for the gauss cable and you attech them using pieces. I started that process using CA but need to refer to refereces befor proceding.

Since I'm not seeing a lot of participants, I would like to add 3 more entries to my list:

1/350 Tamiya Heavy Cruiser Tone

1/350 Tamiya Heavy Cruiser Mogami 1942. (the non-aircraft carrier Mogami)

and 1/350 Aoshima Heavy Cruiser Myoko. 

I finished my other project, so I will begin work on the Chokai soon. Granted I will start another project, finishing my basement, in a couple months. And this will open up a new area for my builds once complete.

I did order an aftermarket linoleum deck for the kit. I've read over the instructions for it but without actually test-fitting it I'm not totally sure how it will work out. 

And thanks for the tips on painting. I do something much like that on tanks so I should be able to hit the ground running here.

Hopefully I'll be ready to start on her near the end of the year.

Gam, the other nice thing about the lifecolor kit, and I'm sure others as well, is the Linoleum color comes with it.

Painting ships isn't too difficult. Make each sub assembly, black base everything then go over with the base coat grey. The black base establishes the shadows and any areas you want darker than the base color. Lighten the base color some and do it again, rinse and repeat with the last application being small streaks. Do the same with the deck, anti fouling paint and so on. Paint on a scum line along the watterline, touch up the deck fittings and voila, a ship  The IJN didn't use a boot top so don't worry about that

Never used Lifecolor or Vic so it's all new to me. Plus never painted anything like a destroyer so the whole thing is brand spanking new too- I feel like I'm feeling my way around in the dark.

You can also look at Lifecolor. I used their Kure Grey for the Akagi. I really liked them. The only issue I found with them was I couldn't find individual bottles.

Hey Steve or anyone, can anyone tell me the correct shade of grey I need for IJN Shimakaze? Looked her up and she was built at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal so I guess Maizuru grey is right? Guess it's a no-brainer but just wanted to make sure before ordering paint.

I believe you are correct, and I believe the only sister ship of the Takao class, with a significant difference was the Maya. 

I can scan my directions and send you a PDF, may help you a bit. 

I got all the vents, capstans, cable reels and bollards attached. There were a lot. I used the kits cable reels because they were well done. The reel bases are a little thick but the reel details are better than I could achieve with PE reels.

My plan is displaying it as she probably looked during the second naval battle of Guadalcanal on Nov 14th 1942. The Takao, her sister Atago and the battlecruser Kirishima, light crusier Nagara and six DD's battled the Washington and South Carolina and four DD's. The Takao was the only heavy to escape damage. Her guns will be facing port and port torpedo tubes run out.

Next is assembling the torpedo tubes and the 01 deck amidships.

Bruce, I believe this kit is the the same kit as your Chokai since they were sisters. The instructions are diffrent, a little diffrent placement of the vents and diffrent superstructure.

You kidding? I could never get tired of ships. Maybe take a small break between them on occasion.

I actualy can't find the instructions and the only one I can find is on the internet, small, hard to read and all in Japanese. I printed out but still looking for it.

That's awesome Steve! And take your time, I'd think with the Akagi you'd not even want to look at a ship for decade or so! 

Well guys, here's mine. My wife bought it for my birthday back in 2016. It's high time I started on it.

She also bought me the massive White Ensign Models PE set.

I'm hoping to complete it for next years Nats in Omaha, but that's still a year away and I'm not going to knock myself out like I did on the Akagi to finish it. Luckly I won't have 36 planes with their interiors to do and I about half the size.

Looks like a great quality kit there Bruce! I don't know when I'll get to my kit either but I should put up some pictures of my kit and the extras too. 

Those Aoshima kits have some nice detail. That's what my Takao is.

Dunno the exact year but I was in my teens when I first saw Asagumo at San Antonio Hobby Shop in California and thought it was the sexiest ship I'd ever seen.
